There have been threads about her, but nothing significant, so I think it's worth making a true "official thread" for her. Breakaway is definitely one of my favorite pop albums of the decade, and this year's All I Ever Wanted was also very solid. Her voice is just wonderful.

All I Ever Wanted? It wasn't as good as Breakaway, but I thought it was enjoyable enough and certainly a step up from My December. I really like "My Life Would Suck Without You" and "Long Shot."

Yeah, except "Whyyawannabringmedown" is a lot more fun and has much more emotion to it. "You Better Pray" sounds ridiculously dull and half-hearted, to put it nicely, but I can really imagine Kelly having a heck of a good time singing that song.

I listened to My December for basically the first time since shortly after buying it, and I couldn't get more than about halfway through. The only standout songs are "Never Again," "Sober," and "Irvine." The only significant shortcoming I can think of for that album is the lack of memorable choruses, but for this kind of pop music, that's crucial.

It's not a capella, it's merely the studio version with the instrumentals taken out. I think the one for "Because of You" sounds a lot better:

I'd argue that My December as a cohesive whole is underrated.I'll agree with this.
It's sad that this whole album was defined by the failure of that single.
I actually won tickets to see her live a couple of years back. I saw her at Jones Beach Theatre which is an outdoor theatre on the water. She was outstanding.
I like the song, but it's one of the few from the album I can enjoy.
Last I checked I liked 'Sober', 'Irvine' and 'Can I have a Kiss?'
I need to get back to some Kelly soon, she has been lost among some of the other things I have been addicted to (Goldfrapp).

I agree with all of those besides "Can I Have a Kiss," but that's just because I don't know that song; I always lose interest before it. I only know "Irvine" because I've gone out of my way to listen to it because of a recommendation. Since I agree with the others, though, I expect to agree with that one.
I think the primary thing holding My December back is the lack of memorable choruses. The rest seems to have potential, but that lack causes the songs to run together and be unmemorable and boring. Would you agree with this assessment?
Crap, still need to check out Goldfrapp. It's been longer now, so you probably can give a better answer than before: What one album of hers would, in your opinion, be the best to start with?

I completely agree. The reason I single out 'Can I Have a Kiss' is because I DO like the hook on that one. It is one that stuck with me. It could stand to be polished up a bit for sure. If they had given it the production that her professional records get, I think it would have been great. Oh, and you know, I do have a fourth song on my iTunes from that record, 'Maybe'. Unfortunately this record isn't really a 'grower', the rest of the material just isn't that good.

At this point, I would say just go in order. I had thoughts at first about them being better or worse but I listened the heck out of the first three records and they are like my childrens right now. Can't play favorites. Each one is pretty significantly different than the others, so you may or may not like all three. Felt Mountain is very surreal, sounds kinda like Portishead at times, mostly slow songs, probably their 'best'. Black Cherry is a mix of the ballad style from the first with the glam/dance/sexyness songs that they made a lot of on BC and Supernature. Supernature is their most immediate and poppy record. It's a little more inconsistent than the first two, but I still really like it. From what I have heard, their fourth album Seventh Tree is a huge departure from all three of the other records, and it just depends on who you are as to how much of it you'll probably like. Their new record is out next year and it's gonna be dancy, so I hope it's good :3
Maybe some track picks will help you out:
Felt Mountain: Lovely Head, Paper Bag, Utopia, Horse Tears
Black Cherry: Crystalline Green, Tiptoe, Strict Machine
Supernature: Oooh La La, Ride a White Horse, Koko, Number One

A pop album shouldn't be a "grower."
Maybe that's an ignorant thing to say. Pop music can certainly have depth that takes some time to take in. However, if there isn't some level of immediate satisfaction, for a genre I understand to be based pretty strongly in accessibility, there's probably something wrong.

It's not as good as Breakaway, but it was nonetheless a nice return to form after the fairly weak My December. The highlights are definitely worth the price of admission.

I honestly enjoyed My December quite a bit. And it's my favorite behind Breakaway. Again, I'd probably give the silver to All I Ever Wanted were it not for all the missteps. I agree that there's some awesome cuts on there, but it just isn't working for me as a cohesive whole, you know?

I gave My December another shot maybe two months ago, and it was still dreadfully boring. Very few memorable hooks, and that's horrible to say about a Kelly album. I think I made it just over halfway through before changing it.

I like "Never Again" and like two other songs, I think, but I can't even remember what those songs were right now. One was a ballad, and the other, I think, was at the end of the album. I literally couldn't remember half the songs I heard minutes after I was done.

I'm not sure she has any serious competition for that title
Seriously. As Simon Cowell said, "Kelly didn't find American Idol. We found her." Or something to that effect.

Too bad they can't seem to 'find' anyone else D:
Maybe instead of cramming all their top finishers into styles that are already wearing out their welcome, they should try to find something interesting for them to do.

"IT'S NOT OVER...!!"
Oh, Daughtry. I actually don't have a problem with him, but he's about as uninteresting as radio rock can get. He's basically at Nickelback level: If I hear a song, I'm not mad, but I'd never listen on my own accord. Enough letting him pollute this thread, though, lol.
I went to FYE today to see if they had a used copy of Thankful. No such luck. Breakaway used was $10, though, and My December was $5. So, they value the latter about half as much as the former. How generous...

I think that they have no interest in that as long as Idol maintains the most watched show on TV with what's currently working for them.

Yeah, that's completely true. That last statement was more 'what I want' rather than what they 'should' do.

DLMSY is BTHE part II...love it anyways.
So this thread kind of died after AIEW but I'm reviving it with some great performances she's done this year.
Such solid vocal skill.

Also, My December is an amazing album which comes in second after, the pop behemoth, Breakaway.

Only just got around to listening to All I Ever Wanted. God her voice is great. Never a wrong mood for Kelly.

Wouldn't use those words to describe either album, but yeah, My December is second to Breakaway.

Agree with "stevenisfading", Kelly's cover of Seven Nation Army is kickass!
I'm pretty much in Kelly withdrawal, I mean, it's great to listen to her older stuff... I just want some new material.
"Don't You Wanna Stay" with Jason Aldean is okay, but I want to hear some newwwww stuff.

Why not? Breakaway had the career/decade-defining song Since U Been Gone and her radio airplay during that CD release was ridiculous.

I love Kelly Clarkson, so much. Really want some new material though.

I can think of a P.O.D. song that many would claim "defined" their career. Would that make their album a nu-metal/rap-rock behemoth?

I'm with him on this one. That record is one of the best girly radio-pop/rock has to offer.

There is something freakishly transcendent about "Breakaway." Can't. stop. listening. It's the perfect pop song.

Written by Avril, oddly enough.

Been spinning Breakaway and All I Ever Wanted a lot lately. Is My December worth the listen?

No less than All I Ever Wanted (or at least, Thankful).

My December is pretty lame. If you do give it a shot, pretend it's not a Kelly Clarkson album. I mean, it's weak even as a standalone album, but when you realize that album followed Breakaway, it becomes pretty inexcusable. There are a couple nice tracks, but I don't think they're worth the digging for. If anything, just hit up the opener and closer.

Used to be obsessed with her like 5 years ago! Massive fan of Breakaway. My December and All I Ever Wanted are okay, few catchy tracks here and there!
I seriously cannot wait to listen to some new material of hers!
