This duo has been around for several years but finally released a double album called Deathconsciousness in 2008. Easily one of the best albums released that year. You can stream the whole thing at http://www.last.fm/music/Have+a+Nice+Life/Deathconsciousness or you can buy it here http://www.enemieslist.net/. They're also supposed to be playing their first show ever somewhere in NY, details to be released by the end of the month.

hard to say, hard to describe their overall sound. i say listen to "bloodhail" "holy fucking shit 40,000" and "i don't love" and after that you should have an idea.

i'd say elements of shoegaze, ambient, drone, industrial are the most prominent throughout

Deathconsciousness is how I heard of them. It took me a long time to enjoy that album, but when it hit, it hit.

similar situation here. i enjoyed it a bit from the start but only through repeated listens did i really grow to love the album.

That's a sign of a good album. You have to work with it, to grow and absorb it. Earthmover, at over ten minutes, is exhausting, but rewarding when it becomes ingrained in you.

indeed, earthmover is absolutely hypnotizing. as a cohesive work this album really succedes at creating a strong atmosphere.

I downloaded the album because of the artwork (I was in European history at the time and we just covered the French Revolution), but honestly I forgot about it and have only listened to it once. Thread reminded me about it, I'll try to revisit it soon.

http://last-train-tocool.blogspot.com/2008/01/have-nice-life-deathconsciousness.html
"If anything, Have a Nice Life can be described as the perfect example of the suffix "post" in regards to all of the music that has come out in the indie circuit since 1980. It is taking all of the concepts that have made underground music what it is and strangling them in such a way that it creates something of a reminder of what progression actually means."

i misread. the blog i got the EP off of does this weird thing with bsides comps were they end up looking like splits. the other thing i have isn't an official release, it's just like demos and bsides that somehow ended up on the internet.
i have the full length. it's okay. it's better than a lot of newer stuff.

Well, Bloodhail is obviously amazing. I also love Holy Fucking Shit: 40,000 and the end of Hunter, but really, the entire thing is great. It's extremely rare for me to fall in love with an album on the first listen.
I know this is going to sound silly, but the mood and atmosphere on Deathconsciousness remind me of TDAG. I'm not suggesting they sound similar haha.
IntoTheSun
05/08/10, 12:11 PM
& isn't there also a pretty hefty booklet that comes along with the album if you order it? What's that about?
Cuddleworthy
05/08/10, 12:42 PM
yeah apparently it's 75+ pages and tries to kind of explain the concept of the album. interesting how you compared the mood and atmosphere to TDAG - i think mood and atmosphere were at the forefront when HANL were creating this record. they wanted to create something cathartic, something people could get lost in. i think the atmosphere/mood here is far more consistent than on TDAG, i mean what is it jesse & co. were trying to get across? in the case of deathconsciousness, it's very clear.

Your recs make my recs sound classy... mainly because my recs are your recs.
Are their non-Deathconsciousness releases (ie, the more recent ones) worth looking into? I hope they've written more material along the lines of "A Quick One Before...". They could easily pen an entire album under that formula and it would garner unanimous acclaim.

voids consists of 2 discs. the first, "powers of ten" consists of early demos of songs on deathconsciousness. the second disc, "what happened next was worse" consists of tracks that didn't make it onto deathconsciousness. i think a couple of these are better than songs that did make it, which is saying a lot.
