I didn't really like it, honestly. Good acting though.
my movie of the year so far, seriously, a fucking powerhouse performance by Cage and wonderfully written script with pristine direction by Hertzog.

Did this make it to theaters? I remember hearing the studio chopped it for a direct to DVD.

Although production on the film was completed in 2008, the film did not quickly find a distributor for a wide release. The film had its world premiere at the 2009 Venice Film Festival, and was also screened at the 2009 Toronto Film Festival and the 2009 Telluride Film Festival. The film's American release will be distributed by First Look Studios, with a release date of November 20, 2009.
I just downloaded it however

I'm interested but I keep hearing that it's so bad, that's what it actually makes it good. Not sure what to believe. I hear that and then stuff about it being Cage's best role since ... whatever.
I watched the original a month or so ago. I liked it but didn't love it. Wouldn't ever watch it again.

this isn't exactly a remake, it is just being marketed as so to gain buzz or some shit like that:
Although being promoted as a remake of Bad Lieutenant (1992) during its early production, director Werner Herzog claims that this is not a remake. He says he has never seen the original and therefore does not consider this movie a remake. Additionally, producers seemed to have added "Bad Lieutenant" to the title in order to get a better marketing. Whether remake, re-imagining, follow-up or none of the aforementioned, both movies are clearly connected by the basic plot of following a drug addicted, violent cop during his encounters with crime and sex.
The movie is intense, has good acting, but is really fucking weird at alot of parts... i would find it a stretch to say it's really bad though. i understand not enjoying it, but that is different from being bad

Wonder when they'll decide if it's going straight to DVD or not (if they haven't). I'm really interested in it for Cage and Herzog.

It's great. I prefer the first film with the same name, though. Lots of Keitel dong.

It's nowhere near me so I don't know if we'll get it anytime soon.
Saw it, and so glad I did. Nicholas Cage is absolutely awesome in it, as is basically everything else in the movie. Definitely in my top 10 for the year.
This film was bad.....Val Kilmer and Nic Cage were fantastic though.

Cage's performance IS great, and the movie has a few absolutely classic moments. I probably wouldn't call it great either though.
