Band I slept on last year that I’m in love with now
Gaslight Anthem (2008)

10 Favorite Albums of 2009
Pet Shop Boys – Yes (fantastic new album from synthpop legends proved that they are writing some of the best material of their career right now)

Mayer Hawthorne – A Strange Arrangement (a white dude from Ann Arbor, MI writes and records a love letter to ‘70s soul and hits a homerun)

Mastodon – Crack the Skye (worth the hype they are showered with)

La Roux – La Roux (synthpop magic with icy vocals and “Cover My Eyes” is a contender for song of the year)

Kiss – Sonic Boom (the band that got me into music makes the best album they’ve done since their glory days)

Ladyhawke – Ladyhawke (it was a fine year for synthpop and this album is stuffed to the rafters with infectious melodies)

The Mary Onettes – Islands (these Swedes haven’t gotten the attention from the hipsters in Williamsburg, Portland, and Silver Lake yet, but their brand of jangly pop definitely deserves more listeners)

Séance – Awakening of the Gods (comeback album from underappreciated ‘90s band that shows the kids how raw death metal should be done)

Neon Indian – Psychic Chasms (lush analog synthesizers and ‘80s sun-kissed melodies make this the bedroom indiepop record of the year)

Kylesa – Static Tensions (Though their bros in Baroness usually get the lion’s share of critical praise, Kylesa made the better album this year)

Best Live Album of the Year
Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers – The Live Anthology (the best bar band that ever was captured in a series of career spanning live performances)

2009 Rookie of the Year
La Roux – (not sure if they’ll ever find a wide audience in the States but I have a feeling they are capable of recording some classic stuff down the line)

Best Music Video of 2009
Depeche Mode – “Wrong” directed by Patrick Daughters (like a David Cronenberg movie squeezed into a 3 minutes)

Best Remix of 2009
Sally Shapiro – “Snow In July” remixed by Le Prix (like something you would hear in an Italian coke dealer’s apartment circa 1980)

Glad to see someone loved "Blood Bank" as much as I did.

Nice to see Kylesa get a nod, but it wasn't better than Baroness' release.
