Which do you prefer?

Stacks seem to be a requirement for live performances, though I really enjoy combo amps

Combo amps are easier to have and to move.

Agreed, but stacks sound better.

You can't make a blanket statement like that about this stuff.

haha i know, i sing, so i don't actually use them...just listen.
But our guitarists have used both and stacks just have a fuller/bigger sound to me.

combo amps sound better..the sound can be tamed with a smaller amp...and as for larger shows, sound eng. prefer a small combo...everything gets micd and eq'd anyhow...but its all opinion..best thing about music.

They're smaller and are in one part. The heavier ones might require multiple people, but usually not.

the sound you can get with a low wattage tube amp is much better then a stack. the tubes breakup nice, and the speakers break up really very nice. that is if the amp is good. like a tiny terror or ac30.

I like the combo for travel but for sound stacks are my snacks.

I don't understand the whole "stacks sound better" argument. Sure, they're louder, but I wouldn't say they produce a better quality sound than a good combo amp.

They both can provide a great sound but stacks looks sexier.
I like both, but I'll take a stack over a combo amp because the kind of music I play requires high gain tube amplification, and while you can achieve that with an expensive as hell (and heavy as hell) combo amp... it's more convenient for me to just carry around a head to gigs that already provide cabinets for you (though sometimes the venues backline has crappy cabs).
And yeah, they look sexier... although I really think Vox combo amps look sexy as hell on stage too.

If you get nice 'class A' Combo, you really can't beat the sound. I spent many years in a band that used stacks and just recently started a band that uses a combo, and now I don't know why we ever used a stacks. One guitar player in my new band uses a combo and the other a big stack and the combo blows it out of the water even in volume!! Do some research and find that nice combo, you won't regret it!!...Although stacks do look sweet ;)

Like someone else said it's all personal opinion and that's the fun in it to me at least. Putting together your gear is honestly one of the most exciting/creative parts of being in a band to me (not talking about making the actual music) and it's fun to experiment. I voted stack but my friend plays a combo in our band and combined we sound amazing. So maybe the trick is to have one combo and one stack? I love gear.

I'm tossing up between an Orange Tiny Terror (stack over the combo version) and a Vox at the moment.
Think I'm leaning towards the Orange stack............
