Thoughts on him? A little over the top but nonetheless on the right track.

I know the Marine Corps enough better than to elect a Marine to office.

It means Marines are generally so ignorant (not all of them, but enough) that I would never elect them.

I know nothing about this guy, but keep in mind he is a Lt. Colonel, not an enlisted corporal or something like that...people often confuse and group together all members of the armed forces or specifically marines without factoring in the hierarchy of the rank structure.
I think your statement is a gross generalization.

I've told it to my father's face. And my father admits it as a former Marine recruiter.

I specifically take issue with Marine officers, who for the better part look out for their own interests. And I've seen it happen firsthand.

Didn't say he does, but look up above to what I did say. "Not all of them, but enough." And that's not because they just are. It's because the military actively seeks out the lowest common denominator in society--high school dropouts, college dropouts, etc--the all-volunteer army is statistically composed of those who use the military as a last resort.
Furthermore, like you said, my father doesn't represent every Marine in the country, all 200,000 plus, however my dad will be retiring at 22 years and he has been in a lot of units. I've encountered a lot of officers, in units at Camp Lejuene, NC, trying to protect their own asses from a hazing scandal that they let fester and relieved my father when he questioned an officer due to illegal order. The officer got off. I can remember the RSS Albany chief making my dad work 12-16 days on recruiting duty, restricting time from his family and his newborn daughter and would then lie to my face in saying that the military cares about dependent families. I can recall the conversations of Marines had with my father in my presence complaining similarly. I remember a lot of my dads recruits regretting their decision and wishing they did something else--or wishing they, financially, were able to do something else with their lives.
I'm not saying all officers are terrible and generally self-serving, but enough of them are. I will definitely stick by the military seeking out the lowest common denominator.

You've never called a parent out for doing something stupid? Really?
Also, good job mistaking "you're" for "your".

Yeah. I also respect, love, and appreciate my parents for what they've done for me. I've also told my dad that him being an abusive husband was wrong, and the reason behind my mom's decision to divorce him. See what happened there? I called someone out for something stupid they did, all while maintaining notions of love and respect for them.
And no one's saying that serving one's country is stupid.

I would argue that serving the US in the military is stupid in some ways. Who would want to be associated with the institution?

The issue of entitlement is the crux of the issue. Are we entitled to some form of support by the government? Are situations so bad that without government action some people will remain in a terrible state of life?

Yes, we are. It's a tool of the people.
