View Full Version : Albums You Really Wanted to Like But Just Couldn't...

I always have bands and albums that I really try to like and can't. Sometimes it's because the band has done great things in the past, other times its because they seem really nice and/or cool, other times it's just because others with similar musical tastes really love them... but anyway you slice it, I give these albums 10, 20, 30 chances and still they just don't do anything for me.

Examples that come to mind for me:

-The Good the Bad, & the Queen's S/T album
Albarn is a a musical mastermind, Simonon is a great bassist (not to mention, The Clash's bassist), and Danger Mouse is one of my favorite producers... yet I found the album mundane and boring in even its best moments

-Almost everything I've ever heard by Pedro the Lion/David Bazan
I love his lyrics and his honest struggles, I dig his work with Jurado (who also fits this category for me) early on in Coolidge, but the best I can find on any of his albums is one track that I kinda dig

-Metric's Fantasies
I really liked the first single and the acoustic version of the single... so I got the album. Nothing about it either impressed or interested me. "Help, I'm Alive" made me want to like it, but I just couldn't

There are tons more, but they are slipping my mind now... anyway, what are some of the albums that you WANT to like but just can't no matter how hard you try?

Another comes to mind...

-Say Anything's Baseball
I love this band, got way into IARB and never looked back... until one day I did, back in their discorgraphy that is. I downloaded Baseball after seeing how old school fans raved about it. Wow, it's awful. In fact, I can promise that if it was the first thing I heard form them, I may never have got into them... for that I'm thankful that I wasn't one of the peopel who "discovered" them back in their early days, because that album, as mcuh as I want to like it, BLOWS.

I just thought of another... Catch for Us the Foxes by mwY

As a big early fan of the band in their basement show/college all purpose room/church hall days, I love their Kickstart EP and then A->B Life. I tried so hard to like Catch for many reasons... I liked their previous material, loved the guys, ran shows with them, etc. etc... but they lost me quite a bit here, whether it was more me or them. I've never recovered as a fan and still cling to their early material despite owning their catalogue

Yellowcard - Paper Walls and Paramore - brand new eyes.

Both albums no matter how much I attempt to listen to them both just do nothing for me. I honestly can't put my finger on why I dislike most of the songs on the CDs. They are fairly well written, primary energetic, musically interesting, etc. but just don't jive with me for whatever reason.

Saosin's In Search of Solid Ground. I was a big fan of the band's first EP and first full-length, so I had high hopes for ISOSG. But it just ended up sucking chode. Boring music, boring melodies, half-assed lyrics--it was just shitty.

I'm the opposite. I love everything John's ever done. I don't think Battle Studies is as strong as the last album, but there's definitely some stand out tracks on there.

It's so weird with people saying they don't like any Brand New after Deja because I'm the complete opposite. When I first tried to get into Brand New, I listened to Deja on the rec of fans and I just wasn't feeling it at all. But as soon as I listened to some tracks off The Devil & God I was like "now I see what all the fuss is about!". So for me it's more of a case of not really being able to get into any Brand New before The Devil & God. There are a few great songs on Deja, but they're definitely a band who has gotten a heap better since then.

I love the other three albums, especially Daisy, but this just doesn't do anything for me. I've tried listening to it beginning-to-end a few times and I just cannot get into it no matter how badly I want to think it's as great as people say.

See above for my comments on Brand New. I half agree about Thrice, in that I don't consider Beggars to be as compelling as Vheissu or TAI, but I still think it's a fantastic album. To me it's an 8/10 album, rather than a 10/10 album like Vheissu.

since you brought it up. I won 2 tickets to see Sasoin last night in Allentown, PA (thanks Julia Conny!). Cove was horrendous. It was like he didnt even want to be there. He was barely audible and half the time, I swear he wasnt even singing. The only times the crowed was even slightly involved was when they played songs from their first LP and their EPs. Their new album is a piece of garbage, despite having a couple decent songs. I will not wait another 3 years for another In Search of Solid Ground. I will also not go to a concert with the intention of only seeing Saosin. Cove, you embarrassed yourself and your band last night.

I'm glad to get that off my chest.

The most recent album I haven't been able to get into is the new Fall of Troy album, "In The Unlikely Event." Before anyone says anything, I know this band is trash-talked all the time on AP, but I love them. The chaos of their music is what appeals to me. But this new album... it lacks intensity, and good ol' Thom decided he wanted to show off his singing abilities (or lack thereof.) I haven't even been able to finish the album. Sigh.

Besides that, for some reason I never got into "Vheissu" by Thrice very much at first. I really wanted to, but it didn't seem to strike a chord with me. It wasn't until years later and my life circumstances had changed that the sound appealed to me.

It's pretty sad how Beau and Chris are way more consistent than Cove when it comes to live performances. Maybe it's because they're actually singing in their natural range? I adore everything by them, Decomposer is one of my favorite albums ever, but this was probably the worst album to leave us with before they went on an indefinite hiatus. I tried listening to it a trillion times, but I honestly can't say I like a single song on the album. Oh, and 21st Century Breakdown. Its good in its own way, but I don't think it is any comparison to American Idiot or Dookie or any of the old stuff. just...a fail. and Green Day is my fav band (i like new AND old stuff. stupid debate)

Hedley, gosh, once I heard Cha-Ching, my mouth just dropped. I'm not a big Hedley fan, save for a few songs, but Cha-Ching was just terrible. I heard Don't Talk to Strangers the other day. The chorus is catchy, but I hate the rest of the songs. Sad to hear the album is as bad as all of that.

And as for Green Day, Dookie's difficult to top, but I loved 21st Century Breakdown a lot! Except for Know Your Enemy, I've always hated that song..

Amen to this. I remember being so disappointed after not being able to get into it.

Monday in London, whatever album they released after Red Machine.

And after so many chances, im soundly convinced that The Useds first album was just a fluke. Of all the good bands to break up recently, its criminal these guys are still together.

Every time I can't get into an album right away, I give it a few more listens if I feel like it can potentially grow on me, or I'll just leave it alone and come back to it later to see if I feel different about it. I finally caved and listened to Is A Real Boy... after it got a lot of praise on here, and it was just not working for me at all. I just couldn't get on board and could not see the appeal. Not my thing, I guess.

Also, Neon Bible. I love Funeral a lot, but still haven't given Neon Bible much of a chance because it didn't hit me or click with me as much as Funeral did.

Radiohead's OK Computer. I listened to it like 3 times but it just never caught my attention, maybe it's something with the chord progressions? i dont know.

oh wait, that was three years ago. that's now my 2nd favorite album.

When I re-listen to albums I've heard before and written off, it's not usually because I want to like them, but because I want to make sure I still don't like them. It's not an easy rut for an artist to dig himself out of, but that's the truth.

After seeing Animal Collective a few years ago, I tried Strawberry Jam out again, and now I love it. So it can happen.

The Beatles, I try so hard to dig on these guys, but it never seems to work. I spent all yesterday afternoon with the White Album and I just can't do it.

I have the same issue with Thursday's Full Collapse. I love WATT but Full Collapse doesn't seem to connect with me.

I would say to try Abbey Road and if you're not into that album then you'll really know that you don't like them.

Brand New - The Devil and God...

I love the other three albums, especially Daisy, but this just doesn't do anything for me. I've tried listening to it beginning-to-end a few times and I just cannot get into it no matter how badly I want to think it's as great as people say.

as the roots undo / circle takes the square \ after reading several stellar reviews heralding this band as the best thing ever recorded. i was really excited to check them out. i read and liked their lyrics. especially "in the nervous light of sunday". but when i heard them it was the audio equivilent of a seizure to me. i find no value in their music. i appreciate that they make unique, fast songs, but other than that, i couldn't get into them and i really wanted to.

kid a / radiohead \ again, radiohead is built up to be the band of this generation. and while i can appreciate that yorke took a pretty unique and somewhat revolutionary turn with his band, i can't get into any of their new stuff. i guess i'm destined to like "creep" and get shit for it. p.s. "everything in it's right place" genuinely disturbs me. which is kind of cool.

someone stated above that they like every other brand new release except the devil and god are raging inside me and that kind of blew my mind. i personally don't think brand new will ever accomplish what they did with that album again. it was such a progression and with songs like "limousine", so full of emotion. the lyrics are amazing. i'm a fan of daisy, but feel it's downfall is that it's stuck in fifth gear almost through the entire record, whereas the devil and god are raging inside me went through all of them. jesse lacey yelling is incredible, but it loses some of it's impact if he's always yelling.

Actually I came in here to say exactly this. I know Funeral is the better of the two, but it really doesn't do much for me. I wish I liked it as much as everyone else, but when I'm in the mood for Arcade Fire I'd much rather listen to Neon Bible.

Monsters of Folk was a pretty gargantuan letdown, but I have only listened to it one time so far. Still, the final song, "His Master's Voice," is the best on the album, so it's worth listening to all the way through.

For me, John Nolan's Height. I really love about everything he has done up until this last Straylight Run EP and, of all things, his solo album. It just seems so devoid of any effort. Maybe my biggest disappointment ever.

Saosin's In Search of Solid Ground. I was a big fan of the band's first EP and first full-length, so I had high hopes for ISOSG. But it just ended up sucking chode. Boring music, boring melodies, half-assed lyrics--it was just shitty.

i still play it on the mtero to school hoping to really like it and not just think some songs are "alright"

Yes, to a certain extent. I've been finding myself not being able to enjoy a lot of their previous albums recently, but I'm guessing that this is probably just because I don't listen to that type of music as much as I used to. Kind of bums me out a bit.

Eh, all of Brand New. I've listened to it a bunch, never really liked anything they ever put out. I can appreciate the fact they're good musicians though.

new Blue October. I've loved all of their other albums (except maybe their almost acoustic debut, but it's pretty good), but their new album, I swear it sounds like a soundtrack to a kids show. Gone is the emo-pop I've come to love; let's all dance to Barney.

new Burden of a Day... loved Blessed Be Our Ever After, but I just see OneOneThousand as repetitive and boring. Eh, who knows, maybe I'll like it later.

new Emarosa- loved the old, and I love Agraceful too- but cannot get into the Johnny Craig band that used to be Emarosa.

Nice catch. I'll man up and say I'm an idiot for that one. But the dude I quoted is still a bigger fucking idiot. His ability to not type out the smallest of words "too", "are" and "you" really proves it as well.
