View Full Version : Music Talent Hot Beds

All of these of these areas/ cities/ states are considered talent hotbeds for bands in this musical scene, and for good reason.
Where does the best music come from in this scene, and its influences, in your opinion.
(obviously not all "good" music comes only from these areas, these just are a few where a fairly good percentage of bands in the scene come from)

Washington State (Death Cab for Cutie, Minus the Bear, Modest Mouse, Nirvana, Forgive Durden, Gatsbys American Dream, The Fall of Troy, MxPx, The Classic Crime, Pearl Jam )

Long Island/New York City, New York (The Strokes, Brand New, Taking Back Sunday, The Movielife, GlassJAw, Grizzly Bear, As Tall As Lions, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, TV on the Radio, Straylight Run)

Chicago, Illinois (Fall Out Boy, Braid, Alkaline Trio, Smashing Pumpkins, The Academy Is..., The Lawrence Arms, the Hush Sound, the Plain White T's )

New Jersey (Midtown, Thursday, The Dillinger Escape Plan, Lifetime, My Chemical Romance, Senses Fail, the Misfits, Bruce Springstein, Saves the Day, Bouncing Souls, Armor for Sleep)

Los Angeles, California (Weezer, Incubus, Thrice, Say Anything, Something Corporate, Jack's Mannequin, Rage Against the Machine, Bad Religion, Rx Bandits, Sublime, Silversun Pickups)

Flordia (New Found Glory, Copeland, Dashboard Confessional, Yellowcard, Poison the Well, Anberlin, Underoath, Hot Water Music, A Day to Remember, Against Me!, Less Than Jake)

note: some bands from surrounding areas of listed cities included.

Bston should be mentioned: Big D And The Kids Table, The Dear Hunter, The Receiving End Of Sirens, to name a few.

I think Chicago is the biggest "hotbed" right now, but my favorite is definitely Washington State/Seattle.

Florida. They have a big metal scene too.

Edit: Just realized how biased my answer is since I'm from Florida. If I weren't from Florida, my answer would probably stay the same or I would have chosen Chicago.

All of these places have produced some gems. I went with NYC.

Yeah i was going to put Boston on with those bands but i could only think of like 2 more, one being Dropkick Murphy's.
But i think that even with those names i doubt they would get many votes..

New Jersey and Florida were major hotbeds a few years ago, but I think it's spread out right now. There are bands popping up from all over. In the south we have a bunch thriving on tours through NC, SC, VA, and WV.

Gotta be Long Island/NYC -- not to mention the legendary hardcore scene, although we have a great scene here in Massachusetts for heavy music.

i always considered NY/NJ one music scene?

if NY and NJ were combined, i'd vote for that. went with LA because it's closer. not really.

Definitely Washington for me and Seattle specifically. I keep on forgetting that Anberlin's from Florida; I thought they're from Seattle because of their Cities dvd.

Haha yeah, I know. I meant to say The Gaslight Anthem, but must have just had Thrice on the brain (like always). Probably cause they toured together. *sigh* what a n00b.

I didn't read the bands before I voted, though I' m not sure that would change my votes. For the "scene" it's always been about NJ/Long Island, but I think that LA is always going to be where the most musical talent is located.

I just threw them in there because they're relatively mainstream. I could have also mentioned Staind.

I go through location phases. I live in Chicago and the New York metro area, but lately I've been into a lot of west coast music.
LA: Rilo Kiley, Jenny Lewis, Whispertown 2000, Coconut Records, Phantom Planet, The Like, Gold Motel, The Young Veins
Seattle/ Portland/other: Portugal. The Man, Kay Kay and His Weathered Underground, Fleet Foxes, She & Him

Washington. I love the indie.

NY is good for shows though. I've seen quite a number in the past few months. Got DJ Krush coming up next month too.
