Formerly one of the main songwriters in Drive By Truckers. Figured he deserved his own thread since he's now released two solo records, the latest with a backing band called The 400 Unit. His stuff is different (read: less southern rock influenced) from that of the Truckers, but it still fits nicely into the alt-country/americana genre and if you're into that kind of thing then I'm sure you'll enjoy him.

I miss his presence in DBT but his solo work is really good too and they're still making quality music without him so whatever. Good thread.

Both of his albums are really good but I think it's a little weird to hear him on his own without Cooley and Hood's songs backing him, could just be me though. If you like the stuff he wrote for DBT like "Goddamn Lonely Love" and "Decoration Day" then you'll love his solo work.

Such a huge loss for them. Brighter Than Creation's Dark proved that they're still a great band without him though and I think it's pretty cool that Shonna Tucker is starting to play a bigger role. But they definitely aren't the same without him.

Just got into Here We Rest recently, the first of his solo releases I've picked up even though I'm a really big DBT fan. I like it a lot, and "Alabama Pines" is just a fantastic song in particular.

Here We Rest was one of my favorite albums from last year. No clue why it went so ignored around here.
