Brand New
June 21 2006
Theatre Of Living Arts, Philadelphia
8:00
Ultra High Frequency - Came on exactly at 8:00 which impressed me. The drummer started screeching into the microphone, and my first thought was "oh, they are going to suck". The drummer and lead singer being shirtless also accompanied this reaction. I was wrong. They had great energy and the drummer was really great. He was so intense and had some great beats. They played until about 8:30 or so, about seven songs, a nice set.
Colour Revolt - Came on around 8:45. They were great. A very different band. The vocals reminded me of Murder By Death mixed with elements of Coldplay (strange combination, but still). The only weird thing with them was the fact that they had two bass players, one of them who looked so scene, or was trying way to hard to be scene. I feel like he didn't belong in the band because he was the only musician without a microphone. They only played 6 songs or so, but they were all longer than the average song. Very cool band.
Brand New - Finally came on around 10. We had pretty good standing positions about 10 feet from the front. The lights dimmed and there was a huge rush of people behind us. We ended up packed like sardines about 7 feet from the stage. Brand New finally appeared and started with "Tautou", which I thought was kind of stupid, but hey, I wasn't going to complain. Here's a setlist that isn't 100% correct (the beginning and end are correct, the middle is jumbled):
tautou
demo 8
guernica
i will play my game beneath the spin light
the boy who blocked his own shot
demo#
the quiet things that no one ever knows
me vs. maradona vs. elvis
okay i believe you but my tommy gun don't
the no seatbelt song
soco amaretto lines (acoustic)
sic transit gloria
the shower scene
seventy times 7
play crack the sky (acoustic)
Here are some pictures:
