What's your favorite classical or operatic composition? My knowledge is extremely limited but mine is by far "Nessun Dorma." Especially Pavorotti's version.

Runners up:
Gershwin Rhapsody in Blue
Stravinsky Firebird Suite
Copeland Hoedown
Holst The Planets
DeBussy Clair de lune

Probably Russian Christmas Music, mostly for the last section in D major.

Un'Aria Ancora

Probably Rhapsody In Blue...
I wish I had been listening to classical for longer than I have.

I had to learn Selve amiche ombrose piante, an Italian aria in an opera by Antonio Caldara, for my voice lesson class. It's been stuck in my head ever since.

Oh, and Rite of Spring.

^ That is a challenging listen right there.

Handel - Lascia Ch’io Pianga (From Rinaldo)
Rossini - The Barber Of Seville - Overture
Bizet - Les Toreadors (from Carmen)
Rimsky-Korsakov - Alborado (from Capriccio Espagnol)

And even though it's the most copied and overused chord progression of all time I still have a soft spot for Pachelbel's Canon In D.

I've always been a fan of Berlioz's Symphonie Fantastique

Just wondering, are most people in this thread are music majors (like I am), or just casual listeners?

Can't read music worth a lick. Though I do play in bands, not that that counts for anything. But definitely a casual listener.

What, exactly, qualifies as classical music? I was going to say Steve Reich's Music For 18 Musicians, but I don't know if that qualifies or not.

It's a nebulous term, but I'd say anything orchestral that lacks any pop song structure.

And from your avatar, I was expecting you to dig Beethoven's 9th.

As much as I hate hearing about him all the damn time at school, I really do love his stuff. The same goes for Mozart's Requiem.

Ticheli is a god at what he does.

Liszt's Totentanz, Scriabin's piano sonatas (esp #5), Rachmaninoff's piano concertos (1-3 and then Rhapsody on a theme of Paganini), Beethoven's Piano sonata 17, Poulenc's concerto for two pianos...

Classical music is the best. Really depends on my mood as to which I like best, though.

Daemon Irrepit Callidus by György Orban. That is seriously the most fun song ever to sing. It's SATB & a capella. So wonderful.

Handel's "The King Shall Rejoice" Coronation Anthems are pretty awesome, too.
