View Full Version : Should fat people have to have fat gaming avatars and game restrictions?[Tech Roundup

CyberInferno

Please read the article! Microsoft has filed for a patent that would make obese people have fat avatars, would limit their gameplay time, and would block them from competing at certain levels (http://games.slashdot.org/story/09/12/18/1649253/Microsoft-Seeks-Patent-On-Shaming-Fat-Gamers?from=rss&utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+Slashdot%2Fsla shdot+%28Slashdot%29). Fair or unfair?

This poll is in conjunction with this week's Technology Round-up (http://www.absolutepunk.net/showthread.php?t=1481942).

Holy.. that's crazy. o.o But maybe it's good?
I don't know how I feel about it.
What if they have a disease where they can't control their weight?

Edit:

Wouldn't they be able to lie on those questions though? It could be ineffective.

This is actually an interesting topic, well not the avfatar thing but the topic of obesity discrimination. My mom works for Kaiser and she said the hot button topic right now is about obesity discrimination and charging more for health care for those who are considered morbidly obese. Discrimination or not? I guess it makes some sense when people aren't taking care of themselves but taking up more health care tax money for something that is avoidable

Intended? Either way, lolz.

But in response to the OP, I don't think it would be legal.

charging higher premiums for overweight people makes sense though.

i mean, i smoke. so naturally, my decision to smoke raises my rates. their decision to eat unhealthy should do the same thing.

How about a 20% fat tax at supermarkets and mandatory gym visits. Why don't we just make shock collars that we put around fat peoples necks and when they walk into fast food chains we shock them. That'll make them shape up. We should just make a caste system, I'm done with all these fatties thinking they have human rights. They honestly believe they're equal to the skinny people!?

jwicklun
12/21/09, 07:28 PM
fuck no its not discriminatory. fat fucks are fat because like 95% of them choose to be fat

I have no sympathy for the obese. If you cant choose between eating a whole pizza and like a ham sandwich then you deserve to be looked down upon and restricted from things that make you more fat

Fuck all these limp-dick excuses that you cant exercise or you have a glandular problem, you can still eat either less or more healthy things.

Almost everyone with type II diabetes deserves to die a slow painful death in their fat-fuck of a body. The main cause of type II is from lack of exercise and eating unhealthy foods to the point that they become insulin resistant which means your body is capable of storing more fat because you have so much goddamn fatty foods inside of you for such a long period of time that your fat body cant get rid of it (via lack of exercise) and you arent using your fat foods as energy so your body is put in fat-storing overdrive bc of an insulin deficit

unless your type 2 is caused by having some other hormone imbalance like acromegaly or cushing's syndrome, you are a lazy fat fuck of a person.

God forbid you exercise and eat somewhat healthy, or at least not a weeks worth of food in a day.

And please, let me know if any of this isnt true or misleading.
as harsh as this statement is, there is some truth to it. Yeah it's true that not all of us have the time to exercise, but we have the capabitities to sacrifcing the unhealthy foods, and at least giving up 30 minutes of our day doing some sort of cardio workout. I understand that some part of obesity can be genetics, but it does not mean you cannot lose the weight.

This is illegal in so many ways.
Microsoft might be able to get away with the game limitations if it can find enough doctors to agree that it is unsafe for obese people to play at certain levels. Like putting restrictions on roller coasters. I don't think it's fair at all, but there might be a legal loophole for them on that aspect.

Regarding the fat avatars, it's completely ridiculous.

Gaming does not correlate to obesity. I game all the fucking time, and I'm not obese. Eating a lot of food that's EXTREMELY bad for you is going to make you obese. Unless Microsoft plans on controlling the food market, this idea is completely and utterly fucked. It'd be an instant lawsuit for them. It'll never happen.

Okay, so for all of you who think it's a person's own fault that they're overweight, and it's their decision to stay that way:

If it is indeed their decision, then who is Microsoft to force their hand, if sitting on the internet is what they want? This logic is contradictory and flawed. And yes, discriminatory logic, absolutely.

What is ignorant about what I said? Its quite opinionated but facts is facts braah. Im studying health and fitness and no a thing or 2 about the effects of obesity on the body. Yes I admit what I said is harsh but the facts are very true. People battle with weight all the time but their approach is embarrassing at best for the majority. Thinking not getting whipped cream on their ice cream pie cake or buying wii fit are all jokes. Obesity shouldnt be tolerated unless its caused by genetic defects. Our bodies cannot handle the weight of obesity. Most diseases or conditions are either caused or amplified because of unhealthy weight. 6 out of the top 10 ways Americans die every year are weight related. Alzheimer's and kidney disease are sped up by how much you weigh, diabetes, stroke, heart disease

What do you mean obesity shouldn't be tolerated? It's not YOUR fucking problem. Hey I know, let's put fat people into camps and feed them 900 calories per day and force them to work. And if that doesn't get them out of our sight, let's just pitch them into a furnace and be done with it!

Saying that obesity shouldn't be tolerated is like saying people with crooked teeth or balding hair should be eliminated from society so you don't have to look at them.

If you're so adamant that it's THEIR choice, thus they deserve what they get, then why the hell are you also trying to strip choice FROM them? Let them do whatever the fuck they want. It has NOTHING to do with you. It's not your business nor your problem.

fuck well only half of my post was posted but what got cut out was how obese people take more medical leave from work and go to the doctors more often than healthy people costing us tax payers billions of dollars spent on medical treatment and modifications for their oversized bodies and loses billions of dollars in revenue due to time off of work. So yes, it costs everyone that pays taxes.

People complain about all the government spending and thats one easy way to slow billions of dollars from bleeding out. They are leaches on our economy whether people know it or not.

If you are willing to argue you shoudnt be willing to listen so look at this and tell me fat people arent a burden:

thats right 42.4 billion in one year just in California alone. Thats for medical costs and work loss combined. 42.4 billion that if these people were not obese could be spent on anything else.

What it boils down to is people being too selfish and glutton and are wasting healthy individuals money

Focusing on the avatar and info, Microsoft would taking out a large fantasy aspect out of gaming. Everyone registers his or her avatar as they so feel. Likely, there is something about their character that is altered to their liking and Microsoft is taking a step to eliminate that privilege.

Registering personal info such as socioeconomic class and intelligence quotient is simply asking for trouble. Would this info be available for the public to see as well?

No one should be able to limit anyone's gametime, except if it's like a 12 year old or something. And not letting them compete because their fatfucks? That's like drug testing at competitions. The first bolded statement made me lol. The second one I totally agree with. The entire thing is ridiculous, in my opinion. I don't have Xbox, but my brother's avatar looks exactly like John Lennon, and I can assure you he looks nothing like him in real life.

People should be able to design their avatars however they want..?

Haha, I'm glad I brought a chuckle.

One of my friends avatar is Mr. T., another is Kratos from God of War and my girlfriend's best friend is Lara Croft. For a couple months after the avatars first came out, my best friend and I were McCain & Obama, respectively.

Honestly when I saw things in my post being bolded I thought you were gonna start arguing with me about something. 8 times out of 10 that's what happens.

even if some people voted yes for a joke, that's still a lot of people who are blatantly discriminatory, which is plain ridiculous

I am considered obese by the standards of the FDA, and I was initially offended after reading this poll inquiry, but then after considering it, I'm more convicted than anything. Obesity is a self-inflicted condition, and it can be changed. Being offended won't help me lose weight, but realizing the need for change will.

now if this policy was something you could sign up for if you wanted to have your gaming time reduced to better yourself, like the quote above me entails, that could be a pretty good thing, but I still don't think changing your avatar to make you look fat as a way to enact a policy is necessary, or even legal.

While I think it's good for them to look out for their health, that is absolutely ridiculous. This is America, home of the free -- let them play however much the want. No way this will ever go through.

Of course it's discrimination. Isn't that the point? The reasoning is good, but the way it's conducted is really crappy. There are millions of better ways to have people do more exercise than to publicly show the rest of the world they're having weight issues.

as uncomfortable as overweight people make me, this is ridiculous. i have negative qualities or habits and should i not be able to do something i enjoy, like play drums because i smoke in my spare time. no. bullshit......although i dislike video games and fat people.

I am bewildered by the number of people who have agreed to the content of this poll, hahaha. HEY GUYS, LET'S MAKE BLACK PEOPLE'S VIDEO GAME CHARACTERS FIGHT WITH FRIED CHICKEN! Seriously, what the FUCK.

I can't believe the number of human abominations on the internet. You win this thread.

I don't think so. I mean, when you create an avatar you should display what you truly look like, but no one should take away the right for you to make yourself look like whatever you want.

Man, a lot of you guys are getting extremely worked up over this. My two seconds, forced? No. Ability to have that as an option to help them maintain their heath? Yes. Give the people choices, don't force it on them.

Also, to everyone "disgusted" by all the "retards" and "abominations" here and therefore, on the Internet, where the hell have you been? What Internet are you on where everyone is nice and loves each other?
