I'll see it. I like that Smith is trying to branch out into projects other than the View Askewnaverse.
Will also see it, yes this is what was previously known as "A Couple Of Dicks".
I wonder when that $30/$50 million dollar space movie he's making will come out.

Kevin Smith explains why the title was changed. In short, if it stayed "A Couple of Dicks", TV networks wouldn't advertise before 9pm. That and he learned his lesson with Zack and Miri Make a Porno in that the title alone can affect the movie's advertising.

I think Tracy Morgan can be funny at times. But in this movie it almost looks like something his character would play in 30 Rock. The trailer did nothing for me, it just seemed like they were pushing to hard for it to be funny i.e. Tracy Morgan saying "No!" over and over again

if anything, this looks like another big step forward visually for the guy. i'll see it because i'm a fan of his and i'm very interested to see him tackle a big movie with some action in it, which is something he's avoided because of his laziness. but there's no denying he's doing this just for the money and experience.

He had nothing to do with changing the title from A Couple of Dicks, so the 'learning his lesson' thing is inaccurate, but yeah, the part about the tv stations sucks.

i understand. but just because he didn't write it, him being the director does give him a pretty big say in what happens with it no? i mean besides the studio who finance the thing of course.
deadkidsean
12/24/09, 07:36 PM
I'd think so, but I think he pretty much stayed away from it. From the Smodcast where he talked about the title, he just kept saying, "It's not my movie," over and over. Without it being his movie from top to bottom, including the studio (Harvey/Bob let him have 100% control over everything he has ever done with them), I think he just kept his hands off the title situation.
Via @Coyote_Rose (https://twitter.com/Coyote_Rose) "Wait a minute, it's your movie and you can't even announce the title." Not MY movie; a movie I was hired to direct.

He is not the type of cat to take a job that he doesn't give a fuck about. Now, did he take it partially for the money? Likely. That, and he had 'The Itch' to get back into the seat while Mos is pursuing his directorial debut. But I have listened to enough hundreds of hours of him talking to know that he would not take a job that he didn't give a shit about.
As for Z&M, it was his highest grossing movie. It was a disappointment to him based on the numbers he was given that were projected early on, but overall, it was a good critical and financial success. He is not hurting in any way.

i'll do this in bullet points cause i'm drunk:
-i've listened to tons of interviews and Q and A's of him discussing film and everything else, and he very much seems like a guy that in his downtime would take a project just for some cash and the work. saying "he doesn't give a fuck about it" might be a bit strong, but i don't think he's putting THAT much effort into it. he's a very honest guy and holds nothing back when it comes to money and doing something just for the hell of it. he loves bruce willis, and given the opportunity to direct a film with him i think he would do it no matter what
-as for zak and miri, it may have been his highest grossing film but i still don't think he saw much of a profit to his personal bank account because of it. i don't think he's as well off as some may just assume, and i don't think it's out of the question for him to take on this project just for some dough and easy work so he can relax and not have as much stress while he finishes up some touches on red state or whatever else he has in his head and that hockey flick.
also, have you (or anyone else) heard anything about him and bruce having problems on the set? i saw someone mention it on another board, and i know he told a long bruce story on Evening 3 and while he adores him because he's an icon he makes it seem like he's a very difficult person to work with.

Walt runs it lol but I'd shit if I saw Mos there. I like him more than KS on Smod (although both rule). The episodes with Bryan and Walt are some of the funniest in Smod history, too, bc those 3 guys have been friends for so damn long.

it had a lot of laughs when i first watched it, but anything will make a stoned 18 year old giggle. besides a couple of parts it hasn't held up well at all. the acting is atrocious and the dialogue is unusually awkward and forced. i thought zak and miri was a fantastic rebound though and showed he still had the chops and could make a movie with heart that was funny and still felt honest.

actually when i think of people who think clerks 2 is hysterical i think of paul blart fans. broad, lowest common denominator humor except for a couple nerd jokes about the trilogies that were already tired in the first place because they were a part of his act for years leading up to the movie.
i was saying it's certainly not the best work on his resume that he has made, I think it's probably the worst by a long a shot. But obviously that 25 year old from Baltimore that still giggles at vagina and lord of the rings jokes while probably listening to Trapped Under Ice can't comprehend.

i have a hard time sitting through that too. not because it's necessarily bad, i mean it's fine for what it is and what little he had to work with. but it's just so dated and i get bored very quickly with it. chasing amy, mallrats, and zak and miri are his gems.
you are right it is dated but i can actually watch that one straight through unlike Clerks II

It was a black list script so I don't see how it could be that bad, still will probably wait and watch it on HBO in a year and a half
Clearly you haven't read "Prisoners." Fact of the matter is most of the scripts on the black-list are mediocre at best. Producers like them because they're MONEYMAKERS, not good scripts.

I can't read scripts personally since I like things catching me off guard when I first watch a movie
that makes sense though, thanks for informing me

Yup. Prisoners sounded like it might be an interesting premise, so I read it. HUGE mistake. Fucking terrible, with an awful "twist." But what do you know? DICAPRIO of all people has signed on to star. Let's just say he seems about twenty years to young for the role, and that's the least of the problems.

I figured this...Tracy is so hilarious. I want to see Shutter and Crazies too though so I'm not sure where to take it

Yeah, I agree with this statement. It seems like all the critics who hated this movie say they hated it because it had Tracy Morgan in it.

movie ruled. Tracy Morgan was amazing, as was SWS and even Adam Brody played his role well. Sean William Scott stole the show for me though.

Movie was terribly written and directed. Smith shouldn't go near these types of movies, but Tracy was so great.

Not bad. Beat out The Crazies and was behind Shutter Island.
Gonna try and see this one next week.

With the right setting, I think he can be great. 30 Rock is an example.

I don't like 30 Rock, so I can't really agree. I liked him on SNL is years passed but it may have been my own immaturity that found that funny.

This wasn't very good. It's not a terrible movie, but it's not that funny, either. I wanted to like it, and it was certainly watchable, but nothing really made me laugh out loud.
It could've been a lot better, which is kind of funny considering that when I first heard about it, I thought it sounded stupid with potential to be really funny. In reality, it was a pretty fun premise that just didn't deliver in terms of humor. Either way, this thing is going to be all over network tv in 2.5 years.

Movie was pretty fucking bad. Script was AWFUL. Actors sold some of the unfunny jokes and Kevin Smith kept this from being a disaster, but there were as many BAD moments as laughs.

well yeah, in no way was this a good movie, but I still laughed my ass off in the theaters. Tracy Morgan can make the most mundane lines seem funny because of the way he talks/his delivery.

*Pretty fucking average, I should have said. I really like Morgan, but he's such a limited actor. The scene in their bosses office (bear with me, saw it in theaters months ago) when I was still wearing the chicken suit or whatever and they were suspended...I was hurt by his acting, haha. It was kind of embarrassing. That's not his thing, though.

Finally watched this tonight. I really wanted to love it, but the script wasn't there. There were definitely some funny parts, but I was expecting more because I love the cast and am a big Smith fan. I'm going to give it another watch in a couple days and hopefully I like it more on second viewing. Maybe I just wasn't in the mood for it tonight.

From what I heard, Smith wasn't that big of a fan of the script either. He actually had the actors improv, which is new for him.
