i think it may vary depending on the network.

also, this may be a stupid question, but are different states stricter on their network censorship maybe?

This reminds me of when Panic! at the Disco's song was censored. They would censor the "God" part but not the "damn." Didn't make sense to me.

But in response, one is sacrilegious, one isn't.

Censorship is tricky. I know, with movies at least, it depends on whether the word is being used as a noun or a verb. Like the word "fuck" can be used as many times as you want if it's being used as a noun and still be PG-13 but if used as a verb a certain number of times, the rating is bumped up to R. Don't take my word for it and someone correct me if I'm wrong but I think that's how it works.

The MPAA has it's head up its ass and does whatever it wants with it's ratings. It doesn't matter if it's verbs or nouns.

Hm. I didn't know that. What I was told was that the word "fuck" can be used a maximum of two times in PG-13. It wasn't clear about the tense. But yet..."shit" can be said 62 times and not be bumped up to R. Strange.

That's just part of it. The Bible is pretty clear that God's name is holy and is not something that should be used haphazardly or flippantly (I can find you other verses to support this if you want). Saying "god dammit" isn't really revering God's name...

A lot of the things being censored aren't mandated by the FCC but are done by the individual networks to cover their own asses. Great example: "roulette" and "gun" being censored from the second verse of "Pokerface." There's nothing inherently offensive, crude, etc. about it but if some moron decides to give russian roulette a try, you can bet some shyster lawyer would be suing any station playing the song.

Networks self-regulate, the FCC just responds to complaints by viewers.

That's why FX is more lenient in allowing its shows to say the word "shit" as their audience is probably not going to take the time to phone the FCC about it.

EDIT: I can see why it would be offensive to some, but then you probably shouldn't be watching the type of programming that has those words in them if you don't like it.

They should censor none of it. But while that's not happening - they should at least respect the separation of church and state. The word "god" is not censored in blasphemous phrases such as "Oh my god" - but it is in "god damn" -- yet "damn" is not censored.

Was watching "Beerfest" not too long ago on Comedy Central. In the scene where Barry is introduced and he's a prostitute, it's censored when he says: "It's $10 for a [censored] J, $12 for an [censored] J, $15 for a [censored] J." They have to censor ZJ even if it's a made up sexual reference with no real meaning behind it. Ridiculous!

People need to start listening to George Carlin: the only censored words should be "shit", "piss", "fuck", "cunt", "cocksucker", "motherfucker" and "tits". Although the second and seventh are said all the time uncensored.

Also, pertaining to "Jesus": on a Family Guy commentary, Seth MacFarlane was saying how the network would let them use "Jesus" but not "Jesus Christ", unless the latter was specifically referring to the person. Hence the episode in which God shouts "Jesus Christ!" as an exclamation, and then the shot pans to Jesus saying "what?" Maybe that's a FOX rule, maybe it's across the board, maybe it's total bullshit. Who knows.

Finally, to address the "fuck" question...PG-13 movies can use it in a purely non-sexual manner. As soon as it refers to the sexual act, it's automatically rated R.

My knowledge of the use of "fuck" in a movie is very limited. In fact much is based on what I read when looking up the movie Accepted, in which they bleep out the second use of "fuck" in order to avoid getting a R rating.

Another thing to consider, why do old movies get to keep their out dated ratings? I recently saying Sixteen Candles which is rated PG, but contains the word "fuck" and "shit." Not that I'm complaining... it just seems counterproductive.

Censorship shouldn't exist. If we appease all those who are "offended" by words, the amount of censorship done would eventually lead us to resemble China.

I think TV has made some decent strides as far as censorship goes, just look at fx and Comedy Central. I think it's moving out of old traditions where words like 'shit' and 'goddamn' were considered bad. But honestly, I think limiting use of words like 'fuck' is better as far as creativity with dialogue goes for some shows. I don't think I've ever watched a show on NBC or something and thought 'That needed more f-bombs.' If I wanted that, I'd watch HBO or Showtime.

I think you can only say Fuck once in a PG-13 movie, and it cannot be a sexual reference.

I believe you can say it twice. I recall they allowed it twice in "As Good As It Gets," but the MPAA has crazy rationals for giving their ratings.

My knowledge of the use of "fuck" in a movie is very limited. In fact much is based on what I read when looking up the movie Accepted, in which they bleep out the second use of "fuck" in order to avoid getting a R rating.

I think going through the whole process again, even if they just tried for "Sixteen Candles," would lead to other movies needing to be re-rated and, therefore, be time-consuming and mostly a waste of time.
