if you had to build a franchise around one of these 3 players who would you choose?
bigmike
06/27/06, 03:48 PM
i took todd jones for 2 reasons.
1.) he's the oldest and will be around the shortest amount of time to fuck your franchise up.
2.) he's put together a few good years in the past, maybe you luck out, have him do really well and then trade him midseason
the 2nd, obviously isn't happening this year, though.

Scott. he's got 10 strikeouts and 5 walks in 30 innings. There is no sign in him that says he'll get it together.

He's a vet with 240 career saves, and he was great last year. He's going through a rough patch, but I'll trust his expierence as a closer and hope he'll get it back together.

Scott.. he's had 4 or 5 good years in his career, in terms of being a closer. and he hasn't put up back to back good years since 1999-2000. and this isn't me just being a cynical fan. this is being realistic. he's not the answer as a closer.

he has 20 saves and its not even midpoint through the season. yeah i'd hate him for being the closer on the team with the best record in MLB. I fucking hate it on here when mets, red sox, yankees and tigers fans bitch about a game. Look at your records, you have no reason to be pissed. My pirates have lost 12 in a row and are losing 3-0 already against the White Sox, and are headed for their worst season in at least 20 years. I should be bitching ten times as much as all you guys.

I know but he's acting like todd jones is oliver perez. He'd be the closer on more than half of the teams in MLB with those stats.
edit: maybe perez will become a better closer than jones, they just sent him down to the pen, I guess a 2-10 record with a 6.63 ERA isnt starting credentials for the Pirates anymore.

wait, are you the kid that once said that they'd play .500 ball the rest of the way and would have 80+ wins?
and just because my teams doing amazingly well I'm not allowed to be concerned that we have a closer with 20 saves but has allowed 40 hits in 30 innings or is closing in on already having half as many walks as he did all of last year with 1/6th the amount of strikeouts? is he getting the job done? meh, 20 saves indicate he's doing just well enough to not lose. he is not someone i want holding the ball in the 9th inning with a one run lead in the ALCS or WS.
And the fact that you have terrible management/front office people doesn't mean I don't have the right to bitch about our biggest, most glaring weakness.

yeah. jones is really doing well. outside of his 20 saves his numbers are atrocious and he would not be the closer on over half the teams in the MLB.
6.60 ERA, 40 H, 10 K, 5 BB, 22 ER in only 30 IP, 60 Total bases allowed (he had 75 all of last year), 1.50 WHIP which isn't good for a closer, .484 Opponent SLG %, .356 Opponent OBP, and .323 Opponent Batting Average.
There's other numbers than Saves for a closer. he's doing just enough to not lose the game. he's not dominant like a closer should be. there's a hell of a lot of closers I'd take right now over Todd Jones.
In fact, he's the 4th best reliever on the team.
On the tigers alone, i'd take the following over Jones:
Rodney
Zumaya
Walker
and in the rest of the MLB:
Mariano Rivera
BJ Ryan
Jon Papelbon
Bobby Jenks
Bob Wickman
Joe Nathan
Chad Cordero
Huston Street
Trevor Hoffman
Francisco Rodriguez
Chris Ray
Tom Gordon
Derrick Turnbow
Billy Wagner
Akinori Otsuka
JJ Putz
Roberto Hernandez
Pedro Feliciano
Juan Rincon
Scot Shields, to name a few.

20 saves/26 chances = 77%
True not dominant like other closers but if youre playing a 7 game playoff series, he's gonna get the job done more than three out of 4 times. I dont think that qualifies as horrible.
edit: You forgot mike gonzalez, 30 SO in 29.2 IP with a 3.03 ERA and 12 saves.

You're a disgrace to your city's fans, this is not the first time...every single thread about anything from Michigan and you jump all over your team's back. The mere fact that you suggested you'd take JJ Putz over him (who is pitching decently but has ZERO closer expierence before this year) shows that you're overly bitter. UGH. 20 saves. 26 chances. There's been worse. That is the MAIN stat that identifies a closer's success.

yeah. because i haven't been all over the tigers nuts every chance I get gloating that i finally have a winning baseball team. but apparently you don't see that shit, scott. You've got a pretty selective reading memory.
And i cannot be concerned about Todd Jones, the weakest link on our team? Yes, he's 20/26. okay, that's pretty good. Nice. but he isn't the guy I want with the ball and the game on the line late in October, i don't care what number saves has. He hasn't had back to back good/great years since 99-2000.
And should I be proud of the Lions? Let me count the number of successes they've had in the last 16 years. oh wait, 1 trip to the NFC Title game when i was 5 and a wild card birth to promptly get sent home immediately. We ran off the BEST running back EVER in the history of the game, i don't care what anyone says, because we couldn't put together a good team around him.
The pistons I rarely talk bad about except for the fact that Flip got way too much shit for a team that underachieved in the playoffs and stole a series from Cleveland.
The Red Wings, like the pistons, underachieved in the playoffs and are going to fuck their goalie out of a job now despite the fact that it was horrible defense in front of him.
I don't shit talk Western Michigan one fucking bit.
Paul Davis is the softest C I've seen in the College game in the big ten in a long time. Continually hanging around the 3 point line, unwilling to utilize his strength and great feet in the paint, not to mention picking up way too many ticky tact fouls.
And now we're going to replace him with a kid compared to Bill Fucking Walton coming out of high school and has been so good in 4 years in east lansing that he hasn't seen significant playing time, and a freshman who is unproven, thus far.
We have no real guards outside of Travis Walton to replace Shannon Brown, and no guards on our roster hold the explosiveness that brown had. Plus, we're losing Maurice Ager.
And the only kid with significant playing time in the past that's still here is Drew Neitzel. he was touted as an offensive PG and a great floor general, none of which has shown in his 1st 2 years and I don't think he's really shown me anything to be super excited about.
Sorry if I don't get too excited over a mediocre Big Ten team this year. Next year we'll be better when we have two of the top 10 guards in the nation come to East Lansing, but this year will not be a good one based upon previous years success'.
but apparently you missed this from the other thread you took shots at me in. Again, nice selective reading.
Get the fuck off my nuts about the way I am as a fan, alright?

scott, just because someone criticizes their team, or a member of their team, doesnt mean they dont "die hard" with the team. what would you say about the vast majority of boston red sox fans? we're the most pessimistic group of people on the planet (the real fans, not the bandwagoners or the pink red sox hat crowd).
i think bigmike has every right to complain about todd jones sucking it up in the closers role ESPECIALLY since they have people who have been more capable sitting around (Zumaya couldn't do what Papelbon is doing? I doubt that...).
He has every RIGHT to have a head shaking next to the Red Wings, they got knocked out in the first fuckin round as the #1 seed. Even if the Oilers DID make the Finals, he still has every recourse to be fuckin disappointed and upset with what happened and complain about it.
He has every RIGHT to hate on the Lions... they fucking suck and they are run like garbage. I'd expect EVERY Lions fan to wear a goddamn bag on their head.
I have always felt like if there is something stupid being done with my team supporters of the team have the DUTY, not only the right but the DUTY to bitch, complain and be vocal about what they see as a wrong move. Sometimes, these things work out... (See: Nomar getting railroaded out of town for OSizzle and Mineiteniutihwiwuiuczzzzz in 2004).
And fuck it, if you don't give a fuck about what people think about what you say, why say anything at all? Isn't the entire point of the discourse to have a dialogue with people? How can you have a success discussion if you simply ignore the other side?

I stand by everything I said about Paul Davis. Dude had the talent to absolutely dominate the entire Big Ten. Did he? No. Did he put up good numbers? yes. But they could have been better. Not to mention he wasn't always showing up for every game. Look at last year's game in Illinois. 2 points. he's 6' fucking 11'', the dude should score 10 every game unless he get's hurt or fouls out in the first half. He didn't rebound as well as his numbers may indicate. He's a bad post defender and offensively he offers no typical big guy help. He looks timid to get in the paint and throw his body around. He's got excellent feet and could have, and should have wrecked the Big Ten.
And OMG!!!!!!! I've got shaking head smilies next to the two teams that finished with the best records in their entire leagues and both had disappointing finishes. Am I not allowed to be immensely disappointed that the Red Wings bowed out to Edmonton without really putting up a fight? Am I not allowed to be immensely disappointed that the Pistons looked like they quit in the Cleveland series minus game 7 and looked even worse in the Heat series? What do you want me to put the big grinning smiley?
This is the most ridiculous thing I've ever read on here. I don't know what your problem is with me or whatever, but just because i'm more realistic and don't bank on my lions being good this year or just because I'm disappointed at the two best professional teams in the state and their playoff exits, doesn't make me any less committed to my teams than you are to yours. So quit fucking talking down to me like I'm some fairweather, frontrunning fan. How many times have you seen Todd Jones pitch this year in a live game? Answer me that fucking question. Because if it's zero, you might want to rethink responding about a Todd Jones complaint when I've seen his every fucking outing this year. I didn't mean you had to read everything I've ever posted in the sports forum. I'm not critcizing the TIGERS i'm criticizing TODD JONES. I love the tigers. And i would love nothing more than for them to win it all this year, but that won't happen with todd Jones closing. especially when we have Fernando Rodney and Joel Zumaya with far surperior numbers. All I was saying is that you only see what I post about Todd Jones in threads outside of the MLB thread, where, in there I'm sucking the balls of every tiger constantly. He's just the weakest link on an otherwise very, very strong team.
And i can respect that you hate the way I am at a fan but to be so condescending and talk down to me for the way i am about my teams is bullshit. A lot of bullshit, Scott. I don't care who you are, don't criticize or question my loyalty to my team. I'm not a frontrunning, fairweather fan. I shit talk my teams when they're bad. yes. because i'm frustrated. Do you think managers that lash out about how bad their team's are playing don't have loyalty or aren't good managers because they do so?

Edit: i need to type faster because mikeford keeps taking my arguments. haha.
That's just what bothers me. Right there. But you're right, I shouldn't question your loyalty and I apologize, for real. I just noticed you did it multiple times, the first time was in joking and then the 2nd time (tonight) I was a few beers deep and made it extreme...it didn't help that I rewatched part of the Super Bowl earlier today. You have to understand WHY people will come to that conclusion based on the casual reader's (me) observations.

I understand why you come to those types of conclusions. All apologies accepted. And i think you may be speaking on my shit talking more about all the stuff I've said about Michigan State more than the tigers or whatever, so i hope you read why I didn't like Paul Davis and why I'm not stoked on this season for spartans hoops.
I have no problem with you questioning the way I am as a fan and my outbursts of frustration with teams/players doing poorly.

WHY WOULD YOU REWATCH THE SUPERBOWL? ahhhhhhh
jesus man, you must be a masochist of the highest order scott. id rather die than watch game 7 of the ALCS in 2003... pretty much the same deal here.

Could I possibly throw in an option D, myself. I'm guessing at this point I could likely pitch better than them, or at least hit better than them if in the National League.

I snapped way too hard at this, but at least understand my reasoning for it.
Wild Thing, you make my butt sting.
i knew were you coming from and i think mikeford put it perfectly ..if a tigers fan was flipping out at the rotation or jim leyland and not letting up, then everyone would jump on his ass and rightfully so.
todd jones though, lol, is completely open for criticism. him and bob wickman should have a duel, the winner being proclaimed "the oldest p.o.s closer in baseball".
