View Full Version : Best Friends Far Away

I try to avoid this forum as of late to deal with any of my issues, but I just had a general question for everyone.

I may be moving back home to Washington in the near future (and by near I mean in a week to a week and a half) and my best friend lives in Michigan. Therefore she'll be completely out of reach unless I have the money to buy a plane ticket to see her.

Anyway, I was just wondering if anyone else here has a extremely close best friend that lives really far away and how do you deal with that? I'm just really scared right now because we've lived together since the day we met and we're extremely close. I don't really know what it's like to not have her here so I'm really scared of moving home and missing her so much. So yea, anyone have a similar situation? How do you deal with it?

Luckily, still being in high school, I don't have to deal with that problem yet.

However, I moved a couple years ago and left two of my best friends behind. I still see one of them about monthly (we're only 30 minutes away), and it doesn't really relate, but thats my experience.

My guess would just be to call them and talk to them as much as possible. Remember the good times.

Hope I could help.

I live in Virginia, but one of my best friends lives in Colorado. We talk on the phone pretty much every day, but we only see each other maybe once a year. She's flying out to visit me July 4th, and I couldn't be more excited.

Also, I've got really close friends in Ohio, Michigan, Pennsylvania, New York, Georgia, Hawaii, Delaware, etc. I know it's tough, but you can deal with it. One of the worst things about leaving home and moving away from your parents is that all of your friends will never be in the same place again. I miss so many people, and so many places, but I would rather have these friends and not see them than never have met them at all.

Thank god we have the technology we do today to keep in touch... Free long distance on cell phones, video chats over the internet, and even MySpace are awesome tools to keep in touch with people.

I hope everything works out for you.

i have best friends in my hometown who have been my friends forever, and best friends in my university town who have been my friends for the last year or two. amazingly enough, the university friends are the ones i have a better time with and who i "miss" more when away. i lose most all contact with my friends during the months i'm away with them, aside from a select few who are good at keeping in touch.

I recommend staying in Indiana, because Indiana lacks interesting people.

While that is an extremely valid point....I don't think I could stay in this state for the sake of a bunch of red necks. lol

You have Kurt Vonnegut and Richard Edwards? That's reason enough to stay.

i had a best friend join the navy and i see him once or twice a year if that and when he does come back into town it's really awkward after the typical "how's the navy, blah blah blah" type questions have been asked.

One of my good friends just moved to Pennsylvania. He's only hours away though so once I start driving I'll be able to see him sometimes. He lives pretty far into PA though.

i've had the same best friend since fifth grade. i moved out of the state a week after high school graduation. since then, we've still remained close. he joined the air force and has done stints in korea, texas, kansas and now north dakota. we're still close as ever though.

through myspace, or e-mail, and regular phone calls i talk to him more than i do some of my great friends who live around here.

yeah, it'll suck not being able to see that person whenever. but you both still have to live your lives. just never lose contact and your paths will cross soon enough.

and on a side note, get out of indiana. it eats souls. i grew up there and bolted the first chance i got. have never once regretted it.

Why would you want to leave the Fort?

Even though it is not as extreme as you my best friend is about a 3 hour drive away. We have been very close since high school and I miss him a lot. We keep in touch as much as possible with phone calls and texts and we get to see eachother a few times during the year. I know its way different than what you are dealing with but its the only thing I can relate. He is the only one I can trust with a lot of stuff and its so hard to not be able to have him around to talk to in person. He also works full time plus goes to school so even if I wanted to make the drive to see him it would basically be impossible to get some free time from him.
Good luck with moving back home if that happens.
