SYG hasn't been around long enough to really compare, but they have yet to put out anything that I would consider eh.

Grind. The name really speaks for itself. Upon saying that word that first thing that comes to my mind is a headfuck of noise that my brain really cant keep up with. Now I appreciate some good grind every now and then, but I find most of the currently popular bands in the genre hard to distinguish. Daughters on the other hand, have put out a forward thinking grind record that really out its own niche in a genre lacking any sort of real identity.

Hell Songs is not like any grind record you have heard. It’s as simple as that. Sure, you have some insanely fast guitar playing, wild riffs, spastic time changes and the like, but what you get is an almost calming version of grind. Sure the music is wild but what you get from the vocals is a comfort not usually found in grind. Gone are the shrieks found on the bands last “full length” (I use the term loosely as it was 11 minutes long!) Canada Songs, in favor of an almost narrative/talking style of vocals. This adds a depth to these songs that really puts Daughters ahead of the current trend-grind being put out.

Daughters have been able to add catchiness to these songs without having to sacrifice the speed in their playing. Musically many people will find it similar to Canada Songs, but they’ll also notice they have more parts stuck in their head, and they’ll realize each time through they are catching something new. This is the kind of depth desperately needed in the grind genre. Where I might listen to Canada Songs as a fun, 11 minute distraction from an otherwise boring day, I find myself spinning Hell Songs as often as I can because I just can’t get the songs out of my head.

This album is going to be hit or miss for fans of grind and particularly for fans of older Daughters material. While some, like me, will find this to be a huge step forward in the grind genre, others will say otherwise. There is not 1 scream on this entire album. So if you’re looking for something shrieky and just all around noisy look elsewhere. The vocal range also doesn’t move much further then an almost mono-tone type pitch. In my opinion the vocals fit this style perfectly but like I said, others simply won’t like the sound.

Daughters have put out a forward thinking grind record that the genre will recognize and emulate for years to come. Hell Songs is a step above the current grind albums that are being put out and should not be missed by fans of original, genre pushing music. Clocking in at just 23 minutes you still get that quick kick to the mouth type feel, only on Hell Songs there is a whole lot of depth to go along with it.
