Anyone know of any good thrash bands or any bands that would give me an idea of what a thrash band is? The reason I ask is that this guy I like and have been hanging out with for a bit just put a thrash band together and he and his band mates are going to be having shows pretty soon, so I'll be going and want to know what I'm going to be in for in case I don't get to see the band practice before going to a show.
He also said that they play 'dreamy' music as well, not sure what that means, but he described it as being on the best trip you've ever had lol.
I know he likes The Devil Wears Prada and I listened to one of their cds and wondered how I was gonna make it through that. Don't get me wrong, I do like screaming in music but not where it constitutes most of the disc.
Any help would be appreciated =)

The Devil Wears Prada is metalcore, not thrash. You'll get some heat for that, just so you know.
The "Big Four" of thrash metal are Metallica, Megadeth, Slayer, and Anthrax, so I assume that'd be a good place to start. Metallica is the only one of those bands I regularly listen to myself; Ride the Lightning and Master of Puppets are my favorite albums of theirs. When Todd sees this, he'll probably bring up Slayer's album Reign in Blood. I didn't say anything there that can't be read on Wikipedia, but it's better than nothing.
I have no idea what he means by "dreamy," but in the context of heavy music, probably worth checking out the shoegaze genre. Loveless by My Bloody Valentine is the most obvious example of that.

So, thrash metalgaze, huh?
Check out the older thrash bands as above, and something more contemporary like Municipal Waste or 3 Inches of Blood.
As for heavy 'dreamy' music, Jesu, Nadja or Tombs should do the trick, though neither are particularly fast.

Thanks for the rec's-I have no idea what thrash metalgaze is-all I know is that he said it's a thrash band but he said that some of their songs are 'dreamy like the best trip you've ever had' (and not like a vacation trip--like a trip from a high--lol).
But thank you again for your help! =)

This is how bad I am at classifying music, but thank you for letting me know that--I don't want to lose my street cred lol

The only Metallica songs that I know are the 'mainstream' ones, but I'll def. check those other bands out.

I'll check this out too.
Thanks for the rec's!! =)

Thanks for the input- I myself have no idea of what a thrash band is, I listen to a lot of music but thrash is def. not one of them from my understanding...

In addition to the aforementioned obligatory "big 4" also be sure to check out Overkill and Exodus, who also helped to shape the genre. Testament is another good one. Lazarus AD is an awesome new band that throws back to the glory days.
