View Full Version : Favorite Albums of the Decade

I've been asking people what their favorite albums from the last 10 years are. I'm talking the ones that you'd save from your house if it were burning down. The only stipulations I have are that you can have up to but no more than 25 albums, and that you can only have one album from 2009 on it, because this isn't about the music you've been digging recently.

Mine are, in somewhat particular order:

The Weakerthans - Left and Leaving
The Lawrence Arms - The Greatest Story Ever Told
Glassjaw - Worship and Tribute
BT - This Binary Universe
Thrice - Vheissu
Brand New - Your Favorite Weapon
Days Away - Mapping an Invisible World
Hey Mercedes - Everynight Fire Works
The Hold Steady - Boys And Girls In America
Hot Water Music - The New What Next
Jimmy Eat World - Futures
M83 - Before The Dawn Heals Us
The Postal Service - Give Up
Audio Karate - Lady Melody
Minus The Bear - Menos El Oso
Motion City Soundtrack - Commit This To Memory
Osker - Idle Will Kill
P.O.S. - Audition
Something Corporate - North
Blink-182 - Blink-182
This Will Destroy You - This Will Destroy You
Radiohead - Hail To The Thief
Jurassic 5 - Quality Control
Erik Mongrain - Fates
Every Time I Die - Hot Damn!

Macbeth.

agree with your list - plus more radiohead, alexisonfire, godspeed you black emperor, and maybe muse.

then there's weezer and green day that deserve to be on the list, I just don't like them.

I'm pretty sure there's another thread like this.
I looked for one but couldn't find any. Admittedly, I only looked through like, the first two pages. Sorry if I'm repeating this.
Hail To The Thief and Before The Dawn Heals Us are not the best albums from this decade of their respective bands.
But it's not about what that. It's about the music that you've really loved over the past 10 years. I'm well aware that 99% of people would choose Kid A for a Radiohead album, but I listen to Hail To The Thief way more because I enjoy it more.

Honestly, I find Dead Cities to be a little grating sonically. I don't know what it is, but the tones used on most of their synths just bug me on that album. It's still a great album, though.

i'd rank 'em this way:

1. digital shades, vol. 1
2. dead cities, red seas, and lost ghosts = before the dawn heals us
3. m83
4. saturdays = youth

before the dawn heals us introduced me to m83, so i still hold it up high. easily their most accessible album though

While I disagree in that I think there's nothing wrong with featuring any number of albums from one band given that they are deserving of the praise, I agree the Radiohead acclaim is somewhat unwarranted. With that said, the list is pretty good. It's a collaboration of ten or tweleve people that shaped up in a fine depiction of the last ten years, and The Glow Pt. 2 made the list so I really can't complain.

I didn't realize it was a collaboration of that many people. I just think having that many albums from one band shows a lack of... I don't know, creativity. Doesn't sound like the right word, but hopefully you get what I mean. I totally get Kid A for being what it was when it came out, I totally get In Rainbows for its impact on music for decades to come, and I'm predisposed to Hail To The Thief. I didn't get having Amnesiac on it, though, even with the rationale.

But I'm nitpicking. It's a good list. Definitely the best list I've seen published from a collective so far.

And see, In Rainbows and Hail To the Thief didn't make my list. haha This is what seems to happen when people discuss Radiohead. I guess you could assume it's a lack of exposure/creativity, or you could simply disagree with the list. I mean, I don't agree with the list either, but that's an inevitable result of any collaboration.
But I'm nitpicking. It's a good list. Definitely the best list I've seen published from a collective so far.

13. The Appleseed Cast - Low Level Owl Volumes I and II

Bless your soul.

But it's not about what that. It's about the music that you've really loved over the past 10 years.
Amen

Saturdays = Youth is just painfully boring, in my opinion.
Out of general curiousity, do you enjoy We Own The Sky?

Good to see this name tossed around. Nostalgia band for me.
My favorite will always be Anatomy though!

Just because other people have it on their's doesn't mean he can't like it. Kid A is a brilliant album. I do realize it is slightly overblown but it is adored by many people, so it's not surprising that it's showing up on a lot of people's list.

I have a very cliche list, but meh.

Arcade Fire - Funeral. Some of the songs on this album are my all time favourite. "In The Backseat" is one of the best album closers I've ever heard.

Raconteurs - Consolers of the Lonely. Jack White is one of my favourite musicians, and this album shows how great he is.

Radiohead - Kid A. It was a raining day and a trip on a crappy bus when I realised the greatness of this album. Not sure what my favourite track is, I love all of them. The last track annoys me though. It stops at around 3 minutes in, then a minute later it returns for a few seconds.

Fall Out Boy - Take This To Your Grave. I always use this album as an example to prove people wrong when they mock Fall Out Boy. Such a great album! "Patrons Saints of Liars and Fakes" is such a good song too. Also the perfect breakup album. ;-)

Other favourites
Brand New - The Devil and God Inside Me Are Raging.
Muse - Absolution
Fleet Foxes - Fleet Foxes
Thrice - Vheissu

I think this is a great list except for the fact that there's 4 Radiohead albums on it. Not that Radiohead isn't an amazing band worthy of recognition, but no best albums of the decade list should have almost a tenth of it be from one band.

I'm gonna have to disagree with this. When it's the best albums of the decade, it shouldn't matter who wrote the album and should be based solely on the album's contents.

No, you're right, it should be on content. I guess where I disagree with that particular list is that Radiohead had 4 albums that should be included. If we're going with the most objective approach we can with a best of the decade list, then Kid A and In Rainbows should be on it. I can think of a lot of albums that should be on it before Hail To The Thief and Amnesiac (especially Amnesiac), though.

But again, I was just nitpicking the list, and didn't realize at first that it was a list made by like 10 people. Plus, the whole point of this thread is to focus on everyone's personal favorites.

Not at all. I can see why putting something like Yellowcard over Kid A is pretty wrong, but the list is from most meaningful to least, and Lights & Sounds though lightyears away from being as good as Kid A is better to me is because of what I was going through at the time, and when I hear it I get back to that place and most the songs on there have special meaning. Kid A is incredible, but no real backstory for me.

I disagree about Apollo. Only a few songs are really worthwhile, the rest is just fluff. Second Stage and In Keeping Secrets are the only Coheed albums worth owning. I thought the last one was pretty forgettable, though. I always felt that between In Keeping Secrets and Apollo 1 they got some weird inflated ego and decided to go... idk, uber-rock ala Rush and shit, and it just sounded sort of tacky to me.

I actually like all of their albums. Not nearly enough to put on a list like this, but enough to throw on every once in a while. They're more of a 'put on shuffle' band for me.

I dunno. I'm not into the fact that SSTB is so much more raw and unrefined. I know some people would love that aspect about it, but it isn't for me. Though Everything Evil is far and away one of the band's best songs. Love it. I think Good Apollo 1 is their second best for me, simply because it feels like a journey from start to finish. There isn't one song on it that is bad, in my opinion. Good Apollo 2 was hit and miss for me. But it's indesputable that In Keeping Secrets is their best album. The Crowing is my favourite Coheed song, with The Light and the Glass and the title track coming in close behind.

See, I got SSTB when it came out, so for me it's Coheed in their purest sense. It's not so much about the raw or unrefined nature, but about the fact that it's them before they got obsessed with the idea of being the most progressive rock band in the scene. There's no bullshit, which I felt the two Apollos had. IKS is their best album by far, which I feel is much more of a journey than Apollo 1. I was sort of put off on Apollo 1 from the start. Having "Always & Never" between the opening track and "Welcome Home" left a bad taste in my mouth from the second I heard it. Totally destroyed the instrumental-to-awesome song thing from SSTB and IKS, plus has no flow whatsoever. I also find the final quartet of Apollo 1 to be mostly a wank-fest, with the exception of the second half of III when they go into the "Blood Red Summer" allusive part. But I totally agree with you that "Everything Evil" is their best track.

I really can only stand "Welcome Home," "Once Upon Your Dead Body," and "The Lying Lies" (which is such horrendous grammar that it pisses me off to write it) most days. Everything else is sort of meh to me, especially when IKS or SSTB are just a short scroll down the Itunes library.

Welcome Home and Once Upon... are two of the weakest on the album for me honestly. >_>
I may only feel like that for Welcome Home because it's so overplayed, between me listening to the album, playing the original Rock Band, my friend having it on repeat pretty much when I'm at his house, etc.

The real question is, what are 2008 Ryan's albums of the decade?

i'd have not likely answered this thread because i was aware of my ignorance. now, 2007 ryan on the other hand...

And this may cause trouble but In Rainbows is better than Kid A.

and gyarados is better than dragonite, right? :-p

Has anyone considered 'Funeral' by Arcade Fire? (http://www.alterthepress.com/search/label/Albums%20of%20the%20Decade)

I'm not sure which list is better/worse: this or pitchfork's.

To be fair, that Top 30 lists is my personal favourite albums, rather than an actual Top 30, if that makes sense.

In current Gen terms, Gyara is better, so what are you saying here?

Speaking of Pokemon, I haven't played in forever, but I'm so pumped for the Gold and Silver remakes.

I agree that "Welcome Home" has definitely been overplayed, but it's still a bitchin' rock song.

Very happy to see Is Dead on there. One of those albums that just barely missed my list.

I mean, he's faster and can learn ice beam right?

No contest.

Coheed is probably my favorite band. I didn't love NWFT, but I still got a huge nostalgia kick out of it, and there were still a good 5 or 6 songs that I love.

It goes back and forth between SSTB and IKS for me. I used to not really care for GA either, but now I really dig it. Its just kind of different.

Yes and yes, but that really has very little to do with it. Dragonite also gets Ice Beam, by the way.

yeahbut... dragonite has like a double weakness to it, no?

I guess I wasn't talking about as a piece of your party, but more like a one on one kind of thing.

Oh, well in that case it depends on the set of each, but remember Gyara is 4x weak to Electric and Dragonite has Thunderbolt. Gyara has bad Special Attack so its Ice Beam would be pretty weak. It gets Ice Fang though, which would do a lot of damage to Dragonite. But like I said, who would win would only depend on the set of each. If both are Max Speed Jolly then Gyara would have the advantage, but if Dragonite was faster or EV'd Defensive enough to survive an Ice Fang then Dnite would probably come out on top. ;D

haha, it's not really a head to head matchup you see very often. Neither is really a counter for the other using their normal sets. Interesting to theorymon about, I suppose.
