I’ve heard the story about Robbie Robertson (from The Band) saving Rick James during a bar fight, and later introducing him to Neil Young. Rick and Neil supposedly wrote some songs together, but I’ve never read about nor heard any of that material. Does anyone know the details behind the work they did together?

Supposedly they formed a band called The Mynah Birds in the sixties and recorded an album for Motown, but the recordings were shelved when James was arrested for going AWOL from the Navy. Neil and Bruce Palmer left the band and formed Buffalo Springfield, and as far as I know none of the material from those sessions has surfaced.

I would love to hear that Mynah Birds album...I can't believe Motown never tried to release it once both artists established solo careers!

I'm sure they'd be heartbroken to hear that.

I think could be brilliant...both are amazing songwriters and musicians. I just can't begin to imagine what the music would sound like...

I just uncovered some more info on Rick’s music with Neil Young. Supposedly they were emulating the British R&B that was popular at the time. That definitely fits with Rick’s M.O., but I have a hard time imagining how Neil fit into that mix. I would still love to hear what that sounded like.
