No official thread yet? Lame. Los Angeles is one of the few bright spots from 2008. Discuss.

FlyLo is pretty sick. Los Angelos is a really great example of his style but its taken to the max, it can be a little much at times. id like to see him do a project with a rapper, like a full album not just remixes here and there.

his beat mixtapes are sick though.

Vinh turned me on to Los Angeles last year. It's a really, really cool record. I know the scratchy record sound is just one small facet of the recording, but it has such a pronounced effect on the tracks and serves as a fantastic framework for the rest of the swirling sounds. Los Angeles is of the best Downtempo/Electronic Hip Hop works of the decade, by my estimation.

You know, he reminds me of a younger, more ambitious Tricky. If you listen to Nearly God and Los Angeles back-to-back, it's really quite obvious. That's a very good thing.

Once, and only once. I don't own it. I can't find it at my shop, so I listened to my ex's vinyl pressing once. I liked it. I can't say "more or less than Los Angeles" until I actually listen to it more, and I can't do that at the moment.

I like that this is really different from Los Angeles. These records are different enough that I listen to them in different moods, which usually isn't the case with electronic projects. Most electronic artists just work at perfecting the same idea over time, but FlyLo moved onto bigger and very different things.

Great read as always, Brian.

Your review mentioned how Thom Yorke's presence might have influenced the popularity of the album. For me personally, while it certainly was the case that Cosmogramma caught my attention because of the Yorke collab, when I listened to that particular track, it was clear that FlyLo was in control of the song. I didn't feel as if Yorke's part overshadowed the song or was even what made it an excellent track. I don't mean that in the sense that his voice didn't add anything though, because it complemented the song very well.

I completely agree. I almost neglected to include the track because I focused on the more innovative aspects of the album and realized when I was almost finished "shit, people actually care about this song that I haven't even mentioned", but yeah, it's definitely a FlyLo joint with Thom Yorke guest starring.

One Beat. I don't know why last.fm says that that was the first time I listened to it, I've definitely rocked that album before.

I adore Sleater-Kinney. One Beat is awesome. The eponymous track is such a fantastic opener. If you think like Thomas Edison, would you invent a world for me? My favorite Sleater-Kinney album is Call the Doctor, with its more Punk-ish sound and greater focus on gender inequality, but their albums are so consistently great, you can close your eyes and point at one of their records and rest assured in the fact that you picked something, at the very least, listenable.

...and FlyLo's cool.

Be sure to give impressions. I've really warmed up to Cosmogramma recently (not that it was alienating initially - it's more FlyLo and sounds very much like his past work [in a good way], but it wasn't as immediately catchy to me as Los Angeles. However, it proved to be a good grower album).

I've read that it's a close-up of melting rubber, but I'm not totally sure.

I was under the impression (and by "under the impression," I mean "I fucking guessed by staring a hole in it for the duration of twenty minutes once") that it was a helmet of some kind, but then, I don't have the deductive skills of Batman.

I can kinda see it (the melting rubber thing). It's so damn ambiguous that it could be anything, almost.

P.S.: Yes, I did have to throw my love for Linkin Park out there. Can't have people thinking I'm suddenly cool or something because I want to get into Flying Lotus.

Only streamed a couple tracks from cosmogramma. I love how in his own musical style, steve manages to develop himself and incorporate something new. Recoiled is a fucking amazing track. This man is an inspiration to me, so I won't give it a full listen until I have a paid hardcopy.

It's different. He puts lots of dance elements in it but it isn't like a tear your face off live experience. Lots of heavy bass, some ambience thrown in between parts, he'll throw in some hip-hop to get the energy going, all around great vibes. It's all very impromptu. Also, he's a hilarious guy and talks to the audience a bit.
