My boyfriend and I have been really into watching series on DVD. We're almost ready for a new one but don't really have any concrete ideas of where to go. We would like an hour long show, well written, and it doesn't matter if its a comedy or a drama. I would prefer it to have at least 2 seasons on DVD.
Here are a few shows we own and love:
Six Feet Under
Freaks and Geeks
Weeds
Dexter
Veronica Mars
Gangland
Gossip Girl
I would really appreciate any suggestions. Thanks in advance.

Haha I originally added a list of shows I'm not interested in but I thought I would come off as a bit of a prick. The list would have been: The Office, Lost, Heroes, and Its Always Sunny. :-d

Buffy and Angel.
But if you want a well written drama, it really doesn't get any better than Battlestar Galactica.

Hmm both of those sound really good. Remind me to check out Breaking Bad once the second season is released. If you had to choose one or the other, which would you pick?

Oh good one! I saw a few episodes of the first season and really liked it but never got a chance to keep on top of it. Awesome awesome suggestion.

This post cracked me up. We actually have the whole series but I haven't been able to get into it. I've watched the first five or so episodes but it never really grabbed me. My boyfriend gives me shit for not being into it since it has been called one of the best shows of all time, haha.

Season 2's out January 5th and season 3 starts in March, so there's your reminders haha. Start season 1 in a couple weeks, roll right into season 2, and then you guys'll be ready for the season 3 premiere. Both are excellent shows though, I can't choose between the two. It depends what you want I guess. Breaking Bad's an intense drama that's still on the air, while Dead Like Me's a little more comedic and has been off the air for several years. A straight to DVD movie was released for Dead Like Me, which was good too, but not as good as the original series.

um, in the event that you have HBO, the entire first season (only 8 eps) of Bored to Death is probably on there. Probably my favorite new show, and I'm pretty sure it was picked up for a 2nd season

The episodes are only half hour in length and six to a series, but it's the best British comedy show around at the moment.

Nice to see some love for Northern Exposure.
I'd recommend The West Wing, personally it's my favourite TV show ever. Studio 60 On The Sunset Strip also by Aaron Sorkin (West Wing writer) is also worth a watch. It got canned after 1 series, but they wrapped it all up with no annoying loose ends.

Mad Men fulfills each criterion. You should give it a shot, and if nothing else, you'll love the clothes.

As soon as I'm done with The Wire, I am starting Mad Men. It better be good after all the hype it's accrued.

I don't think it's really been hyped at all. Credit has been put where credit is due -- there's by no means an excess of Mad Men praise.
BUT, I'm sure you'll love it anyway.

Also, I've been rewatching the Seinfeld seasons with my brother. Still really damn funny.
Lastly, it's a no-brainer that you gotta get your O.C. on if you dig Gossip Girl.
Over There was great. Only 1 season on FX though, unfortunately. Anybody else watch it?

Here are a few recs for you:
Damages - Awesome legal thriller with Glenn Close and Rose Byrne, easily one of the best shows on TV right now. Season 1 is out now on DVD, S2 comes out January 19 and Season 3 starts January 25.
Mad Men - This is a really great show, it won Best Drama two years in a row at the Emmys. S1 and S2 are out on DVD now. S3 just wrapped about a month ago.
The Riches - This show was really short lived. It's only 2 seasons and ends with a cliffhanger but it's a really great show and FX sucks for not giving this a proper ending (although rumor has it that a movie is in the works). It stars Eddie Izzard and Minnie Driver, who are both excellent in their roles. It's about two con artists and their family who try to live a legit life as The Riches after they accidentally kill them in a car crash.
