LMB: you're right, I think he should change the name. The Ataris was a good name for a punk band. By the time they got to So Long, Astoria, they'd left that punk rock sound for something different, and they need to get a new name to reflect that. Maybe The Kris Roe Project? Haha!
But I'm still trying to get into the unmastered copy of the album. There's a couple pretty good songs on it, but apart from that, I can't feel it still.
And LMB...I think I wasted about five minutes trying to read your damned sig. I want those five minutes back.

Who smells a lawsuit?
I get the feeling this album might be packaged similar to David Gilmour's "On an Island".

The Ataris were my favorite band ever in "Blue Skies Broken Hearts, Next 12 Exits" and "End is Forever" Those two albums are the reason I play music now. "So Long, Astoria" was an alright album with some quality tracks, (i.e. Summer of 79, In This Diary, All You Know Is All You Could Ever Learn or whatever the hell the name of that song is) But this leaves me in high skeptics. I mean Kris Roe wrote some of my favorite songs of highschool that still make me tingle now;
San Dimas Highschool Football Rules
Teenage Riot
Looking Back on Today
I Won't Spend Another Night Alone
Your Boyfriend Sucks
If You Really Want To Hear About It
Broken Promise Ring
Better Way
I.O.U. One Galaxy
My So Called Life
and so on and so forth...
This could be best album of the year, or biggest dissapointment ever. Kris...don't try to be something you aren't. You are the akward guy who writes cheesy songs about growing up and broken hearts...and you were on that Lucero documentary.

It seems there was this elephant who decided to get a part time job at a bakery* to save up to buy a toilet. When he showed up to the interview the manager asked the elephant what qualifications he had to work a part time job. As the elephant passionately laid out his extensive retail and patisserie experience, the manager interrupted him curtly exclaiming, "Wait-if you buy a toilet, and flush your business-- what will the poor dung beetles eat?" Just then the elephant straightened his tie and tossed this beauty of a zinger orally into the ether: "They shall eat your finest croissants," the elephant intoned, "And doubtless that they shan't taste the diff."
*you should know that this particular bakery is known for the unusual poor quality of its croissants

Yeah, the album artwork does resemble Takk's artwork a lot, but I still like it. I've been an Ataris fan since Blue Skies and have rolled with every change they've gone through since. Blue Skies was my favorite album for a long time. None of the successive albums came close to what it offered but I have to admit these new Ataris songs are my favorite they've ever offered. I guess the way I look at it is that The Ataris are the first band I've listened to that has evolved their sound at about the same time my musical tastes have evolved. When I was into Blue Skies, I was also into MxPx and Blink. Now I'm 7 years older and I'm listening to a lot more stuff like Mogwai, Mono, Explosions, Northern Chorus, etc... and the new Ataris stuff is more down that alley.
In short, the new Ataris album is going to blow a lot of people away. The band will probably lose fans who were expecting So Long Astoria, Part Deux but I think they'll gain some fans who have always written them off as nothing more than a pop-punk band.

i completely agree about the name change. they got their release from columbia so there is no reason to keep the name...other than to make $. this project is entirely different. furthermore, if he wants to shed the "so long, astoria" image, its the only way to go.

the people who are expecting more pop/rock'ish punk'ish stuff are going to be super dissapointed. this record is completely different than anything theyve ever done.
.. kris has been saying for a long time now that he had been playing music that he couldn't relate to. i think he's 27 or 28 now and songs like hey kid! were written when the guy was 15. i dont blame them for changing their style. i really dont see how anyone could resist evolving musically.
ive been a die hard ataris fan for 7 yrs and i love the new album .. even though i would always like to hear blue skies part II

wow
this is going to be a rant. Alot of the people on this board are so ignorant. Is it bad that a musician wants to evolve as one? isnt music art? Isnt art in some way/shape/or form supposed to be completly free of any sort of guidelines? You make it seem like he is not allowed by any means to do what he wants. Im pretty sure i wouldnt want to sing songs about high school relationships or sing "bitch bitch bitch..thats all you ever do" when im 28. Especially when you go through a divorce and nearly overdose on PCP. Keep in mind that his parents did go through a divorce and get back together. Go listen to the clip of "when everything else fails" on myspace. He already has a daughter from a failed relationship...not to mention think about him growing up with his parents having troubles in their relationship...only to grow up and have your own fail. Everyone crucifies every band on here if they change their sound because they want to do something different. Its as if there are some 10 commandments in the music world that say "thou shalt not alter thy sound from the first 3 albums...nor sell out"
I have been a fan of the ataris since i was a freshman in high school. Back to the mp3.com days. They were exactly the band i dreamed of and quickly became my favorite band with the entire Blue skys broken hearts cd. While they grew i grew musically. I personally have been impressed with kris roe and his songwriting ablities to grow and expand. While bands like NoFX still write crappy songs and will never grow as musicians IMO.
Im in love with the new cd. I think it has such a tone to it thats amazing. It creates a vibe that makes you think of a dark midwest night. And i say good for him for doing something he wants to do. And being proud of something musically.
For all the stuff he has gone through recently i think its the perfect album for the ataris. I just feel bad so many people dont get it or understand it.
I highly suggest though that all of you listen to this cd with an open mind when it comes out completly mastered. Dont hope that by pushing next track that "san dimas high school football rules" pt.2 is going to come on. Expand your ears. Give it a chance.
side note...kris has been obsessed with euro pop also for awhile...back to my bloody valentine days of the early 90's...im pretty sure he has no interest in trying to rip off the killers. hint my signature from the ataris "the hero dies in this one." And im done
What was said above, I'm not gonna quote the entire fucking thing like some might do (surprise: IT'S ANNOYING).
I'm not a fan of the Ataris, never have been really. I could give two shits if the last album sounded like pop punk and the new one sounded like a fucking Lionel Richie album. What bugs me about the Kris(topher!) Roe/Ataris situation is that Mr Roe himself said that this is not an Ataris record, the label is making me keep the name blah blah blah. Now let go from Columbia, tah-dah still keeping the name. Fuck, I'd shut the hell up if Kris Roe would say "I want more record sales because of the Ataris name slapped on the cover." Anyways, the album sucks to me, so does most of their discography.

hey i agree with you on that. Not going to lie. Its usually why bands do side projects so people dont get confused. But we havent really had an update on the situation since they left columbia. I believe the last update was said that thats the way it looked. But who knows if they are changing their nameor not. Im just waiting for a new update. However i respect your opinion by not liking the new cd. Unlike some people im not going to slam you for it. And i wasnt directing my rant towards you:)
you have good music taste so yeah

Although I doubt this'll happen, I will retract everything I've said if they change their name or if the band declares I WANT MONEY status (I respect those who have the balls to say they're a sell out).

Hahaaa, I think Jason needs to read that, he'll get a kick out of it. Hint: He very much dislikes the new stuff.
