We just had to move to a new house. I just brought my cat over to the new house with his litter box, food, and a bowl of water. He's behind the washer now and won't get out. I carry him away and put him in front of the food dish, but he sniffs it and runs back behind the washer. Has this happened to your cat? How long do they usually get used to a new environment? Thanks.

My cat scared easily and was really freaked out when we moved her. She eventually got used to it.. we just had to let her adjust on her own terms. Us luring her out of her hiding spot didn't help. She would just run right back to it.

Your cat should be fine in a couple of days. The same thing happened with mine..he stayed in a bathroom for a little while.

I would say just go about your routine in your new house (and your family as well) and then maybe your cat will see that if you guys think it's cool and everything is alright, he will too.
I hope your cat gets better and likes it's new house! I want a cat soo badly, but I have a betta fish and I think the cat would probably eat my fishyboo...and I can't have a cat either because I still live at home in an apartment and we can't have one and my sister is allergic.
But good luck with your cat! =)

Having you tried smoking your cat up? It always calms down my cat.

I adopted my 8 year old cat (now 9 and a half, approximately) in May of last year and sadly have had to move her 4 times. (Apartment in Minneapolis to parents' house in Milwaukee, Milwaukee to apartment in California, California back to parents', parents' to my apartment in the suburbs.) My cat is actually extremely resilient and has calmed down and come out of hiding almost immediately. She walks around whining for a bit, but if I just talk to her and feed her treats she settles down. The move to California was traumatic because she had to fly on a plane and was caged for about 6 hours.. so she hid in my new apartment for about half a day before she came out.
Long story short, your cat will be just fine. Just give him time! :-d

It depends on the cat. It can take a while (especially if they're older) or it could take hardly anytime at all.

Kill that cat. It is the only answer.
You're going to have to find a cat whisperer to talk to it and give it therapy. Until the cat whisperer convinces the cat that it's safe in its new environment, your cat will continue this pattern of behavior.

When we first got my cat, she was exactly like that. She wouldn't eat and she hid for about three days. Just give him time and he'll be good :)
