Brand New
June 21 2006
Theatre Of Living Arts, Philadelphia
8:00

Ultra High Frequency - Came on exactly at 8:00 which impressed me. The drummer started screeching into the microphone, and my first thought was "oh, they are going to suck". The drummer and lead singer being shirtless also accompanied this reaction. I was wrong. They had great energy and the drummer was really great. He was so intense and had some great beats. They played until about 8:30 or so, about seven songs, a nice set.

Colour Revolt - Came on around 8:45. They were great. A very different band. The vocals reminded me of Murder By Death mixed with elements of Coldplay (strange combination, but still). The only weird thing with them was the fact that they had two bass players, one of them who looked so scene, or was trying way to hard to be scene. I feel like he didn't belong in the band because he was the only musician without a microphone. They only played 6 songs or so, but they were all longer than the average song. Very cool band.

Brand New - Finally came on around 10. We had pretty good standing positions about 10 feet from the front. The lights dimmed and there was a huge rush of people behind us. We ended up packed like sardines about 7 feet from the stage. Brand New finally appeared and started with "Tautou", which I thought was kind of stupid, but hey, I wasn't going to complain. Here's a setlist that isn't 100% correct (the beginning and end are correct, the middle is jumbled):

tautou
demo 8
guernica
i will play my game beneath the spin light
the boy who blocked his own shot
demo#
the quiet things that no one ever knows
me vs. maradona vs. elvis
okay i believe you but my tommy gun don't
the no seatbelt song
soco amaretto lines (acoustic)
sic transit gloria
the shower scene
seventy times 7
play crack the sky (acoustic)

I was at this show as well, I thought they opened with "Good to know if I ever need attention, all I need to do is die." Perhaps I'm wrong. Regardless, they played a great set. I was the one who started the "Jude Law" chant, and Jesse completely ignored us.

However, the difference between you and I was that I didn't pay attention to the opening bands and really didn't give them a fair chance, mainly because I've been waiting for Brand New to play a show for over a year now.

Also, what was your opinion on the crowd, I thought it sorta sucked because a lot of people were being assholes.

Example: The guy who kept screaming things out (Taking back sunday, I slept with your girlfriend, etc.) , and this bitch who told this guy she was going to throw up on him because he moshed into her, and then proceeded to yell at me, despite the fact I wasn't moshing.

Despite the crowd and the beginning, it was still an amazing show.

Haha, yeah I suck at remembering set lists.

I thought the crowd had great energy, but there were definitely some ass holes like you said. I was standing towards the front (if you're looking at the stage, on the right side). I ended up with some big kid pressed against me and he farted which was disgusting.

What'd you think of Brand New's set. I was pissed at first because they waited to play my favorite songs, but my night was complete when Jesse played Play Crack The Sky, so I didn't really care after that.

ps. I thought the merch was disappointing. I got the dark blue shirt a size too big, and the other ones looked home made.

I thought the set was great, they played just about everything I wanted to hear, except Jude Law and Last Chance to Lose your keys.

I saw the merch and was going to buy the "Fight off your demons" shirt, but I decided against in and instead got a cheesesteak at Jim's when we left. However, I agree that the merch was disappointing.

Also, I don't remember him playing Play Crack the Sky, did he come out to do a second encore? Maybe I was just oblivious to it.

I was standing in about the middle where the mosh pit opened up, then I crowd surfed to the front, but the security guards wouldn't let me stay up there.

Looks like they flipped Jaws Theme Swimming for Guernica and left out demo 6 that night from the first show. I'm hoping they don't stray too far from this set once it comes around to me on July 21st. Actually, I'll be thrilled if I hear Play Crack the Sky and it won't matter what else they play. The rest will just be amazing times.

The last song they played was Play Crack The Sky. And they really didn't have an encore. After one of the songs he left and then came back on with the full band and said "this isn't an encore, more of a continuation, and don't expect an encore".

I was probably standing fairly close to you, I was the tall kid with blonde hair (I know, real descriptive) in a brown Saves The Day shirt if that rings any bells.

I was the short brown haired kid with a indie-rock afro wearing a Jack's Mannequin shirt.

BTW, i see you're looking for tickets to the Jack's Mannequin Aug. 11 show at the tweeter, I might be able to grab a ticket for you if you want it.

OH! DUDE! I saw you in line outside the show, I saw your shirt and was all happy and told my friends haha.

I don't need a ticket to the JM show, my girlfriend surprised me with tickets (really good tickets) to the show, but it's the same day as the Dashboard show, so I think we're gonna see JM in Holmdel NJ then drive down to Camden in time for DC.

Do you have connections at the Tweeter?

dude those are the shittiest pictures ever.

The band themselves has banned any actual camera use at their shows this tour, so camera phones are the only means. oh well.

...Sorry I have a phone from 2004?

I'm getting a new one this summer. Plus, I didn't feel like taking my digital camera and risk getting it stolen.

The venue was also dark, dark enough so that you could barely see Jesse's face.
