I'm so sorry. I lived in Jacksonville, about an hour north, for six years. A piece of advice for you: do not go to fucking J-ville.
Wilmington is fun, downtown is fun, beaches are awesome (I love Wrightsville and Carolina Beach). Don't know much about venues. Up in Snead's Ferry, there is the shrimp fest. That's pretty rad and yummy.
Wilmington is essentially Florida in Eastern Carolina. Lot of retired people.

Up-and-coming bands play at The Soapox (www.TheSoapboxLive.com), for more mature and sophisticated fare there's Thalian Hall (www.ThalianHall.com), acoustic music is at Folks Cafe on Market Street. One of the best spots in all the state is Greenfield Amphitheater. A lot of people love Hell's Kitchen on Princess Street (www.hellskitchenbar.com) (http://www.hellskitchenbar.com%29). I'm sure there are others if you Google and stuff. I haven't been down that way since graduate school. Amazing town though. Truly something special. Enjoy yourself.
What's the job, if I may ask?

Wilmington is a pretty fun place in NC to live (i'm in Raleigh). There are lots of students around because of UNC-W and because the housing market got hit really badly there there's a ton of great houses for pretty cheap if you're thinking about buying a home. Congratulations on the job. I think you'll like Wilmington, it's a pretty cool place to be.

Welcome to the NC then, buddy :). I'm from Raleigh too, but Wilmington's a charming place, especially if you fancy the coast.

Wilmington is a pretty place, but I've never explored anything but the beach. Sorry.

Don't listen to what anyone has said if they said Wilmington is bad...its awesome...you have to get a place in a good location though...you can get a place in a college area like UNCW or there are plenty of young executive/golf course type condo complexes...but like it was said above, the Soapbox always has great shows, it is right downtown, and I think the Swellers/This Providence/Set Your Goals/Farewell are there in a couple weeks...the best bars downtown are probably Level 5 and Goodfellas (kinda depends on what you're into, there's plenty of dance clubs if that is your thing) and then definitely go to Wrightsville Beach as much as you can (live there if possible) and there's good restaurants and bars there like 22 North, Loggerheads, etc.
I would definitely be stoked to be in your position...I'm from Raleigh and am in the military now in VA...but I'd give anything to be down in Wilmington, it is a great time.

Wilmington really is the gem of Eastern Carolina. Beach life (and life south of the Mason-Dixon, really) just isn't for me hence my negativity. My aunt lives in the historic neighborhood near downtown and she loves it there.

RAD FEST
Yeah, look it up. It's in May. Maybe we'll see each other.
Also, welcome to the Carolinas, sweetheart.
Wilmington bars are a blast

i definitely second most of what corgkowznor said. soapbox is a fun venue with a variety of different bands playing all the time. other spots in the downtown (16 taps, the whiskey, reel cafe) always has decent local music. there's a good club scene if youre into under 21 crowd. a few places such as Level 5 and Goodfellas that have an adult crowd, but still dance music. Shameless plug, i work at goodfellas. we have a 3rd floor sports bar/alt rock spot and a 2nd floor club atmosphere.
wrightsville beach bars are also fun. just a bit of a hassle getting down there.
big enough city with chain restaurants and all but lots of local stuff going on that makes it feel smaller than it is.
