So basically I have a 2009 MacBook Pro. I also have two regular large stereo speakers. What would I need to connect those speakers to my laptop? I also want to get into recording, and was looking to get an audio interface. Would an audio interface do the trick? I'd like to kill two birds with one stone if possible. Sorry if this is a confusing question. Thanks for any help.

If you're looking for something really basic, check this out
http://keyboards-midi.musiciansfriend.com/product/Line-6-POD-Studio-KB37-USB-Audio-Interface-with-POD-Farm-Plug-In?sku=250005

It has the hookups you would need to plus in your speakers, and use it as an interface to record. I assume that you're not planning on making Gold records sometime next week, so this should be able to get the ball rolling. I run mine through garage band, It allows me to record songs. That's really all you need, especially on a tight budget. The POD Farm thing sucks, and its not really a high quality piece of gear, but it gets the job done for only $350.

If you have the budget though, look into something better.

Also, what kind of connections do your speakers need?

How do your speakers connect? Do you know if it's XLR, TRS or RS (the last two would both look like guitar cables)? If it's neither, then you might have a little more trouble.

Does each speaker have a separate input or is there only one input and the other speaker connects to the first?

Thanks, I'll look into that Line 6...

All I know is that they're standard stereo speakers. Each one has a black and red input. They use banana plugs.

if you do not know how to connect a laptop to stereo speakers you have no business trying to make music

The kind you stick a bare wire into and tighten/clamp? Or are they like the RCA ones on the back of a TV?

Edit: Or is it like this?

Yeah the kind you stick a bare wire into and clamp. Similar to the picture.

This kind of thing?

Just trying to figure out exactly what you have, since I don't know about adapters or converters for that kind of connection. I'm not sure what you'd have to use. Most audio interfaces for recording won't have that I don't think, but I don't know about adapters.

What's your budget for an interface?

Yeah, I just found an adapter at radio shack. I'll probably just get a receiver and audio interface seperately. Thanks!

HCO if you want to get into recording I found http://tweakheadz.com/ a good resource, even though it is one of the corniest animated-gif-ridden sites I've ever seen.
