Yeah...if I remember I think Chris Mortensen said that Holmgren was more interested in a few other jobs (forget the teams now)...but it'd surprise me if he didn't end up back in Seattle

toby gerhart said today that he's leaning towards seeing what the nfl has in store for him over pursuing a career in the mlb.
ballsy move, but i think it could be the right one. what's everybody's thoughts on him as an nfl rb?
i think he's a can't miss kind of player, honestly.
6-1, 230+. he has the body for it. he's currently taking 21 credit hours at standford and still overperforming on the field, so you know he has the brains for it. he claims he can run a 4.4 at the combine, but even if he can't he should end up in the 4.6/4.7 range. so he has the speed for it.
while carrying the load the past two seasons, he's averaging almost 5.5 yards a carry. and say what you will about the pac 10, that's still somewhat quality competition he's going against week in and week out. his numbers are impressive for a smaller conference, let alone one of the bigger ones.
i'm not saying he's gonna go out and have an adrian peterson type impact, but i definitely think you get a legit hb by drafting this guy. i think he'll be a solid starter or a great piece of a 1/2 combo. he won't contribute much to the passing game, but the potential is huge.
which also brings up the question, when was the last white starting hb in the nfl? there are plenty of white fullbacks, and some get carries from the hb position. but as for a true hb, i can't remember a legitimate white one since merril hoge. and even that's stretching it. i seriously can't think of a sold white halfback in the last couple decades. or at least since riggins.

brian leonard is a white RB(played RB and FB in college @ rutgers) -- and he was picked the second round a few years back. dude has some bad luck though -- he was stuck behind steven jackson there, and now he's stuck behind cedric benson and impressive rookie bernard scott, and now larry johnson. when he does get PT he makes plays though.
I remember when he was at the combine marshall faulk laughed at the thought of leonard being a RB, and kept repeating "he will be a fullback, haha." Mike mayock was in love with leonard.

He would make a great NFL player. The guy is a very complete player. If the Panthers didn't already have 2 great RBs, I'd say I want him. But I would like to see him go to a team that would give him a good opportunity to get some PT.
I would love the Browns to draft Gerhart and have a 1-2 combo of him and James Davis for next year.

All Matt Moore has to do is not turn the ball over and we should be fine against the Bucs. It's getting kind of difficult to stick with a "run first" offense ever since Jordan Gross got injured. Travelle Wharton has done an awful job filling in. Williams and Stewart had no where to run last week and the Jets were dominating us up front. Hope things go better against Tampa this week.

I agree that Gerhart would be a great power part of a power/speed combo backfield. He still needs to improve his catching out of the backfield and run less upright.

yeah, and they might be starting Canty too, against his former team. that can go either way, i suppose. i think Greg Ellis wanted to show the 'Boys what they lost last week the Raiders, and he didn't do jack. Canty seemed to have a similar stance on playing the Cowboys in Week 2 when he wasn't starting. maybe he'll play well, he's good. and i've always liked Osi, too. he's been pretty ineffective this year, but he's still a more proven player than Kiwanuka, i think.
everyone's saying the Giants are dangerous because they're desperate. but i'd say despite their 8-3 record, Dallas is pretty desperate--to show they can actually win in December, since they haven't the past 3 years. i'd like to put my money on Dallas in this one, but against the Giants (or anyone in the East, for that matter), you never really know how effective they'll be.

this year, yeah, it's been pretty bad. i felt last year they were the toughest division in the league, and that they would be again this year. thought the Giants would be tough; nope. knew the Cowboys would be good, despite what everyone was saying. thought the Eagles would take the division; they still might, but they're still not playing. that loss to the Raiders was painful to watch. and last year the Redskins were at least modestly competitive, but Haynesworth was a bust and i really think Campbell is an awful starter most of the time, it's really time for them to get serious about rebuilding.

Part of that is a case of selective editing...ESPN shows
"We won't forget that," said James, a defensive captain who ranted Wednesday about his dislike of the Giants. "It just makes for a more intense game."
His actual quote was: "Eli signed the inside of the locker room, the wall," James said. "He put the score. They ruined our first game. We won't forget that. It just makes for a more intense game."
So...at least James is more mad that they lost the game

writing the score on the locker room wall is pretty classless, i'd say. just signing it is one thing; that's funny. but writing the score out like that is brash and unsportsmanlike, in my book. yeah okay, you won the first game in their stadium. rub it in on their locker room wall, that'll make you look like a class act. it's typically only the trashy, scummy kids/people who write on bathroom walls and stalls in schools and Wal-Mart; Eli's not really any more classy than any of those people, in my book.

I really hate the Giants dude haha I think this year they proved that their really not all their chalked up to be. Everyone talked them up after winning their first five. Of course they're gonna go 5-0 when they play Tampa, KC, Oakland, and Washington. I agree about the Eagles and Cowboys - I'd like to see the Eagles win the division. Desean Jackson is one of my favorite players in the league right now. The 'Skins need to look for a QB to get Moss and Cooley the ball and focus more on developing their run. Portis is a good back, you never hear about him though because he can't do shit on that team.

Jackson's out this week, too. Injuries have destroyed the division this year. Is Westbrook still out? if so, no Jackson or Westbrook's going to hurt them. They could still win the division simply because Dallas has them, New Orleans, and the Chargers after the Giants this week. They'll take Washington again, but the rest of those games could go either way. As long as they win at least 2 and get in on the Wildcard, I'll be happy. And I hate the Eagles, but I'd much rather them win the Division than the Giants. Cowboys can beat the Eagles (again) though, and they could probably beat the Chargers, too, depending on how Romo plays. I just hope they don't get stomped by the Saints. They'll lose, but as long as they keep it close and it doesn't look like the Saints-Giants game, then at least that will be respectable. The 'Skins have a lot to work with. I think Moss is one of the best receivers in the league, and Portis is good too when he's healthy. It comes down to Campbell stepping it up; the defense hasn't been awful, but the offense has just been so unproductive. They need to get someone good in the offseason. I'm not sure who, but just about anyone will be better than Campbell at this point.

I'm sure the Giants would have loved it if (assuming these were home games, which they weren't, but if they had been) someone had written "Saints 48, Giants 27" or, even better, "Eagles 40, Giants 17" on their locker room wall.
Essentially, by definition, what Manning did was a form of vandalism. This isn't okay, is it? http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=4476626 But it's okay if Manning writes that on a wall? Spray paint's a no-go, but permanent marker is so much different?
Would Eli be laughing if someone from the Cardinals wrote "Cardinals 24, Giants 17--hey Eli, thanks for the 3 interceptions!"? Probably not.
Is it funny? To a certain extent. Is it classless and juvenile? Yes, like it or not, it is.
Chad Johnson can't write his name on a football during a game with a permanent marker without getting fined, but it's okay for Manning to write on the wall of a brand new stadium? Hmmm.

hahahaha...that is an awful, awful point on so many levels
1. Chad wasn't fined for signing the ball (this was before the celebration rules)...he was fined for having a sharpie in his sock, which was a violation of the uniform rules for players. So, in that way, your point is completely irrelevant on every level and those two scenarios in no way intermix
2. I really don't see it as classless, especially if a stadium worked comes up and says "sign the wall". Its a little funny, a little out of the ordinary, and in the end, means nothing. Sure, the Cowboys may pretend its bulletin board stuff, but the score of that game motivates them more than him writing on the wall.

That's fine, I'm just saying, they made a really big deal about something stupid like that. Before it was for a "uniform violation", people considered it excessive celebration. Well, I'd say writing on the wall in the locker room would be excessive celebration in its own right.

hey buddy, read my post on the previous page, where i commented on it being funny. hell, read a few posts up where once again, i say that it's funny. if you can handle reading the parts you think are stupid, i think you should be capable of reading it all. it has less to do with the fact that it's Manning and the Cowboys, and more to do with the fact that it's stupid and juvenile.

signing an autograph on the wall of a stadium that the guy in the locker room obviously didn't own. technically, it's Jerry Jones's property. i don't think he'd say "sure Eli, rub it in that you won a game on my new multi-million dollar stadium." that is not the same thing as an autograph.

You said it yourself in your post..."smaller scale"...one was a fan (who had no part in the game, and was outside the stadium where the game occurs) vandalizing a guys private property. In any context of the law...that's a crime. Especially since NFL players have had to defend themsevles at their homes (and have been killed in theirs as well), it took on a different context.
Eli's was the equivalent of a kid writing on a school desk...a crime, sure, but you get detention for it, they don't call in the cops. And in Eli's case, it was like the janitorial staff telling him to write on the desk. So right there, wholly seperate things

you yourself just called it a crime. sure, it's on a smaller scale, like i said from the beginning. my main point originally was that it was classless and juvenile. like i said, funny, but stupid. you just called it "a crime, sure", and so stupid or not, i think that makes the act itself and the person who did it, in turn, stupid.

that is not the same thing as an autograph.
Scenario 1: Staff member from Cowboys stadium comes up to Eli with a marker and a piece of paper, says "Eli, can you sign this for me?"...he signs it
Scenario 2: Staff member comes up to Eli with a marker and says "sign the wall after your win, to commemorate it"...Eli signs it.
Both pretty similar, and if someone from the building is telling you to do it (which is the story as far as I know it), I really don't see anything wrong with it.

so if your maid tells eli manning it's okay to write his name on your kitchen wall in sharpie, that's cool, right? it's your maid's house, not your's, it's obviously her call. it's a guy who works in the locker room; he doesn't own the locker room, it's not really his property, so is it really his place to tell someone else it's okay to write on the wall?

I mean, unless I am missing part of the story...what I see is Eli takes advice from stadium worker, signs wall...probably not something he would have thought to do, but, when suggested to him, he probably thought "yeah, that'd be cool, to remember that whenever I come back here"
I consider Phillip Rivers and Jay Cutler yelling insults back and forth at each other across the field to be more indicative of character (and both are, not coincidentally, known to be dicks) than this little thing
do you really need to get your panties in a bunch because i don't like eli manning? get over yourself, mate.
Well...you were the one who compared it to both TO's excessive celebration and the McKelvin vandalism...both of which were bad analogies and tried to make Eli signing that wall into more than what it is (either by saying it was a "crime" or "excessive celebration").

i still personally believe that technically, it is both a crime (by definition) and excessive celebration in its own right. hundreds of QB's before Eli have won way bigger victories than that and managed not to deface the locker room of the opposing team out of class and maybe even respect for the people who actually own the building. i don't see why Eli thinks he's okay to do that, whether he was prompted by someone else or not, when i haven't ever heard of Brady, Peyton, or Favre writing on an opposing team's locker room walls. it's not really a big deal; this was all blown out of proportion. if you read the top of the thread, i was moving on to discuss other things, and it kept being brought back up. i don't think it's wrong of me to say that Manning write on an opposing team's locker room wall is a classless act. in fact, i remember from when i played football and basketball being specifically instructed during away games not to do anything to deface the opposing team's locker rooms in any way because it's disrespectful. so going off what i've learned as a person and a former athlete, i think it was a classless move on his part.

guccimaneburrrr
12/04/09, 07:34 PM
probably has to do with the price of a baseball and football and the number of balls allotted for each game. a baseball has a life of 6 pitches because pitchers don't like using balls that have scuffs, wear and tear, etc.
mybreakingpoint
12/04/09, 07:35 PM
right, but from what i read, Rhodes was throwing a ball into the stands that he was going to keep anyway. he had 2 INT's on the game, and was going to keep the second, but threw it in the stands, so i don't see why that's a big deal if the ball wasn't going to be re-used anyway.
FondestMemory
12/04/09, 08:15 PM
Its a safety issue. You go into a baseball game knowing that balls entering the crowd is a part of the game. Its not a part of football.
If somebodys not paying attention and gets hit by a football thats thrown into the crowd it could potentially become a big headache. The fines are just to discourage doing that so they can avoid the potential headache.

It's a rule that is set in place. It's just a standard fine. The players know it and $5K is nothing to them. They probably donate it to charity and it is write-off anyway.

Now they're about to hand out the most significant extension of all.
Coach Andy Reid is on the verge of finalizing a long-term contract extension with the Eagles, the team he has coached since 1999, league sources said.
The extension could be announced as early as this week.
Reid's current contract is scheduled to run through the 2010 season, but the new deal will tie Reid to the Eagles for years to come.

Also, he did have an incredible journey to Minnesota, it was called a hall of fame career.
He has led us on a crazy magical start, missed kicks by the Ravens, last second heroics against San Fran, don't nitpick. (if you are a packers fan, which I am just assuming because you are from WI, I could be wrong though) I can pull up all of the 'Brett Favre is washed up, his career is over' articles printed near and or around Green Bay for you, I hope the packers lose every week, very true, if we go 2-14 and beat the packers twice, I had a good year watching my team. And every-time something good happens for the Vikings, the packers find a way to try and tear it down. It's sad really. I know Aaron Rogers is a good player, I could sit here and mention he isn't AS good as favre, and be a complete dick towards the packers and downplay everything the fans say, but in all honesty, I try to keep my opinions un-biased.

yeah, I'm not trying to take anything away from them. Favre got exactly what he wanted by going to the Vikings, and he's been pretty smart with knowing when the talent around him is going to work, so it doesn't really surprise me that they're doing as well as they are. A lot of these people are forgetting there's a few other very very good teams this year, not to mention the cliche of "anything can happen in the playoffs." A little objectivity is all I ask for.

Not much to say about Matt Moore today. He didn't do bad but he wasn't that good, either. He just did enough to not lose the game basically. Will gladly take it over Delhomme turning the ball over, though. Tampa pretty much handed us the win today with the 5 interceptions,3 of which being gifts. Stewart being great on the ground also contributed. Not looking forward to playing the Patriots next week.

Slaton out for the year
Steve Slaton (neck) will be placed on injured reserve, ending his season.
Slaton visited a spine specialist about the numbness in his shoulder on Tuesday and obviously got bad news. With Slaton inactive last week, Ryan Moats rushed 12 times and was targeted three times in the passing game. He'll share snaps with Chris Brown for the rest of the season. Slaton's long-term prognosis is unknown, but the Texans will almost certainly look for another back in the draft or free agency.

Steelers are absolutely pathetic.
It's a sad day for the Steeler Nation. The Steelers have definitely got some soul searching to do after losing to three teams I didn't even think it was possible for them to lose to and ending their 6 year dominance of the Browns.

yeah...about Moss:
We knew he was going to shut it down," Panthers cornerback Chris Gamble told me after the game. "That's what we wanted to do to him. That's what we did. ... He'd just give up a lot ... Slow down, he's not going deep, not trying to run a route. You can tell, his body language."
"You get physical with him, and I don't want to say he quits, but he kind of doesn't run the routes the way they're supposed to be run," safety Chris Harris told me. "If you get a jam on him, he'll just ease up."

teams are obviously double teaming moss and using single coverage on welker, which is why welker can get 10 receptions a game. obviously it's smart since the patriots are either losing or barely winning games. moss isn't getting many targets because he's double covered, not for lack of effort. this is a non-issue made an issue by the panthers secondary and the media. the panthers should be proud they shut down moss with double coverage rather than blaming it on a lack of effort from moss.

They're saying that Marty Hurney and John Fox might actually keep their jobs next year. yeah. it's not likely he'll be a raider next year. his salary next season is 10 mil, and he's due a 5 mil roster bonus in march. even the raiders aren't stupid enough to pay somebody 15 mil to not play.
and expect jim fassel to play a key part in what the raiders do next year. whether it's as coach or adviser, he'll be a key part.

12/16/09, 12:21 PM
not really. generally whiffing on a qb at number one can set a team back about five years, but that's not really the case for the raiders.
they have a defense that has the potential to be solid. they have playmakers at rb, and they have decent young receivers.
although they're bad, they're not as bad from a talent standpoint as you would assume with first look. if you put a capable qb in that offense and get the defense to play how they're capable, you're looking at a respectable team.
if they'd have went into this season with jeff garcia as their starter, we'd be looking at a completely different raiders team right now. not saying they'd make the playoffs or anything, but they could potentially win 6-8 games and be competitive on a week to week basis.
i think they try to sign gradkowski again this offseason, and bring in another veteran and have an open competition.
wrppdarndyrfngr
12/16/09, 12:32 PM

Like Gradkowski...who led them to victories over Pittsburgh and Cincy. Even if he's not the answer next year due to rehab, etc...getting a guy like Garcia or a vet who can not screw up games could definitely have them at least contending.
Imagine them with Crabtree instead of DHB...they'd have two, young, solid WR's (and Davis would have handed Crabtree his huge deal, so he doesn't miss training camp) that could pair with a future QB. They'd actually look good for the next 5 years potentially
is gradkowski even going to ever play again? it's not like it's one leg its both lol
Its a partial tear in one leg (so no surgery maybe) and a tear in the other...either way its the same recovery/rehab time frame. He can probably be ready in time for mini-camps, at the very least he'd be good by training camp. If it was two torn ACL's I'd say he'd be done for a long time

Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver Chris Henry was injured after coming out of the back of a pickup truck during a domestic dispute in north Charlotte. Officers were called out to Oakdale Road near I-485 and Statesville Road just before noon in reference to a person down. When officers arrived, they found Henry in the road, with life-threatening injuries.
Paramedics transported Henry to Carolinas Medical Center, where he is being treated, according to police. Police say Henry was involved in a “domestic situation” with his fiancee at 840 Peachtree Road. His fiancee, who was not named in a press release, got into a pickup truck and drove away from the home. As she was driving, police say, Henry jumped into the bed of the truck.
The domestic dispute continued between the driver of the truck and Henry. At some point, Henry came out of the back of the vehicle.
He was found by police about half a mile from the house in question.
A team spokesman confirmed that the parents of Henry’s fiancee live in Charlotte, though it’s unclear if he was visiting them.
