View Full Version : Tony Reports In: Warped Tour '06 (Miami)

I went to Warped Tour in Miami, Florida yesterday. I worked the Virgin Records booth for about four hours passing out download cards and Over It samplers, but I found plenty of time to catch a bunch of bands. Here's what I thought of those I saw (most of them are main stage because the Virgin tent was in close proximity).
Silverstein
Cursed today to open Warped Tour on the main stage, Victory Records’ Silverstein made the best of it. Selling 179,000 copies of their sophomore Victory release, Discovering the Waterfront, got them on the main stage this year. They have always been a just above-average screamo band to me that might be a better bet if they dropped the screaming altogether. They put on a tight live show, but the cookie-cutter sound is a bit irritating.Neutral
Saves the Day (Acoustic)
We went by the Vagrant stage on the way in and caught part of Saves the Day’s acoustic set. I’ve always been a huge fan of the band, and hoped their latest album, Sound the Alarm would break them into heavy sales and mainstream rotation. It doesn’t look like it will, but frontman Chris Conley is looking quite stylish with his pink hair. Saves the Day puts on a good acoustic show that makes me wish I could have seen their full-band set. In other news, Chris Conley gained a ton of points in my respect book; he was seen walking around the label tents and stopping to listen to check out CDs at smaller tents.Thumbs Up
Senses Fail
I used to have a lot of distaste for Senses Fail before I saw them live with Saves the Day. Then I realized I was by no means off base. Warped Tour this year just solidified my aversion to Senses Fail; Buddy Nielsen cannot hit a note to save his life, and it’s terribly obvious on the main stage. The screamo sound is great until your singer sounds like a dying cat before he even starts screaming; then it’s obvious your band is a joke in a live setting—regardless of the fact you’ve sold three hundred thousand copies. Buddy, please get a real job.Thumbs Down
Against Me!
Signing to Sire Records might just be the big break that Against Me! needs. Searching For A Former Clarity made a dent on the charts, and the band puts on a great live show. Even with the notably haphazard Warped Tour sound system, the band completely killed it, producing a sound that didn’t sound far off from the CD at all. I admit, I smiled and sang along at the top of my lungs to “Sink, Florida, Sink.” While I’d love to see these guys playing smaller venues, take what you can get and check ‘em out.Thumbs Up
Anti-Flag
Admittedly, I’m not really a fan of Anti-Flag. The highlight of their set was to see how many times they’d use the word “fuck.” We stopped somewhere between twenty and thirty. I’d like to hear them some more on CD and then hear them live again to really judge them though.Neutral
Helmet
I miss listening to Helmet. I didn’t realize how much until I heard them at Warped. They have a new album coming out this year on Warcon Records, and I’m now looking forward to that new CD. If any Warped bands want to learn how to pull off the post-hardcore shtick, they need to throw some Helmet on the CD player or just catch them live.Thumbs Up
Armor For Sleep
What To Do When You Are Dead was a solid concept album, although the lasting power was minimal. Regardless, kids have gone nuts for this band; hopefully they’ll never see Armor For Sleep live because their image of the band will shatter into a few thousand pieces. Allegations of autotune overuse on CDs fly around, but after Armor’s Warped performance, I’m convinced they autotuned the hell out of the vocals on the album. Ben Jorgensen was almost as off-key as Buddy Nielsen, which I thought was near impossible. Whenever he had to hold a note, he just could not keep the right pitch, and half of the time it sounded like he was wailing his way through the songs. Simply put, make sure you use Armor’s set time to grab a hot dog or take a leak.Thumbs Down
Motion City Soundtrack
Motion City Soundtrack is one of the bands most deserving of their main stage slot. They work their asses off, tour the country, and still find time to put on a solid set, no matter where they play. Last year, they played the Hurley stage and put on the best show I saw all day, MxPx notwithstanding. This year on the main stage, they were actually a little less awesome, but if you’re a fan, you’ll dig it.Thumbs Up
Joan Jett and the Blackhearts
One of the best performances of the day was the 46-year old rock ‘n roll queen, Joan Jett. As a rule, Kevin Lyman usually tries to include a flashback artist (last year was Billy Idol), and Ms. Jett was picked this year. She has a new album coming out (Sinner), and she played both new and old songs during her set. She’s still a punch in the babymaker for Warped Tour, and I think everyone who attends this year needs to see how it should be done.Thumbs Up
Underoath
I might be lynched for saying this, but I’ve never really gotten into Underoath. Their genre doesn’t really fit my style of preferred music, but on recommendation from Brian Robillard, I checked them out (from backstage, no less). Even if you don’t like Underoath, you’re missing arguably the most energy-packed performance of the day by skipping Underoath. Aaron Gillespie might just be the best drummer in music today, and he put every bit of himself into the show. Don’t walk—run to their set and be prepared to have your face torn to shreds by the sonic attack that is…Underoath.Thumbs Up
Over It
I’ve loved the Over It guys since interviewing them a year ago on their tour with the All-American Rejects. They’re playing on the Volcom stage in their fifth year on Warped Tour, and I wouldn’t be surprised to see them rocking the main stage next year, especially with the strong Virgin Records debut they’re releasing on August 29th, titled Step Outside Yourself. They’re debuting three new songs in their set, and are covering Face To Face’s “Disconnected” as their set closer. Adding Ryan Ogren (ex-Don’t Look Down) is a huge boost for the band’s sound, and I must say I’m impressed with Peter Munters’ progression as a singer. Over It is a band to watch in the future. (Make sure you pick up the sampler from the Virgin Records booth; it’s three new songs—two electric, one acoustic. Say hi to Craig from Virgin too. He’s a cool dude.)Thumbs Up
That's it for this year. I've got interviews with Over It (Nick) and Aiden (Jake D.) that will be posted in the next couple of days. Myself and a buddy of mine are looking to work a week or two on Warped Tour next year (and hopefully somewhere where I could do a tour journal for AP.net)--anyone like the idea?
Special thanks to Vin and Brian (The Smashup), Craig and Don (Virgin Records), Nick (Over It), Heather (Victory Records), Mitch, Jake D., Jake W., Angel, Nick, Wil, Troy, Fruity (Aiden and crew) June's merch girl, the sound guy and drum tech for Aiden, and everybody who made Warped Tour fun yesterday. Double-special thanks to Aiden and their entire crew for letting us hang with you guys during the rainstorm. If I missed anyone, I probably love you too.
The Aiden interview should be interesting.
Right?

that doesnt mean you have to be a douche and pull people down. everyone is there to have a good time, if you can't stand the pit, then dont stand in the front. go stand off to the side where you wont have to deal with crowd surfers and you'll probably have a better view.

no. one rule with crowd surfers: bring them down. then we'll see how much they crowdsurf.
All I know is that when I saw Armor they sounded almost perfect live and had tons of energy. Either they were having an off day or they've really declined in these last couple months. Aaron is an amazing drummer, I wouldn't say best in music today but I might be inclined to put him top ten (at least in this scene).

Exactly I can't stand the douches.
Crowd Surfing is stupid..you can have fun and enjoy the show without crowd surfing...i didnt pay like $30 to see a show and have to look behind me every 5 seconds so i dont get kicked in the head.
you can push and shove all you want...at least i can still see the stage that way.

lets think about this. throwing a crowd surfer onto the ground may just hurt the crowdsurfer. letting the crowd surfer continue with his crowdsurfing can potentially end in someone being paralyed. so many people get kicked in the head and taken down by crowdsurfers (remember the thrice show where the girl broke her neck?). i had a molar kicked out by some dumbass crowdsurfing about 5 years ago, since then i have made it a point to throw every crowd surfer straight to the ground. no one deserves to get kicked in the back of the head at a show.

I think what the kid was trying to say is that they weren't "real" screamo..
I am just guessing though that he is one of those kids that only listens to "real" music. even though I hate silverstein , I hate people who have to make a big deal about their "real" music and how its floating in their minds all the time.

Yeah, people need to just realize that 99.999999% of bands labeled "emo" or "screamo" aren't "technically" in that genre but people just find it easier to throw them in "with the rest of them". I feel like Chris Farley (R.I.P.).

I mean no one can have a bad day. Or all bands on a major act like that. Or no bands on an indie act like that. You know what is going on in Ben's world and yeah, it's being on Sire records that caused it. Good job, detective. Christ. What attitude.

It wasn't that hot because it was overcast all day, and I spent a lot of time at the Virgin tent so the only free stuff I got was from them. But it gave me a new respect for the people who sit there passing free stuff out all day and how they deal with the people who just take it for the sake of taking it. As I said in the review, the guys from the label are so nice, and I (along with my buddy who went with me) was glad to be able to help Craig out.

I am the best drummer in music today. Actually the guy from protest the hero wails on the drums. or the dude in Avenged Sevenfold...but his drumming is sometimes too robotic...that's why I like protest the hero...the drumming is all over the place...almost impossible to play along to without knowing the songs by heart...Uh I am pretty sure Bonham from Led Zeppelin put a lot into his live show...he could wail too.

I went to yesterdays Warped tour in Orlando, FL. I saw Less Than Jake for my very first time, they were awesome, i was right in front of the stage. And during there set, Fat Mike came on stage and gave JR a haircut, he left it as a mullet for a while and then he cut the rest off.
all you guys who complain about crowd surfers are pussies. its been going on at shows since they started..if you dont like it then dont stand in the pit.
exactly. THIS GUY knows what i'm talking about.

Simply put, make sure you use Armor’s set time to grab a hot dog or take a leak.Thumbs Down
Special thanks to Vin and Brian (The Smashup), Craig and Don (Virgin Records), Nick (Over It), Heather (Victory Records), Mitch, Jake D., Jake W., Angel, Nick, Wil, Troy, Fruity (Aiden and crew) June's merch girl, the sound guy and drum tech for Aiden, and everybody who made Warped Tour fun yesterday. Double-special thanks to Aiden and their entire crew for letting us hang with you guys during the rainstorm. If I missed anyone, I probably love you too.
what? thumbs down? i saw them last year but was too close to the speakers to hear the vocals but that didnt really matter to me. i thought the energy they put off to the crowd was amazing and i had never heard a single note of Armor for sleep before then. seeing them live last year made me pick up the cd. and i dont go see a band live hoping the vocals are the exact same as the cd i go to see a band give off energy.

alright, alright, he's pretty good. he really shows it off on Define The Great Line though, cause the shit he does on They're Only Chasing Safety is pretty basic stuff.

i hate to pile on the Senses Fail sucks bandwagon, but Buddy cant' sing and needs to stop smoking. my question is whether heath is still playing for them, because i haven't heard anything from midtown in a long time

Haven't read all the replies but I'm just gonna try to annoy all the people who are moaning about crowdsurfers. I do it, and will continue to do it, you're not gonna stop me. I'm also putting on a bit of weight now, oops. I tie my shoelaces up tight and don't keep my wallet and phone on me or they are with someone else. Have fun when I crash onto you or kick you in the head. Hey atleast I try to give people warning. But I feel so much better doing it now because of people like the people in this thread who just moan and bitch and aim to hurt crowdsurfers. Happy crowdsurfing!

Aaron Gillespie might just be the best drummer in music today, and he put every bit of himself into the show.
wow, such a bold statement. i agree with how he puts his all into his live show, but best drummer? two words: steve kleisath. be ashamed if you do not know him.
