View Full Version : Remember Me (Allen Coulter, 2010)

Can't believe I'm saying this, but this movie (starring Robert Pattinson) doesn't look half bad. Directed by Allen Coulter (Hollywoodland, The Sopranos) and written by Jenny Lumet (Rachel Getting Married):

Looks alright. Seems like a step up from the rest of his movies. I'll give it a watch whenever it comes around.

At first I thought the film was credited to Anne Coulter. That would be a sign of the apocalypse for sure.

One review i saw said he is looking out the window, and then you see the plane coming from his perspective (inside the building).
But the review in this thread says that he goes into the building to visit his father, i guess of whom he has a new found relationship with..then a wide shot reveals outside of the building with him looking out. Then during the credits, or just before the credits, there is some slo mo panic going on and then mourning. Either way, i want to see the damn ending because that is just so wrong.

What I don't understand is how someone could write that script with that ending and find anyone willing to go anywhere near it, let alone make the movie(and with some pretty big names). You'd figure someone would say "no, this is a very bad idea".

Just got back from seeing this and Green Zone. Have to say this was a lot better than I figured it would end up, and I was actually looking forward to seeing it.
The ending will divide people but it's really easy to dismiss an ending when you know it, and don't bother seeing the film. Watching the movie and getting involved with the characters gives the ending a little something and they didn't continually hint at the ending throughout the film. I just builds up in final minutes when you realize what is about to happen. Considering what it is, I thought they handled it well.
I dug the hell out of this movie.

Because I know what the premise of the film is and how they end it? I don't need to see it to know that a teenage romance drama doesn't need to have THAT serve as its conclusion; it's a cheap, pathetic and lazy way to extract emotion from the audience.

Since the tragedy they used is so recent and fresh, it's difficult to come up with a hypothetical comparison on the same level, but here it goes...
I'm going to write a screenplay about a dysfunctional Japanese family coming together and make zero reference to the time period they live in. And as soon as the final act is coming to a close and they've bonded and are closer than ever before, an Atomic bomb and mushroom cloud engulf their house as they're enjoying dinner.
If you can't figure out what is wrong with that method, then I don't know what else to say.

That isn't how it's done in this film though. You know it's 2001 from the very beginning. And the ending fits with the overall message of the film. But of course you haven't seen it, so you wouldn't know.

The first scene says 1991, and then the second scene says ten years later. I think a lot of people just don't pay attention.

Finally saw it and I ended up laughing/crying at the end. Everyone totally bought the stupid ending and were bawling in the theatre. I tend to cry when someone else does but I found the ending so retarded so I was cracking up at the same time. Either way Rob still looked hot as hell, so who cares.

Just got back from this movie and I really enjoyed it. My friend and I cannot stand Robert Pattinson due to the Twilight craze, but we went into the theater with no idea what the whole movie was about. I heard about the 9/11 reference, but I didn't look too much into it. I don't know how many girls on here saw this movie, but was crying within the first two minutes. The whole movie was extremely emotional, then after the Labor Day scene I knew something was going to happen. Overall, I'd say it was a good movie, I think a lot of people are judging it based off of what they heard, but I would definitely watch it first before making any comments about it. You might be impressed.

Was laughing along with everybody in the first few pages until I saw it. It was actually extremely entertaining and enjoyable. I'm not trying to say it was a triumph in film making or anything of the sort, but way better than one would expect.
The ending really isn't as tacky as was described in some of the spoiler reports. I preferred it to the happy-go-lucky ending I would expect from a movie of this nature. I don't think it was exploiting or trying to open old wounds. The plot revolves around smaller tragedies in his life which get tied up at the end by a much larger tragedy. It's not like it was butterflies and rainbows and they dropped the bomb out of nowhere.
Anyways, can totally understand some people's distaste for it, but I liked it MUCH more then I would've expected.

just watched this.
i think in the context of this film using 9/11 as a plot device is just lazy. There are plenty of other ways to get your point across (they showed us with all the daddy issues over and over)
the problem wiht the ending is that it doesnt make us sad about the characters and what will happen to them. it makes us sad for the people who really lost loved ones that morning. Using those feelings in order to make us feel for characters you did a pretty bad job creating is just bad form
but the newsweek article makes a good point about the younger generation as this imdb poster puts it
"On a side note, I actually saw Remember Me in New York whilst on holiday in March this year with my daughter (who was only 6 years old when 9/11 took place). I also saw it when I got back to the UK (where it did extremely well at the box office for such a small budget film). My daughter had obviously heard about 9/11 but I think that watching the film made it easier for her to understand the personal nature of the tragedy. "

I actually think this ending was ok... I didn't find it too offensive because you never see the actual impact or the building even on fire... the worst you see is debris... I think it does re-hash that day and throws it in your face with characters you got attached to during the movie, so it kinda gives 'tweens' the experience everyone else felt that day. Like that newsweek article says, it makes it more real than something in a text book.
