I just want some new music that's dark or has a sombre atmosphere. Something like The Devil And God Are Raging Inside Me or North by Something Corporate. Something like Moving Mountain's Foreword EP or the entire Cursive discography.

Bradley Hathaway - A Mouth Full of Dust

I love this album, so I try to recommend it any chance I get, but based on what you said, I really think you'd like it.

Also, I should mention that there's a Recommendations Forum (http://www.absolutepunk.net/forumdisplay.php?f=115) for threads like this. It's really not that big of a deal, but they technically belong there. People seem to have been posting recommendation threads a lot in here as of late, though, so what the heck.

Ha, no problem. Like I said, people seem to post these here a lot. You're probably not the only one who didn't realize that.

I figured there was a better chance of someone else mentioning The National than Bradley Hathaway, and the bands he listed pointed more so towards A Mouth Full of Dust, at least in my mind. I definitely support the Boxer recommendation, though.

I wouldn't call it dark either, but I might call it "autumnal" or something. It's a little bit bleaker and more brokenhearted than their first record.

Okay. I just saw "dark or has a sombre atmosphere" and was surprised that your favorite album of the decade didn't pop into mind.

I guess I'm a horrible Boxer fan. :-d

Listen to Only Ashes.

Something corporate is not dark. They have one or two songs (Only Ashes, Break Myself maybe) that are "harder" than their other stuff which, if that's how you want to define a band, makes Say Anything electro-loveballadeers (crush'd anyone? :p) and Fall Out Boy acoustic. Otherwise they're rather introspective for a band that age. North is a great album, but "dark" is not a word I'd use to describe them, in fact if you describe them without using "uplifting" or "positive" you are doing them an injustice. "Watch The Sky", "Ruthless", "Space", (My personal favourite) "She Paints Me Blue", these are not the songs of a dark band.

Secondly, if you haven't listened to Jack's Mannequin yet then you are missing out on something major.

I get what you mean, but dark is what I'd call the music I want right now. I guess to make it broader you could call it more as depressing music.
And yeah I have Jack's Mannequin. Gotta say that Andrew McMahon is one hell of a frontman and songwriter.

do yourself a favor and listen to radiohead's Kid A. Hail To The Thief is another dark-sounding record of theirs but are you digging for silver, or gold?

I find bizzare irony that in a quest for dark music he'd be listening to an album on which the best song (IMO, obv) song is "Optimistic." There's something poetic about that.
