For a guy who's been out for over two months he looked darn good tonight. The Jays offseason is looking pretty darn good right now with all of their major aquisitions contributing significantly. The Jays will be challenging for the wildcard at least with Burnett, Halladay, Janssen and Ted Lilly leading the way. Thoughts?

if you're thinking ted lilly is leading the way to anything near a playoff spot you're mistaken. he's nothing but mediocre. on a good day.

He's a little too inconsistent for my liking but as a third or fourth starter I can tolerate it.

meh. is chacin hurt? i'd say they have a shot with a healthy, effective burnett, halladay and a healthy, effective chacin. but the bullpen still is going to blow it for them until they beef that up.

Chacin is out right now and he hasn't been as good as he was last year. We do need him back. Our bullpen's ok at the back end with B.J. Ryan shutting people down but the middle is a bit of mess.

"a bit of a mess" is a bit of an understatement.

he looked unstoppable tonight.

lilly has looked brilliant at times and absolutely terrible at other times.

janssen has gone in the tank, he's been awful his past 3 or 4 starts.

chacin, should be back in august and will hopefully be effective.

and other than ryan, the bullpen has been suspect at best.

the biggest disappointment is definitely towers.

i don't think they'll make it this year, but if they can shore up the bullpen in the offseason, they'll be looking pretty damn good pretty damn soon.

Seems nearly 100% of the teams currently in a playoff race need bullpen help though so the odds of the Jays picking anyone half decent up seems a little steep. Believe me I am hoping though and we do have some good bats that we could stand to give up.

I can hope though. Not to jinx him but Troy Glaus has been on the DL a bunch throughout his career but has avodied such a fate thus far.

Burnett has only started 3 or 4 games this year I believe. Maybe only 3. 2 since he's come off the dl a couple weeks ago though.

Haha. Josh Towers. Just got sent back down to Syracuse today in favor of Pete Walker coming off the injured list. That should say something. That and his 9.11 ERA and 1-9 record. My word what a waste of money he's turning out to be.

hey mike here's a question... behind Towers the front runner was looking like Jorge Sosa.

Now that he's (God help us) the Braves "closer" is he still eligible for the award, or was it only for starting pitchers?

haha oh man, i forgot he was being tried as the closer. I was watching the game in Tampa where he came in and like 1 guy got on and boom! two guys up in the pen immediately. I was like 'oh wow.'

And i pray to god that we don't trade zumaya for smoltz. I'd love for him to come back here, that's great. But not for Joel Zumaya. Take back Roman Colon and Zach Miner or something, if you'd like, i don't care. Just not Zumaya.

oh god I'm just thinking of the comfort having Zumaya would bring.

BTW Sosa as the closer: 1-0, 1 save. 0 ER, 1 hit in 3 IP

...I don't expect it to last but it looks good for now

yeah. hopefully, for the braves sake he holds up for this year and we don't give them zumaya.

I actually don't like us going out looking for another starter at all. I think a left handed bat would be a more pressing need, but that's just me.

You know what pisses me off now that I look back on it, with the exception of Smoltz, the Braves closers have always been SHIT during "The Run"

Ones that I can remember: Kerry Ligtenberg, Mark Wohlers, John Rocker. Last year alone was Dan Kolb, Chris Reitsma and Kyle Farnsworth

Jorge Sosa is very much still in the running. The award can definitely apply to closers. The only thing is though, if he fails at being the closer, he's gonna get moved from that role and just stuck in middle relief, where he probably won't get enough appearances to really rack up those L's or in the closer case, Blown Saves.

or the Braves will just have ANOTHER injury and he'll go back to the rotation.

it looked like mark wohlers would have been the closer for years to come until he just lost it.

wasn't Tim Spooneybarger one or was he just a reliever?

Spooney was a closer for a short while too. I actually think he was right around the same time as Ligtenberg.

hes on the marlins AAA team but hes VERY effective if you trade for him and use him out of the MLB pen.

Yeah the Tigers definitely have one of the best bullpens in baseball with Zumaya and Rodney but then there's Todd Jones who's bringing it down. That guy is horrible this year.

Haha another Burnett thread, oh no.

We'll need another quality starter before we can challange deep into the playoffs. Lilly, Chacin and Janssen are far too inconsistant. Most of their come because they get the offensive support (At least most of Chacin's wins, anyway). But at least when he gets back we'll have a good 1, 2, 3 pitcher lineup

wow, the front office really needs to get on the phones and get SOMEBODY to close games.

i'm sure rudy seanez is available!

No dude, we totally need to trade Todd Jones and someone else to them if we're going to go through with the John Smoltz deal (which is apparently still be discussed...). They can take back Roman Colon because i know Scheurholz didn't want to give him up in that trade for Farnsworth, so they can have him back if he wants. just please, take todd jones.

Todd Jones is hilariously bad this year. Him, Jorge Sosa, Ryan Dempster and Josh Towers are all on about the same level.

okay, i don't like todd jones but he isn't on the same level as sosa or towers. and dempster's bad because he is always in in non save situations, which is a bad thing for a closer.

The worst thing about Mr. Towers is that they just hooked him up with a 2 year deal after his decent year last season. Bet J.P. is regretting that now. His one dud of a move last offseason
