View Full Version : Would you listen to a song about God if the music was good?

My friends and I have been discussing whether or not people refuse to listen to religious bands simply because they're religious. So here's the question: If you heard a song and really liked the music but realized the lyrics were about God without being in-your-face-Jesus-saves, would you still listen to the song? Yes or no. Discuss.

Ignorance is pathetic.

A lot of atheists listen to a lot of Christian bands and think they're great. Why not like a song just because of Christian influence? That's just stubborn and narrow minded.

I am Christian and I listen to bands that don't believe in God and have some lyrics that are, to an extent, anti-religious. It doesn't bother me.

five iron frenzy is a christian ska band, and I still listen to them. faith is not a bad thing. but when it becomes overly cheezy then, yeah I will ignore it.

Yes, but it's a two way street. If the band is respectful and they don't push their beliefs on fans, I'd keep listening. If I found out the band was very preachy and didn't accept other peoples views, I'd probably stop listening because of their attitude, not because of the song.

I still enjoy me some "Jesus Walks" and the occasional Underoath.

Why does it matter how a band carries themself if you like thier music? I couldn't imagine deleting songs from my computer because the band that i like has a bad attitude.

i'm agnostic, and some of my favorite bands have heavy christian influences. as long as they aren't in your face jesus lyrics, you can typically interpret the lyrics your own way, even if when the band wrote it they were meaning god/jesus.

There's a limit to what I'll listen to, if it's over the top preaching, then i'll give it a miss, but I can't see what's wrong with having an influence from whatever God you'll believe in, it's the same as bands singing parties and stuff, you either agree with what they're writing about or you don't. If you find you're own way to relate to the song then it's all good.

I don't understand how a band's religious views would have any impact on whether i like them.

I don't mind religious lyrics. I think they are great inspiration. The only thing is when a song is 100% about how Jesus loves me and how he is amazing and whatever I get turned off. But if the song is really good I'll still listen.

For example
Anberlin, Relient K, The Classic Crime, The Almost are all inspired by religion in some ways but I still like them.

Did not know they were a christian band. Although I have only listened to them a couple times.

Why is that? There are bands where the guys are total douche bags, but I still listen to them.

I'll listen to pretty much anything, although I enjoy listening to some Jesus music, as long as it sounds good.

Of course the people who voted no won't explain themselves because the majority vote is yes.

Would be nice if one of you gave your reasoning.

At least if a band is singing about their faith you know they're being honest with their music.

I'm agnostic I guess, but I'm all about mwY. It's dumb not to like a band for their religious beliefs, maybe if a band wrote a song about hating the disabled or (like brokencyde) rape, I wouldn't listen to them.

Good music is good music, who cares what the band believes

It doesn't matter to me; I'd even say that if the band is especially passionate about their beliefs if often adds a lot to their music.

If the music AND the lyrics were good. But that goes for songs dealing with any subject matter.

Lirr168
12/20/09, 06:23 PM
It doesn't matter to me, but I do think it's more creative when the references are subtle. It doesn't take much creative energy to go on and on about Jesus; a well-crafted metaphor goes a long way toward impressing me.

I'm atheist but listen to quite a few "religious" bands. Not "praise" or songs that you'd hear in church-type stuff, but hell, one of my favorite bands is Between the Trees, who has quite a few blatant religious lyrics.

its a lot like the bible: if people would treat it as a metaphor, I think people there would be less bat shit crazy christians.

Without a doubt, yes. Like other people said, good music is good music.

My pet peeve comes when the band tries to preach to you live. I understand thanking God, or whoever you believe in, but one time is enough. Let your music do the rest of the talking.

If a band believes in meatloaf and writes a decent, passionate song about it, it would still get my vote. Like people said on here already, it's better to see that musicians are passionate about what they write through their beliefs, whether they're religious views or other topics. Now, if a song was about getting drunk, partying, getting laid, et cetera... that shit turns me off. Immature lyrics don't sit with me too well. I'll even extend the list to half-assed lyrics as well or songs that clearly seem like a producer or hired songwriters had a lot to do with the music and not the artist that is being pushed by a record label.

"You're the one I neeeeeeed!"
"I don't wanna be like youuuuuuuu!"
"I love you in more ways than you'll ever knowwwww!"

...just a few examples of half-assed lyrics and/or engineered crap.

Yeah, of course. I listen to some Christian bands. I also listen to bands that sing about partying and whatnot. The lyrical content doesn't always have to be taken to heart.

as a recovering-catholic myself, i can say i enjoy Underoath, TDWP, and Ivoryline. that being said, if a song is overtly Jesus-loving, I will pass on it. i.e. The Almost's "Dirty and Left Out"

I was into that song until I heard the end. All the master, savior stuff just makes me uncomfortable listening it to. Still love the band though. And I still like it but the ending really stops me from relating to the song or interpreting in it a different way.

same with me. at first, i could relate, just like i can relate to most of Aaron's stuff. the ending however, was just to much, and i felt uncomfortable listening to it as well. it ruined the song for me.

No. And it's not cause the band is religious. I'm fine with that. But I would get the song stuck in my head and I'd know I was singing something religious, which I don't do because I don't believe in religion. That would bug the fuck out of me.

That kind of makes sense. I can see why that might make you feel like a hypocrite or something. Props for a legit statement.

That's like a vegetarian feeling like a hypocrite for getting the Oscar Myer song stuck in their head. Catchy is catchy.
