View Full Version : Is Counting Cards Wrong?

While counting cards is not illegal, casino's have the right to kick you out if you are caught counting cards, because it is a private property. Some people count cards by themselves, or some people even organize groups to count cards as a team. The most popular was probably the incident of the MIT students.
Is counting cards wrong or is it an acceptable strategy for people and teams?
To explain counting cards in short, it is determining the probability of getting certain cards (High point cards vs low point cards). You have a point value and raise or lower it based on the cards on the table. I've seen it done with blackjack, where six decks (or is it eight? I forget) are used. This is also what the MIT students did. The team concept gets really interesting.

That's exactly how I feel. It's just a strategy, so you should be able to do it. But at the same time, it does cost casinos loads of money.

I understand why casinos would kick you out for doing it; when done correctly you can get a shit ton of their money in a seemingly unfair way (i say unfair because not everyone can do it). However, I don't think it's wrong at all. It's just another strategy for you to use to win, and just because it works really well and not many people can do it, that doesn't make it wrong.
The issue with teams is a little sketchier though. I think that's unfair because you're not doing it by yourself, and the others helping you aren't playing the game themselves.

From my understanding (and I could be wrong), teams are used mostly to find hot tables, tell someone when to get out, and keep away attention from the casino. You still have one person coming in on the table, making the bets, and doing the actual counting. I can see where it gets sketchy though.

Ah, okay that's not as bad then. Still sketchy but not really unfair I guess.

It's morally wrong, but if I was able to do it, I probably would. 0:-)

If I had the commitment and patience to learn card-counting (I'm fairly decent with mathematics), I'd be driving to Atlantic City right now and, like someone posted previously, balancing the universe a bit since they still make millions a year off compulsive gamblers, inexperienced gamblers, and so forth. I could pay off all my debts in a day and just move on. I don't need a lot of money or anything.

Actually, you won't just "move on to the next casino." They have biometric scanning software these days that would be able to determine whether or not you've been blacklisted... and usually, those who have gotten caught counting cards have been blacklisted. (I think, I'm not quite 100% sure though, that when you have been blacklisted it means you have been prohibited from entering most major casinos.)

How can one be "caught" counting cards?
And also, no it isn't wrong. It's sad that you can be thrown out of a casino for being smart and actually having a strategy.
