Asking Alexandria - Stand Up and Scream
Record Label: Sumerian Records
Release Date: September 15, 2009
The post-hardcore scene is always trying to stand out from the crowd in some form, but as I was on YouTube one evening, I ran into this English band called Asking Alexandria, who formed in 2003, broke up in 2007, and then got back together. At first, I particularly didn't like them, but this is a don't-judge-a-book-by-the-cover band. This is a great band, especially for a debut album (as it has been claimed by many).
The first track, "Alerion" is a good opener, and it opens with a "phone call", I guess. I don't know how to describe it, but it's different. Vocalist Danny Worsnop yells, "Fuck this!" and then comes deep growls and a harsh guitar playing, along with double-bass drumming. Some of the tracks on the album, however, aren't much different, but at least they're not bad. "Nobody Don't Dance No More" is one of my favorites, with the lyrics saying, "I'm alive. I can't believe what I've become, I won't stop breathing. Your world is falling at your feet, I won't stop breathing." They're some good lyrics, but that's about as good as they get. The lyrics in this band are so cheesy, it's unbelievable. A perfect example would be the last track, "When Everyday's The Weekend". There's an awesome breakdown in the middle of the song, but that's all the song's got. A song about partying and "Getting kicked out the fucking door" doesn't comply to me as good lyrics. My second favorite song is "Hey There Mr. Brooks", which features Shawn Milke from Alesana, who contributes to the chorus, singing his heart out with the lyrics, "I'll be there in the morning / with a smile on my face, / I'll be there in the morning / to start it all again." My favorite track, however, is "I Used to Have a Best Friend (But then He Gave Me an STD)". A great clean chorus, witty breakdowns, and good drumming compile all into one, memorable song.
As a vocalist, Worsnop definitely shines when he screams, but not so much when singing. His clean vocals can use some work, but they're not bad. What is unique in this band is that they implement electronica beats in some of their songs, like the non-lyrical "Hiatus", and it's perfect. The guitars are perfect at their playing, the drumming is great, the bass is on notch, and Worsnop screams and sings on key, without a mishap. The production is super clear, and all of the instruments come to life together with the vocals. Seriously, Sumerian Records can definitely make a CD sound good. But then again, I can never complain again after I heard Brokencyde's EP (don't worry, it was only two songs), which was so muffled it was unreal. I am also head over heels in love with the guitar. Every song has a unique type of playing (except the breakdowns), and it makes me want to listen to that part over and over again. This album isn't without faults, however. As mentioned before, the lyrics are just unbelievable in some songs, especially the end song, which Worsnop screams around the end, with "I like to party / you like to party / we like to party / all fucking year / all fucking year". That is bad, simply bad. However, not all the songs are that bad lyrically, but that one and some others are. Another fault is that the clean vocals can use a little work or tuning. My point is the screamed vocals are amazing, and the clean aren't. But of course, like any band, they improve for the better, or the worse.
Honestly, I don't know why this band gets constantly compared to Attack Attack. Those guys are nowhere near as good as these guys are. I don't think they sound alike at all. Anyway, Asking Alexandria might have broken up back in 2007, but they are back. Although this a great debut album, they have to work on the lyrics next time around, because they are unimpressive, and working on the clean vocals can help out as well, but enough with my griping. If you love post-hardcore in general, this is a must buy. To the rest, it may not be a good place to start.
Attack Attack; post-hardcore; Bring Me the Horizon, growling people

EDIT on 11/18/10: This band degrades women to the point of disgust, therefore I have no more respect for Asking Alexandria or their music. That is all.

Rhythm guitarist Ben Bruce was in a band called Asking Alexandria while he lived in Dubai before moving back to England, where he formed another band of the same name, which is this one. I thought I'd clear that up for you.
I find this album to be entirely forgettable, minus "The Final Episode" and "Hey There, Mr. Brooks". However, I will agree that vocalist Danny Worsnop is a notable screamer, and is or will be known for his fondness and ability of growling. But that's pretty much it for me. I'd go into much more detail, but I only gave the whole record one listen. Nothing really stuck with me rather than the strangely distinctive "Mr. Brooks" and "The Final Episode".
I find it odd that you don't think Asking Alexandria and Attack Attack! sound alike. If you filtered out Worsnop and former AA! vocalist Austin Carlile from the music of both respective bands, I believe you'd find similarities all the way down to the electronic sequences, although Asking Alexandria would likely be considered as more brutal.

I agreed with most of the comments here, I have the album. I found it overall to be catchy at least. I figured it was like every metalcore band with a different screamer (Whose scream, I will admit, I enjoyed) until the synth kicked in and I realized that this was another cookie-cutter scene metalcore band. I got to the fifth song and decided to turn it off.
If I say I truly enjoyed any track, it was A Candlelit Dinner with Inamorta. The synth/breakdown was top-notch (even though I just disgraced it).
Oh yeah, the lyrics are horrendous.

Genericore at it's finest, they remind of that other rip off band miss may I that just sounds like everyone else but I'll give it to the band it was extremely impressive of them to think of the marketing strategy they did (no offense to any of us Americans) but it's still sub par to a day to remembers plan to take over the world

although i consider this the catchiest/best done breakdowncore in awhile. this review is lacking.
I like a reasonable amount of these "scene screamo" or whatever you want to call them-style bands. This, however, is horrible. Horrible, horrible, horrible. For me, it takes the worst points of the genre and amalgamates them into one big behemoth of crap.
This band is basically American, they live there and don't live here. They play off the 'English band', Americans eat it up.

my definition of a breakdown is having a specific part of the song dedicated to a separate beat. in that case, the entire album is a breakdown, which means there are no breakdowns, imo.

This album, in my opinion, is a pretty good debut album.
They've got some pretty cool breakdowns and the vocals (clean and screaming) are pretty solid, and the drummer is fast. Guitar players however, I feel, are just playing generic stuff. Don't get me wrong, I think they are good. But nothing is really original. They use riffs that sound alot like other bands.
This band has a lot of potential. They just need to lose the "Attack Attack!" keyboard parts. Makes this cd sound too much like "Someday Came Suddently".
Just my opinion.

If you actually cross check your sources you will find that the band who made The Irony of Your Perfection is not the same band as the band who made this album. There is one member in this band who was in the other band, but they have stated through their MySpace - in a post made a few months ago - and in interviews - lastest about two months old - that they are not the same band who made The Irony of Your Perfection, and that it is a common confusion.

i'm really getting sick of people saying that so-and-so band has generic breakdowns.
what the fuck do you people expect? it's a breakdown, a simplified part of the song that is designed to simply sound cool and give you something to "dance" to. emphasis on "simple".
does anyone have any idea on how hard it would be to make a completely new breakdown that fits a song so nicely? they re-use breakdowns because they need something to fit the song. it just so happens that someone created it first.
by the way, this band is not that bad at all. probably one of the best in the emo post-hardcore genre. people that are not fans of this genre need to stop saying shit about them. if you don't like the genre, then of course you're not going to like the band, but i dont want to hear you constantly complaining that they're not good because you dont even like the style.

I saw this band last night and I gotta say I'm not at all impressed. The guy's vocals were passable but every single aspect of their sound has just been done to death, and better. Idk what the hell you are talking about or what band you saw live, but I just saw Asking Alexandria last night and it was amazing. The crowd participation was awesome, the band performance was intense and half the crowd got on stage to end the show and it was just spectacular.
If you think the front man is a douche, you must not have talked to him much we went and partied with him and went to the strip club after the show and he is one of the coolest mother fuckers i have ever met.
Personally i think this album is awesome, some people complain about the lyrics, but "Not The American Average" is such an awesome song because the lyrics aren't complex. Its a song about fucking a whore and it is hilarious and awesome. The whole album is DIRRRTYYY and their next will be even better.

I didn't say they weren't intense or energetic, but talk about a bland sound. They lack anything unique to set them apart from anybody else in that slowly deflating genre.
And thank you for making my point about the singer being a douche. I had no desire to talk to him after the stupid shit he said onstage. You must have thought the "IF WE PLAY AN ENCORE EVERY GIRL HAS TO THROW THEIR PANTIES AT THE STAGE" line was very cool.

HAHAHA you don't even talk to him and you think he is a douche because he is in a rock band and says some funny shit on stage? How old are you 40? Are you offended by people who consume alcohol too? Would you like him to have a bible study in the middle of his set or give you the chance to see some tits? Because if you want the bible study you better go to another show. And bland sound? I think their sound is bad ass i mean what do you expect there is a million other bands out there so of course they are going to sound like a few of them do you want then to make an instrument that is not yet known to man to separate themselves from others?
If you don't like the genre of music they are in then of course you aren't going to like the band, and if you are a homo you are obviously not going to like seeing female panties so i guess i see where you are coming from. So you are a gay 40 year old man that wants to have bible studies with little boys instead of go to a rock concert and have a good time?
i went to this very concert and must say that it was extremely entertaining. This band, their songs, and their live performances are all excellent. Danny Worsnop is far from a douche. He was more than happy to take pictures with fans (before and after the show), played an encore, allowed fans to fill the stage for said encore, then apparently hung out with fans after the show. Nothing about that is being a douche. If you don't like what he said while on stage, then get off your high horse and go fuck yourself. This band is far from being bland, and their lyrics are exactly what you should expect from a band of this genre (which is far from deflating). All in all, Asking Alexandria have released an incredible debut album and are definitely worth looking into.

Although it may not be the most creative or technical album in the genre I think it definitely shows a band with potential. They have gotten huge for the amount of time they've been a band. I think there's a lot more to come from Asking Alexandria...I hope so at least...

This album is complete garbage. I listened to the whole thing and it was just another generic, boring, wannabe metal band trying to be "hardcore". Real hardcore music is Have Heart, or Madball. Not The Devil Wears Prada or this god awful band. Overall album was a complete joke. Why do people like this? Lyrics are cliche, all members are complete douchebags, boring repeating guitar's and breakdowns, vocals are mediocre and remind me of shitty Attack Attack!, and it could put a baby to sleep. Honestly, one of the worst bands out right now. "Cross my heart and hope you die." That is generic as hell! Come on, what is wrong with everybody? THIS ALBUM IS FUCKING FILTH!!

Though they are generic and bland all around. P.S. I HATED THIS ALBUM!!!
The only thing good thing about them is their live show. Danny Worship is a beast at screaming. Just go to one of their shows, or look them up on Youtube.
STILL Terrible though!!!

Screw all the haters. This album is amazing for a debut. His screams are PERFECT. "ALerion" has some of the best screaming I've ever heard. And the only similarity to Attack Attack! is the techno parts and breakdowns...which Asking Alexandria has better breakdowns anyway. I like Attack Attack! but Asking Alexandria is way better... Not the best band ever, definitely. But not garbage!! You guys calling it garbage, make a better song instrumentally than "I Used To Have A Best Friend" and email it to me and I'll agree with you guys. But if you can't say anything nice about a band don't say anything it all cuz nobodys gives a crap what you think.

I completely agree about the lyrics haha! Music wise, while a little bland at times, is still above average in my opinion as well. Good review!
Wow, even this band's fans are pretty awful...

Why is everyone just ripping on this album, its got catchy choruses and amazing breakdowns and deep screams, as well as amazing guitar work. Nothing not to like imo

Looking back at this band, I have no respect for them because of the way they talk about women.
EDIT: In simpler words, this band is shit.

their next album should be called "Sit Down and Shut The Fuck Up"

Going to an album review that hasn't been posted on in quite some time and just stating the band sucks is trolling. Sorry. You must not have known that.

umm nooooo going to an album review and saying a band sucks is giving my opinion. whether its been posted for a long time or not is irrelevant. here's a breakdown: giving a personal preference towards something is considered offering an opinion. period end of story. so im sorry if you failed english or something but all i did was say what i thought.

I don't see how that has to do anything with English, but if you want to think that I'm not going to stop you. If you would have given insight to why you hate the band or actually expressed your opinion in a sensible, non-moronic manner, I may have taken it seriously.

you want insight? OKAY, how about the fact that ive seen these guys live at thrash and burn and it was the single most dreadful performance ive ever seen? not enough? okay, the fact that every song involves the EXACT SAME transition into the most stereotypical breakdowns bores me to death? what about how all their lyrics are cheap and generic and theyre merely following in the "make-violent-statements-toward-a-girl" footsteps of the equally terrible BMTH. they also have a bad habit of recycling riffs and i dare say STEALING them from another awful band, Attack Attack! was that "non-moronic" enough for you to take it seriously?????
