View Full Version : Do You Believe in Ghosts?

Seriously. I got into an argument the other night with my friends on whether or not ghosts are real. I just can't by into the whole idea...but then my friends started telling me their ghost experiences. I was definitely in the minority not believing in ghosts.
Do you believe in ghosts?

If you believe in ghosts, does that mean that you believe in the afterlife? Can you believe in ghosts without believing in the afterlife?
As far as I'm concerned demons and ghosts are related, you either believe they exist or you don't. I'm not sure how you could believe in something like ghosts but then discount the possibility of demons...is it because of religion?

I'm not sure how you could believe in something like ghosts but then discount the possibility of demons...is it because of religion?I'm seeing ghosts as being "neutral" if you will. I don't think there are "good" and "bad" creatures from the afterlife, so yes, I more or less discount the idea of demons because I'm pretty much putting everything in the same basket.
By the way, right now it's 17-17, opinions are pretty mixed.

Belief in ghosts is simply illogical because their existence is not scientifically possible.

Well everything in the universe is made up of matter or energy, correct? We know the laws of energy and that it can not behave in such a manner that it would be the "contents" of a ghost. And well, what form of matter could ghosts be made of? None. So if ghosts aren't made of anything, then they can't exist except in the form of a person's own imagination.

Well, ghosts are said to be energy, right? Where does a person's energy go when the die? Energy cannot be destroyed, so ghosts can be explained scientifically.

Well, there's not just free energy floating around in a person's body. There is energy in a person's cells and tissue, and of course in the brain and nervous system. However, energy in tissues and organs comes from calories ingested by the food we eat. When we die, that food is no longer turned into energy and whatever energy is left is consumed by bacteria, or whatever else eats us as we decay. As for the energy in the nervous system, that is produced by the brain and nerve receptors. When we die, they cease to function and thus stop sending out energetic pulses. There is no unaccounted energy that just escapes the body en masse when we die.

I do, mainly because i've had some ghost-like experiences myself. With the whole ghost/demon thing, i think there's different names for different kinds of ghosts. For example, the word "Spirit" is usually associated with good ghosts and "Demon" with evil. Really it's up to anyone to interpret since noone really knows a whole lot about paranormal goings ons.

It wasn't my intention to "own" you or anything else, like the other guy said. I'm not here to convince you, or anyone else, one way or another. I enjoyed you questioning me because that challenged me intellectually and gave me a chance to share insight. You're always free to believe whatever you want, I just like to make sure everyone has the facts before they go make assumptions. If you still want to believe after knowing the facts, then thats your choice and I can't hold that against you.

No. Thermal cameras only pick up solid objects, not the air around them. Ghosts aren't solid objects. They can't pick up "cold spots" like most ghost shows claim either. What kind of experiences have you had in your house?

Science cannot be considered 100% fact. We have all the evidence proving what we know to be fact, but any one thing could set off the laws of science and prove it all wrong in an instant. At any moment, apples could float to the ceiling. Therefore, at any moment ghosts could exist.
However, I don't believe in ghosts.

Ok, I was following you until you said this. Just because science may not be able to completely explain gravity doesn't mean that gravity is just going to switch off... it's there, and it's staying. It's not like someone's going to discover a flaw in our laws of gravity and all the sudden gravity is going to be like "Oh shit, someone knows the truth! I'm outta here!"
But I know what you're trying to say about scientific discoveries changing everything, yet you need to understand that we have a good idea about most of the laws and behavioral patterns of matter and energy by now. A lot of people say "well science has been wrong in the past"... and yes, it has been. I won't even get into the reasons for that, just understand that past mistakes/false assumptions haven't always been the fault of the scientific community. The field of science has expanded and grown exponentially over the last century, far more than any other time in human history. By now, most of the troubles in science stem from inability to prove laws and theories due to the complex mathematical equations and restraints of current technology/energy supplies. However, we have a good idea that our current equations and hypotheses are close enough that it's foolish to deny them.

In short, I wasn't denying you. I was just being a dick. The point about the apples is something one of my professor's often used to say. It was basically that at any moment something unknown could change all of the laws we hold. At the same time, the thought of it just seems ridiculous. No worries though, I understand your point and agree completely.

I just tied it at 58-58. Intense.
My vote is no, but I don't bash those who believe. well, other than the "Ghost Hunter" shows... fucking retarded.

Ugh, though I watch the show, the people who take it seriously really get on my nerves.

Yes, though I've never actually had an experience of my own.

I personally do not believe in ghosts, but I think that it is possible for "ghost-like" things to exist. After all they could be some alien form of technology, maybe like some sort of super advanced cloaking system or something? Maybe they only exist in ones mind, but everything people perceive exists in ones mind, so??

I once stood in a room with steel plate walls, ceiling and floor, and heard clear, distinct footsteps begin less than four feet from where I was sitting. They passed across the floor, out the door, down a short hallway, and then descended a steep staircase. The sound was unmistakeably that of dress leather soles on the metal floor. I was in the room with ten other people at the time, all scattered in different places, and we all heard the steps begin at the same spot and pass the same path. We inspected the room and its surroundings thoroughly afterward, looking at the walls, floors, ceiling and furniture for wires, speakers, and any possible way the noise of those footsteps could have been produced by artificial means. We had a Navy radio expert with more than 20 years experience on hand, and neither he nor anyone else found anything.
I can tell you, it would have taken Industrial Lights and Magic to produce the sound quality of those footsteps, carrying through a room, through a doorway, down a hall, and down a stairway -- and even they could not have done it without showing some wires or speakers on those bare metal, solid steel walls and floors.
I might mention that we were aboard a WWII battleship at the time, and there was no living soul aboard other than the eleven of us., except the caretaker, whom we immediately ascertained was asleep in bed. It was 5 a.m. The ship is a US Naval Museum, the US North Carolina, stationed in Wilmington, NC. I also will mention that, about five minutes after the footsteps descended the staircase, we heard ambient noises from all over the ship, sounding like water in pipes being turned on and off, as thought the crew were coming awake and getting ready for the day.
