Q: What got you in to emo/screamo?
A: For me, it was bands like Heroin, Angel Hair, and Antioch Arrow. I got in to alot of Gravity Record's back catalog ( good/cheap to mail. ). I got in to emo/screamo on purpose in 8th grade. I couldn't stand it when kids would toss around the word "emo" and they didn't know a damn thing about it. I just have a pure respect for this genre of music. How about you guys? What got you in to emo? Backstory?

I stubled upon Jimmy Eat World's Static Prevails in Borders one day back in late 1999, and that got me into bands like The Get Up Kids, Mineral, Braid, Cap 'n Jazz, Promise Ring, early Deep Elm records stuff, etc. Then I met this guy online who had similar tastes to me, and he introduced me to the 'harder' side of emo. It started with Saetia, the Off Minor/I Am The Resurrection 12", Neil Perry, Orchid, Portraits of Past, all the Gravity stuff, You and I, and then to all the second generation bands like Hot Cross etc. Then my interest in those bands helped me to discover more bands and the whole thing snowballed. I also read HeartattaCk zine a lot, and would find interesting stuff to check out in the reviews section. Nowadays I listen to a lot of pop stuff as well (hence how I came to this site), espescially since the scene is kind of slow now, but emo and the abovelisted bands are still my first love.

i had known about emo before then, but I didn't really like it until it was live.

Although Circle Takes The Square are amazing, I have never seen them live.

I always wanted to order a few back issues. Is it worth checking out?

Absolutely. Awesome articles/columns/reviews, and very community minded. They have a couple of issues where they interview Funeral Diner, which are good ones. I'd definately recommend picking it up. Unfortunately the next issue of the zine will be their last :(

Last issue? That's a bummer. I'm definately going to have to pick it up then.

I went backwards from Fugazi until I got to Embrace and such. From there I poked around that scene until I found the harder stuff.

That's cool but we're talking about stuff closer to the 'original' emo. Not trying to be a dick or anything because that stuff's good too.

well when I was a little younger I had a pretty bad experience and I was into writing songs at the time, so I wrote a song about it. then my friend read it and she was obbsessed with that kind of music, so she made me listen to this song that kinda sounded similar to the lyrics I wrote. At first I really only liked that kind of music for the lyrics, but now I love the tune, too.

i dont know how i first got into it. probably because i started up a band with a friend and we both were into a lot of punk, that just sort of led into emo.

I'll check it when I get home. I get the feeling that if I let soul seek run for too long it begins to run incorrectly.

The more I listen to this music, the worse other bands from other genres begin to sound.
Went to a small-town local show in tenth grade with like four pseudo-screamo and metalcore-ish bands and got into emotional/hard/screamy music. Explored online and traded music with a tight-knit group of friends from there. Not much of a story, but that's how.

I lurv emo!! I even have Emo Glasses!! Well, I have the stereotype of emo as "The cutter" and "suicidal". (forgive my spelling). I mean most people I know cut, but if you ever met them they are some of the best people I know!
for me, i think it was the elitest attitude that comes with being an emo fan. one time, i saw this guy spout off a long list of obscure emo bands like he thought he was cool. at that point, i knew why i was alive.

i always hated the "pussy emo" of course i never actually knew any kids that were "pussy emo". i transitioned from my obsession with green day to bands like senses fail, etc, right around when i started going through alot of depression. i listened to green day simply cuz it sounded cool. then i actually started paying atention to lyrics, and i realized that my life was completely different from billy joes. my best friend got me into senses fail, and from there i got into lots of other bands. i i liked lots of bands like bayside because i could relate to them. i stopped hating emo.
i was going through like depressions and shit. then all of a sudden people start calling me emo and sensitive and w.e the fuck. then i found out i had mono, which caused most of my recent anxiety. now after my best friend moves and i break up with my most recent girlfriend, ironically im like happy. ive learned that nothing is with you forever, nothing exept music. thats beacuse music is more than just noise, its an idea and an ideal, and it can be with you forever, whoever the fuck you are, and will never leave you, unlike people.
so anyway, for the first time in my life, i now have alot of self-confidence. and as for the music, i listen to tons of stuff from bayside, silverstein, and aiden to chiodos, saosin, and circa survive, to atreyu, story of the year, and a7x. im self-taught 2 years playing guitar, been through bands, played shows, yea so.... its raining outside...

i got into screamo in like, 6th grade. my older brother saw saetia, bought their LP, so i had listened to it and then yeah, it all went downhill from there. i wish he had brought me to the show with him.
