why in god's name would you want them to shorten their songs when they obviously have the talent and ideas to carry them for up to and including 29 minutes.
Go see one of their shows, and you'll see why it would be crazy for them to shorten their songs.

Becasue a 6-8 min long mars volta song is a lot better than the 14-16 mins ones they are starting to play. I usally end up falling asleep 3 mins of the same few strings being played doesnt impress me. I love mars volta but I hated the last cd the first cd was 100x times better.

all of you fucking hipsters need to shut the fuck up. i love it when they act like its the better cd just because it has super long songs.....im sorry but 5mins of silence is not art, its fucking stupid.
Frances is weaker on every level. Frances is a fucking borefest.....and no i dont have ADD. i love tons of instrumetnal bands (ie EITS, Godspeed, Set Fire To Flames, Saxon Shore) and TMV is by far the fucking worst when they pull out the 10min instrumental parts, and the silence. fucking worthless.

i have ADD and i don't think the songs on frances were too long. they aren't boring, they are epic, you ignorant asswipe. it takes just as much talent to put feeling into a seemingly chaotic series of atmospheric noises as it does to right a 3 minute song. take your head out of your ass and try to think outside the box. EVERY sound on that album, every note, every drum beat, every synthesized wavelength, was created to tell a story. a fractured story, but a story nonetheless. don't hate because you cant squeeze your brain around a particular idea, maybe you aren't listening with the right ears because obviously, many people heard something in that album that you didn't.

call me a hipster, elitist, whatever... but cassandra gemini is the second best song the mars volta has recorded... with take the veil cerpin taxt being their best song to date... there is no silence in the song.. and even the quieter parts are epic... its all opinion, but to say any mars volta song over 8 minutes sucks means there probably is a pretty good chance you do have ADD... so maybe you should shut the fuck up

You guys are hilarious. I like The Mars Volta, but three out of eight tracks clocking in at over 10 minutes is just excessive.

why is it excessive, they arent trying to write 3 minute radio friendly tracks, they are writing what they want.. they have only had three tracks(not including intros) that are under 6 minutes on their two previous full-length albums, so why should they start writing short, catchy, radio-friendly tracks on their third full-length

Its actually much closer to 77 minutes. Im surprised they just didnt go for gold and fill the damn thing at 80 minutes. Im sure they could throw in 3 minutes of noise just for kicks right?
anyways... that link is saying that the promo went out on june 16th? uh.. theres no way. it'd be floating around somewhere by now. or at least someone would be saying "oh I've heard it and.. blah blah blah" either way all I can think about now is how much I want this to grace my ears. legally or not.
I hope it sounds more like Deloused, Frances did nothing for me, it was just noise.
i don't see why everyone dislikes the long songs. i think it's great when a song can be very peaceful at one point, and downright chaotic at another. they wouldn't be as powerful only clocking in around maybe four minutes.
or maybe you just need to listen to them high or something?

How is he an ignorant asswipe, he was just stating his own opinion. I happen to agree partially with what he's saying, I don't like the long, quiet stretches of weird noises that are all over FTM, but that's just my opinion. Does that make me an ignorant asswipe too? People here really need to calm down and understand that people are entitled to their opinions. Every time someone says what they think, people immediately tear them apart and then they start fighting over grammar. Ridiculous.
Edit: My bad, didn't see the part where he said "all you hipsters need to shut the fuck up." But still, the last half of what I said is still true.

why is every good band turning into poppy sell outs
i'll never listen to any new music ever again, i'll just have to listen to what i have
You're kidding me, right? Godspeed, funnily enough, can stake a far better claim to being a fucking hipster band whose songs go absolutely nowhere. Take a look at good instrumental bands like Explosions, Do Make, Mono, etc. which actually play "songs" within a drawn out, instrumental format. Godspeed does nothing at all but play random parts which kind of go off into nothing.
The only "silence" within Frances is between songs, and I have no idea why you people are so bothered by this considering the ratio of music to such silence on the album. Cygnus is basically a nine minute song with two of typewriter sounds; Widow is three with three of keyboard noises; (but oh my god there's a skip button if you don't like the keyboards!), L'Via has a 45 second intro which is a very cool beat, they jam out on the end for a while, and theres a couple minutes of silence at the very end (oh no!). There is a long bird noise intro for Miranda, but it's still basically just a four minute song with a long buildup, which if you actually listen to is very cool with the trumpets. However, once Cassandra starts there is no "silence," just a half hour song.
At least TMV's more instrumental parts actually go somewhere, build rather than play random parts, and generally have some sort of flow within the song.

undermanagement has provided the most valid argument out of anyone.
I'm taking the middle ground on this. I think De-loused was a much more solid album, but Frances had some parts that were just unreal. I'm kind of looking forward to this album because the songs are long but not THAT long. Many of my favorite songs are 5-8 minutes and theres a bunch of these on the album.
I think its pretty amazing how the news about the album came out of nowhere like 2 weeks ago with less than 2 months before its release.

who is saying frances is better because of the fact it has longer songs. Frances is a much better album in general, in my opinion, because of every reason but the song lenths. i totally agree with undermanagment. godspeed is some low end prog rock. I dont know how you can say its a borefest with songs like gemini, lvia, famine, cygnus.

thats why they make a skip button on cd players.
personally, with a few exceptions, i dont really like deloused that much. Other than eritarka, ineratic esp, cicatriz esp, televators and take the veil (which is still odd at times) i dont listen to much else of the cd.
FTM however, i can listen to every song straight through, even if they are 20 minutes long. I love the cricket noises at the begining of miranda, it adds a totally amazing ambiance to the song that i dont think would have been achieved other wise. Plus its about a ghost for christ sake, so i believe the intro is not only amazing, but needed. And once you cross that barrier, then the rest of the cd is fuckin rockin without a down beat section at all. Overall, musically, a much much much better cd IMO. TMV will go down in history not for deloused but for FTM i guarentee it
