anyone else like post rock? (stuff like explosions in the sky, mogwai, godspeed! you black emperor).

I wasn't sure where to make a thread about it since it doesn't really fit in any of the forums (maybe alternative), but more people need to listen to it.

Absolutely love it. Check out 65 Days Of Static, Yndi Halda, Mono and From Monument To Masses. And Alternative will be a good place to put a thread like that, it would get more replies.

xglassjawx
06/26/06, 09:40 AM
Haha, although I and everyone else uses it, Post-Rock is apretty loose term, I mean 65 Days Of Static and Mono both get called Post Rock but to be honest, they couldn't sound anymore different.

Maybe She Will are really good as well, a lot like 65 Days Of Static, if you like the sample-y electronica with occasional heavy guitars, you'll like them.

GY!BE is one of my faves in this category (emusic has some of their cd's for those who dont want to spend $15 and up to find these cds) but all there stuff is the best. the climatic epic sound is awesome. it gets pretty errie too, turn it on before you go to bed and fall asleep to it, it'll be the soundtrack to your nightmares, haha

Post rock is something thats fairly new to me honestly, I mean I've been listening to Explosions, Mogwai, etc. for a while but never knew the term for the genre. Until I hired someone to write a blog for my network, and he told me about the genre.

do make say think, a silver mt. zion, the books, 65 days of static, explosions in the sky (favorite), godspeed you black emperor, set fire to flames, mogwai, the arcade fire, the album leaf, octopus project, molasses, hrsta, sigur ros, landing, why?, okkervil river, the list goes on and on and on. i love all of it. i'm not sure all of those would be considered post-rock, as i actually don't believe in the genre called post-rock. but i really love bands like the ones i listed and i have tons more if anyone wants some or has suggestions for other good ones.

Yeah, such a great band. They're re-releasing the EP on a bigger label in November. I think they were unsigned when they first released it. Speaking of Post-Rock, I'm listening to "Unreleased/Unreleasable Volume 2" by 65 Days Of Static, and it's just a load of mash-ups of Chart songs haha.

Neil On Impression is pretty accesable post rock with pianos and violins, the pianos and violins make it sound a bit more distinctive and help it move away from the typical post rock sound. They're OK, nothing amazing or memorable though.

So...I'm trying to start a post-rock band. Does anyone know any theory that's incorporated with the genre?

I'm kind of new to playing guitar (in every other band i've been the singer or played keys), so while I can play stuff, I'm not too up on theory. I am in the middle of music theory classes, so there's a good chance I'll figure it out on my own.

I'm not a huge fan.

Btw, You Are There is stunning, may just creep into my #1 of 2006 spot. I can't wait for the new vinyl. I don't actually have a record player, but I'm sure I'll be able to find mp3s. I think it's out in November, it's only two tracks but knowing Mono it'll be pretty long anyway.

EDIT: Just downloaded a sample of it, it doesn't sound quite as neo-classical, and the guitars are a bit different but they still sound pretty much the same, this is still pretty stunning though.
