they're blowing the entire thing out of proportion in this video, in my opinion. They give very little credit to the fact that a 17 year old has the ability to make his or her own decisions. If people do not feel that minors of a certain age have the ability to make their own decisions regarding their sexual behavior then I would assume the Age of Consent laws would be far different, so the real issue here is, do you agree with the age of consent?

That's what I was thinking. It seems like if a 17 or 18 year old guy in high school slept with his teacher everyone would assume "Yeah, he wanted to have sex with his teacher, and he did," instead of "Oh that horrible teacher lady tricked that boy into having sex with her."

I think the age of consent laws are interesting, because there doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason why they chose one of the 3 ages (16,17,18). Like, there's no split on traditional liberal/conservative lines, etc.

I think the alleged problem (that's for you to decide) stems from the fact that a teacher is someone who is in a position of power, and therefore is likely to have more sway over someone, and may be able to co-opt them to do something they weren't exactly prepared for. To be perfectly honest, I know people on both ends of the spectrum--kids that were/are naive enough that could be sucked into the whole flattery, and those that would know exactly what they were getting into. The thing is, being naive towards the flattery isn't necessarily age related. One person I know is still fairly naive, although they get less and less so as experience has shown them the ugly side of people. I don't think you should be able to put someone in prison based off of their thoughts that they wanted to get with someone, and tried flattery to do so--I mean, how many people hook up after the bars are closed because of that? Unless you want to say the use of flattery can never lead to true consensual sex...but that's just stupid.

They use their position to gain these girls trust and then take advantage of their position. Is the girl free to make her own decisions? Yes. The teacher should know better, that's the point. Under no circumstance should a teacher ever have any kind of intimate relationship with a student until after they graduate, which I still think is muddy but not as immoral.

Ahhhhh I'm so with you on this. As a teacher intern I'm pretty freaked out to look at the female students. I worked with Sophomores and Juniors who were mostly 16-17 (legal in CT) and it still just creeped me out when they would look at me with googly eyes.

This stuff is a lot more common than people think, and it's really harmless unless like in this case there is a family who's hurt. I believe fantasies are dual in nature: If there are teachers who fantasize about having sex with students, there are students who fantasize about having sex with teachers, and vice versa. Sooner or later they'll coincide.
