Rythym and Blues - though it has obviously strayed quite a bit away from it's roots, I know there have to be some fans of contemporary R&B and or classics. Prior threads have failed hard and/or were started flatly.
On topic - As for me, I'm enjoying Ryan Leslie's new album quite a bit.

I'm not too keen on a lot of the contemporary stuff, but I love the classic period of Motown and 60's-70's R&B/Soul in general. Arthur Alexander, Marvin Gaye, Curtis Mayfield, Otis Redding, Al Green, Solomon Burke, Stevie Wonder, Aretha Franklin, Etta James, Smokey Robinson/The Miracles, Temptations, Supremes, Four Tops, and so on haha.
There are some fantastic modern artists though, it's just unfortunate how hard they are to come by.

Yeah, the genre has basically turned into a completely different beast and just adopted the name from the earlier generation.

Haha, we have ridiculously similar tastes in music.
Marvin Gaye is the man. Aside from The Beatles he is my favorite artist. Curtis Mayfield is a genius. Those are my top two. But old R&B is probably my favorite genre.

Haha, awesome. :highfive:
You can't go wrong with either of those two, but Curtis in particular is probably my favorite Soul artist. So many great albums and such a huge influence. His stuff with The Impressions is really good too.

I agree, I think the Impressions are one of the most underrated soul groups because the Motown groups are so popular. The Superfly soundtrack and Curtis are two of my favorite albums, and I enjoy a lot of his later work as well, just not to the same degree.

ZZ Hill. StreetSpirit hit the other good ones. I feel like Mayer Hawthorne is continuing the classic R&B vibe well.

Does anyone wanna rec me R Kelly albums that are actually good? Contemporary would be best, I don't really wanna go all the way back to 12 play.

not sure if he fully counts, but I saw a performance by Raphael Saadiq on PBS recently and I was extremely impressed. downloaded The Way I See It but have yet to listen. I grew up on a lot of this too and need to get more of it on my iPod because I don't have much besides Marvin Gaye

Really enjoyed this...I got a young Stevie Wonder vibe from him in the beginning.

been bumpin' the shit out of some old-school maxwell lately; did not know his first album was so widely praised. now i see why, haha. love this older neo-soul/r&b shit. need to get into some more of it. don't know if i'll ever stop spinning urban hang suite anytime soon, it's so damn good.

Soooo goood. My favorite is still "Wicked Games" however. Such an intense song.

A lot of the usual soul suspects have been mentioned. Which is all very well, because many of them are very good. But someone who unfortunately always seems to miss the lists here it seems is:

If you haven't heard this, definitely give it a spin, or even find a few youtube streams. Treat yourselves.

Using this thread for recs since my only real exposure has been The Weeknd and Frank Ocean, and I really want to explore some more.

This isn't strictly R&B (actually this is a treasure from the ska world), but dabbles in the same R&B musical realms & has one of the great voices of modern(ish) times. So smooth & soulful, almost meditative. Introducing Beres Hammond.

yeah, i cannot wait for his new mixtape to come out. i think my favorite is a tie between 'the party & the after party' and 'coming down'. 'wicked games' is really good too, though.
don't know how many of ya'll are into contemporary r&b, but lloyd's newest release king of hearts has been getting praise and it's damn good. polow da don handles most of the production and they make a great combo. a couple of my favorites are below, give it a listen:

Kinda dismissed this dude after only hearing Birthday Sex, but I was wrong. This dude is good. Waiter is one of my favorite things I've heard recently.
