it will never happen. hollywood execs already trashed the idea. there is TOO much money in hollywood. albums don't cost hundreds of millions to make. big time blockbusters do.

I think the only way this would happen is if they sold them for like $19.99.

Harr.. rarely would I pay $19.99 for a DVD.

who would want a dvd like this, unlike cds DVDs are watched on HDTVS not computers
Fuck that. I think $9.99 is too much for a low resolution copy of a film with a paltry stereo soundtrack, let alone whatever the film studios are going to want. For another $5-6 or less, I can get the film on DVD in higher resolution, with surround sound, and often times, plenty of bonus features. I can just Netflix/rent anything else.

I never will...especially when I can get them at Blockbuster/Hollywood Video 3/$30, 2/$20, or 3/$25...

Yeah how true. I get most of my DVDs at Target for $4.99-$9.99, and rarely the occasional $14.99 if I really want it. And of course those are higher quality with surround sound and extra features, plus it's easier to watch in most setups. Unless I could stream it (which is probably the case) and for some reason I REALLY wanted to watch a movie RIGHT NOW, I can't see being interested in this service.
The only real advantage, and I must admit it does seem to be a pretty major advantage, is that people with iPod Videos who like to watch movies on them will find this much easier than any other solution I imagine.

It would be much easier, and I could see myself paying $9.99 a few times for a movie. It would be really useful for overseas flights where you don't want to carry about a ton of DVDs and a player, and it's way faster than converting files. Watching videos uses up so much of the battery, though, that it isn't really worth it.

This could be really good for indie flicks that might not have much backing from anyone... also, good way to get some additional exposure. Maybe I am just trying to optimistic.
Also, Jobs is the man.

does anyone really know how much apple would make on each of the files sold? i really do not understand these media corps saying they will lose money by selling electronically. $9.99, no money spent on packaging, shipping, discs, disc pressing... the only thing they are spending money on is servers, which apple would (i think) pick up the tab on anyways. you can just rip you dvds and format them for playing on an ipod anyways, at least this way there would be protection on it in their eyes.

being someone that lives in limited space in nyc, i would use this feature rather than buying physical dvds in order to save space.

Steve Jobs is a hero. He should be named the patron st of the consumer. Fuck the RIAA and fuck the major movie studios, some one needs to look out for the consumer. And its rad that Jobs can look out for his costermers and make millions. Should be a buissness model more companys should follow. Treat you costermers well, make money. So simple.
PS I love my Powerbook.
no money spent on packaging, shipping, discs, disc pressing... .
With the quantity these companies produce/request, those things you mention cost anywhere from pennies to a few dollars. Shit is cheap when you buy it in extreme bulk.

So true.
And yeah, the only cost these people will have is the serverload PLUS the better DRM.
Film studios are stupid, that's why I'll continue ripping DVDs at work with handbrake.
I also love my Macbook Pro :x

Well, Apple currently takes roughly 35% of all music sales from the label.
I'm assuming its a similiar model for their proposed movie service. Thats a fair amount to pay for a distribution channel. I'd guess it takes about $2 - $3 to duplicate, package and ship DVDs too.
