So what happens in these threads is that some people come out honestly and admit to liking certain songs by "bad bands" and then the judgmental folks come in here and prey on those that are honest. This has happened in many "guilty pleasure" threads. You don't have to look far to see a thread very similar to this and the aforementioned result.

Yep.

I just think the term "guilty pleasure" to be inherently pretentious because it implies that, although you and others are both liking the same song, because you're doing so begrudgingly, you're somehow superior.

(That explanation comes from Todd, but to be honest, I've been against the term for years, ever since I first got playfully picked on for liking Avril Lavigne. It's funny how often I agree with him on things like this. Sometimes I wish I disagreed more so that it wouldn't look like I'm trying too hard, lol.)

If I had a talent, bad jokes would be it. /sad fact

Yeah, I agree with what you're saying...I mean, that's the general gist of the problem people have with that term. For me, I don't use it, but it's not really a pet peeve. What I was trying to point out though, is that this thread is pretty much saying the same thing, just wording it a different way. "Good songs from BAD bands", see? It's also basically saying, "I enjoy this song, but it's from a sucky band anyway...yeah, I said the band was sucky, therefore no one can put me down for liking it."

I have minor disagreements with him now and then, but it's really intimidating sometimes to try and express my point, because I don't feel anywhere near on par with him rhetorically or intellectually, which is understandable I guess.

Thus why I suggested my alternate thread title. Like "guilty pleasure," the premise of this thread is rather pretentious.

If you ask me, yes, it is merely a buzzword. All concepts that it describes can be explained without using the term, so it's useless in my opinion. Others will strongly disagree, of course. I would rather opt out of providing a definition, but since you're curious, postmodernism can be described as the fluidity of concepts and truth.

Haha, that certainly sounds slightly more describable than "emo" to me. My friend tried to implement the term in this group essay we were doing in Lit, and I asked him, "What do you even mean by that? That word has been beaten to death." And so he asked the group sitting next to us if emo was a genre of music, they all nodded their heads and looked at me quizzically. I still wonder what they meant when they said yes.

Haha, I am never that lucky. My friend stole 20 dollars from me today, then I stole her hat and she chased me into the bathroom. She was banging on the door as I locked it. Scariest thing ever haha.

But seriously, I wish there was a way to convince my mom (and perhaps myself), that philosophy is a viable educational pursuit.

Ha, wow. You live an exciting life. (The $5 part was actually made up. When my one friend tells a completely pointless story, she always ends it with, "Then I found $5.")

I honestly don't see any purpose unless you care enough to stay in school for a long time and/or be a professor. If it's what you're passionate about, go for it, but be careful what you spend your time and money with and how it will impact, uh, the rest of your life. I don't want to be "that guy," since it's perfectly fine to change majors and be unsure (like most of us are), but once you dive in far enough, you'll have to make sure it's worth it. I'm sure you'll sort it all out eventually, though. I bounced from high school math teacher to fine arts to music journalist, and I'm still unsure.

Oh. Crapperdoodles. Well, my first choice for a major still is psychology though...and maybe neuroscience eventually. Maybe I could just take philosophy as a minor or a one-year course and see.

The difference is that emo has a few different definitions, but all of them are precise (i.e. the original genre of music, the fashion trend, etc.). Postmodernism is, strictly speaking, the era after modernism. The definition I provided you is the specific one my professor used, but postmodernism is the idea that what society presently would have you believe as truth can later become irrelevant. For this reason it has a strong link to social constructions (eg. concepts like gender and sexual orientation only exist because they work with our current societal values). An example my professor likes to use is that something you write down today means something to you as you write it, but if you were to pick it up again five years from now it would mean something totally different. It also has a strong link to Marxism, which describes how knowledge is created by the dominating class. The way my professor distinguishes between Marxism and postmodernism (or more accurately, post-modernity) is basically that marxism takes the effects of capitalism into account. It's slippery though, and I often believe we can be more clear and precise by avoiding the word that takes on so many muddled meanings.

Chris likely disagrees with me because he finds the word useful, and that's cool. It doesn't really fit into my method of explaining things, is all.

I'm not saying it's a bad interlude, it's one of the few ones I'll actually take the time to listen to, (I am a big MCR fan lol.) but I think if Desert Song was made slightly different it would fit on there fine. Or if they had written My Way Home Is Through You a little earlier, that'd fit well on there.

How about albums you like from bands that everybody else on this site loves but you dislike minus 1 album!

I couldn't imagine either of them being on it, and I definitely wouldn't want DS changed. Then again, I'm probably one of the only people in the world who think that album is pretty much perfect in every way so like you said, I'm slightly biased.

Haha don't get me wrong I love the album (on my second hard copy of it cause the first one was so worn out.) but I remember when they came over here touring Bullets, and they played a new song that never made it onto an album, I forget what it was called but it was actually good.

If I like their music, I don't know if they're bad or vise versa.

For instance, I love The Cardigan's First Band on the Moon (the album that featured Lovefool). It's fun, catchy and infectious. I could listen to it at any time. The rest of their catalogue isn't enjoyable for me. Does that make them bad? I don't know. I suppose this is rhetorical, but I would label them as bad, per se.

I like This is How You Remind Me by Nickelback. It's a fucking catchy rock song. I can't mine it for anything profound, and the instrumentation has been heard in various permutations since Post-Grunge became the most marketable form of pop music around the mid '90s. However, it does everything a pop rock song should - it's memorable, marketable and appealing. Now, just about everything else from them, I don't care for, but that song is a shining light in '00s Pop Rock. It's the template that all other mainstream rock singles aspire to. It's good. So, are they a bad band? I certainly don't hate Nickelback (why would I?), but I don't enjoy their work except that fantastic little ditty.

I really like the Yeah Yeah Yeah's mega-crossover hit Maps. It's cute. I don't care for the rest of their work. I don't know if I think they're bad.

In actuality, I don't know if I believe any band is "bad."

Ahh, I see, I kind of get it now. The word isn't used in a negative connotation is it? Because a lot of its concepts you just explained make sense to me haha.

Can you elaborate on them being pretentious? I'm really curious. They're hateable for many reasons, but I would never have called them that. For me pretentious involves playing at something artistic without being able to back it up. I've always seen ATL as just brainless party music. But I'm curious about your take.

I really liked "How You Remind Me" back in the days I dug nu-metal, but it started to lose its luster when A. it got massively overplayed and B. they kept releasing "new" singles that were progressively worse iterations of that song with every album.

And I don't dig old Yeah Yeah Yeah's, but I also like Maps and really like It's Blitz. Have you heard it?

cshadows2887
12/08/09, 11:12 PM

I like that (stolen) explanation quite a lot. When Rolling Stone (an admittedly often useless publication) released their "20 Best Guilty Pleasures" list, I had the whole catalogues of, like, half of them. And I was just sitting there thinking "wait, am I supposed to be embarassed that I love ELO? Whoops. Wish someone had told me."

New users always end up doing something that warrants ridicule, so when regulars inevitably make fun of you, just take it in stride. We were all at that stage at one point or another. For some reason, even though it combined two artists for whom I have less than zero respect, the "Turn My Swag On" remix by Soulja Boy and Lil Wayne is a serious jam of mine. ive always been pretty vocal about my distaste for owl city, but fireflies has recently been getting more than a few plays on my ipod. theres just something about that second chorus that is great and catchy! so i thought to myself, if this song is so good i may be unjust in my hatred and i may not have a reason to dislike this guy at all... so i checked out more songs from that record and boy was a i disappointed. i still hate owl city.

I definitely agree with that haha. I don't pretend to like stuff that I don't, or vice versa. My top four bands haven't changed yet since I've been here. I'm not sure if they will, but I am hoping to find another band that is just as good in my eyes.
I think that is really cool.

...I don't get this breast feeding reference...
ha sorry that was a sorry attempt at a joke to lighten a serious side of conversation. Again, thanks for the honesty lol.

How about A.J Popoff's voice???

thats not a song, but god, he had such an AWESOME voice but played in such a shitty band. I mean hellz yeah I listened to Lit in like oh... 6th grade, but if he started a serious non uber-pop band today, I would probably be a fan.

there are some songs by bands like the used and senses fail that i can still get down to out of nostalgia.

Really the only reason I find it so awesome (haha) is the fact that one of my friends and I went to this other bar for karaoke because the dude she liked at the time was working at this bar we normally don't go to and she pre-gamed it a bit before going out because she was so nervous and then she drank more at the bar and she ended up karaoking to that song. And what turned into a 'we're just stoping by the bar for like an hour, hour and a half tops, and only ONE drink" turned into a tall boy for me and a few drinks for her, plus the guy she liked ended up buying us each a tall boy so we had a fun evening lol
