Isle of View - Gentle Firefly Radio
Release Date: June 28, 2005
Record Label: Undecided Records

Baltimore, Maryland's Isle of View thrives on the pop punk that Drive-Thru Records pioneered, which is now becoming the standard for the genre. Unfortunately, many bands just try to sound like those Drive-Thru "invasion" bands rather than striving for their own unique sound. Isle of View lies somewhere in the middle. Not quite generic, featuring elements that set them apart from their contemporaries, their 11-song full-length Gentle Firefly Radio, will appeal to fans of Allister (“He Who Laughs Last”), Lucky Boys Confusion (“Blue Ribbon Shoes”), and Southcott (“One Too Many”). Weak mixing and production on the album drags down the score excessively. The instruments need to be tightened and thickened, and the gang vocals lose effectiveness when they are easily disregarded in the background sludge. Gentle Firefly Radio is a catchy summer album that leaves the listener desiring just a little bit more when the acoustic guitar on the last song fades out for the last time. Before long, Isle of View should make waves in the genre provided that they further develop their intended sound. They are well on their way with swooping guitar riffs and bridges sprinkled throughout the songs that put some of the hackneyed pop punk bands to shame. Fenix TX? Not yet. We’ll talk in a couple of years.

Good review and comparisons. This cd was pretty damn catchy the first couple times through, but died a quick death soon after.

Yeah, I thought it was pretty butt.

Why bother to review a mediocre album unless it's coming out of a major label and is more of a warning to save your money?

I've never heard of this group and I don't think I will ever again.

I say review anything and everything, but that's just my opinion. I like hearing about new music regardless if they don't like it, they put the bands name out there and people can check them out and voice their own views.

I agree. Something that's amazing and we'd probably never hear of - LET US KNOW. Something that sucks that we'll never her about - DON'T.

I've never heard of this group and I don't think I will ever again.Because bands and labels take the time and money to send us CDs, and they want our assessment of them. A review, even a short one, is the least we can do.

holy. it's pretty rare to see a review under 7-8 on this site. i like the mini-review idea for cds like this.

Reviews should give both sides...otherwise what is their point...I mean, why bother actually reading the review if you know it's going to get an 8+, they might as well just put their name and the "reccomends buying...(enter cd name)"

Agreed, especially smaller and lesser known bands, because at least I know I don't really need (or care) about their back story to the CD if I've never heard about them.

Yeah, I'm gonna have to agree with you there.

Any and all reviews, big bands or small bands, I read'em all, because 3 times out of 5 I disagree with the review, so I take the time to check out the band and form my own outlook of them.

This is exactly how I feel. A review is just an opinion, and not everybody has the same taste in music. So, the review is just a potential starting place for an exploration into the music. A reviewer writes a review. People who have heard of the band can respond with their own opinions. This gives other viewers who have not heard of the band an opportunity to get both sides. If their interest is piqued, these viewers can then go to the band's website/myspace/purevolume/whatever and look into them more. This site is all about music and connecting people who enjoy music with bands that perform music. One of the old stickers for this site used to say something like, "Absolutepunk.net - Your new favorite band might be just a click away." I still feel that way about this site even though the new stickers say something different. But then, that is just my opinion.
