View Full Version : Which should I purchase first?

I've just been accepted into this band and I don't know what I should save up for next.

Professional Amp: kind of self-explanatory. I have an amp that could do the job for a beginning band, but should I save up for one just in case for bigger shows and a higher quality sound?

Acoustic Guitar: We've been doing a lot of acoustic shows lately. I've been borrowing other people's guitars but I would like to have one of my own. (If I do go for the acoustic guitar first, what kind of guitar would you suggest? Preferably a guitar with a decent price.)

New Guitar: I hate having to stop the set to change the tuning of my guitar. Just simply switching guitars would be more convenient for me.

Wireless Guitar System: I'm pretty active on stage and like to be interactive with my band mates and the crowd.

Putting them in order of which you think I should purchase them would be helpful.

Thanks.

I personally think the amp is probably the least important. At smaller venues I think listeners typically understand if the sound is not like 100 percent perfect quality and are just looking for overall sound. I say a new guitar or the wireless guitar system. Whichever will potentially make your set more interesting. and acoustic guitars are always fun to just play around the house. really depends on what you're looking for the most

i say an amp, a bad guitar on a good amp sounds better than a good guitar on a bad amp. but the acoustic is a good idea too.

I used to have a shitty amp AND guitar, and in my situation, I needed a better amp to cut over the drums. Since your amp is in okay shape for gigs, I'd recommend the following:

1.) Acoustic- It's a pain to borrow someone else's. Especially when you go on tour!
2.) Electric- Having a good guitar makes it even more fun to play
3.) Amp- Beef it up
4.) Wireless System- Just learn to deal with the cables until you have everything else

I personally think wireless systems for small local gigs just looks silly.

If it were me, I'd get the most enjoyment out of the acoustic first, but depending on what you have now, an amp may be more important.

i chose acoustic guitar but you can also get a new guitar and just play with the distortion off to save money

I agree completely. Having toured myself, I can tell you that the acoustic was invaluable. Having a second guitar is definitely helpful if you have quite a few songs in drop d, or a full step down, etc... Most venues I played at had a backline, and if it didn't, I would contact other bands playing the bill and see if I could use their amp. I had an amp that worked, but it wasn't top of the line.

Wireless is really not that important. Just learn how to perform around your cables. Eventually you could spring for this, but this is definitely a luxury, not a necessary item.

I think people forgot that electric guitars didn't have any distortion at first yet people had an awesome tone; distortion is very often overused.
