I've been feeling really down lately. Last time I felt like this I listened to a ton of The Spill Canvas. Appreciation and the Bomb and The Tide were two major songs that helped me get through the rough time. Any other album suggestions?

Kings of Leon's Only By The Night. And music by Garbage.

I'll think of more album suggestions later when I can scroll through my iPod :-)
Feel better man. We've all been there.

My recommendation is to listen to shit with non-English lyrics because that way you won't be able to tailor them to fit your depressive lifestyle.

Another recommendation- listen to dance music.

How nice of me! I've found you a link (http://primitive-future.blogspot.com/2008/10/virunga-feet-on-fire-1991.html) for the perfect record.

Anything from the Classical Baroque genre.

Don't listen to metal/hardrock/fast electronica whatever you do lol.

Sufjan Stevens always puts me in a good mood, especially some of his poppier stuff.

I'm really on the fence with him when it comes to cheer up music. Like Chicago could either make me feel a lot better, or make me even more depressed.

White Winter Hymnal from Fleet Foxes always makes me feel better though.

Sly and the Family Stone - Everyday People, Thank You, Dance to the Music, I Want to Take You Higher (the end of the woodstock version is my favorite)
Stevie Wonder - I Wish, Sir Duke, For Once in my Life
Michael Jackson - Dont Stop til You Get Enough, P.Y.T.
Prince - 1999, Kiss
Outkast - So Fresh So Clean, The Whole World, Rosa Parks, and most of what they have actually
The Lovin Spoonful - Summer in the City
The Zombies - Tell Her No, Time of the Season, She's Not There
The Trammps - Disco Inferno (I squeal like a little 5 year old every time I hear this on the radio)
The Beach Boys - God Only Knows, Dont Worry Baby, Wouldnt it be Nice
and quite a bit of disco music will help.

Depends if you're looking for something to relate to or something to bring your mood back up. Upbeat music that you like is weird to listen to at first, but it really does help. Some Daft Punk, RX Bandits, Portugal, Beatles.

Important for answering this question: do you want to commiserate with something sad, or compensate with something bright and shiny?

Yeah it sort of does for me as well, but I reckon it doesent do anything to combat depression, somehow I reckon it makes it worse haha.

I listen to depressing music when i'm depsressed.

Pink Floyd - 'The Wall'
Godspeed You! Black Emperor - 'F#A#∞'

Gotta seize the opportunity to have the music be that much more powerful when you can.

well if it's serious depression he needs medical attention, not music
but since we are going for music recs, I'm sticking with that

You wouldn't want that?
Music is best when you can connect with it on a deep level, at least that's how I see it.

i would listen to something with positive, hopeful lyrics... not something that will just pull you down even further.
something like "i survived" by the graduate. or "before you fight this battle" by conditions.
