Awesome player, just didn't like against Sweden and Finland how he did that twice. He claimed "it was a reflex/reaction" but still.
It's also pretty fucked [to me] is that kids my age and a year younger are in this tournament now. Remember looking up to Luongo/Auld and junk when they played 8-10 years ago.
Go Red and White, Latvia!
it's more maroon, isn't it?
i'm rooting for the u.s. and am sort of optimistic that we'll have a good showing. i really just want someone other than canada to win, although that looks very unlikely.

Same here man. What's even crazier is seeing people i knew in high school and even elementary school play in it. It's weird to just think about it. I love watching the tournament though, been a tradition since i was real young. The best is watching players play there then 2 years later they're dominating the NHL.

On paper Sweden is just as good as, if not better, than Canada.
But I realize that's been said pre-tournament the last two years and Canada won the gold medal game the last two seasons against them, but Sweden has an unbelievably good team.
Though it would be scary to think how insanely Canada would dominate if they had all their eligible players--Sweden is only short two.

I feel bad for Latvia but not for other countries who get destroyed. Because of politics many of them refuse to play their much more skilled CHL players. The Czechs and Swedes mainly.
what do you mean "because of politics"?

Countries like to choose players who they have developed [i.e. Hockey Canada has a bias against NCAA players].
hm. that seems kind of dumb for a country like latvia to not choose players for their team because they might play in the chl or wherever, as i'd think they'd probably want their best players available due to their smaller talent pool?
StuGrimson
12/28/09, 06:32 AM
It has nothing to do with Latvia Im sure anyone who owns skates would be picked for that team. There are no Latvians playing in North America. Its the Czechs and Swedes who make players sign contracts stating they will not come to North America to play junior/ncaa or else they will not be picked for future international competitions
that makes a bit more sense then.

I wouldnt call it a bias when most of the players choose to go to the CHL which honestly is a far better outlet if you want to make it, better hockey as well. Not saying good players dont come out of NCAA but look at the draft history as well as the skill level in the players. I also noticed USA sorta change routes as they have something like 9 CHL players on their roster this year, usually see alot more NCAA players.

And there's the bias at work. Don't get me wrong, the US has the same thing where it's easier to make the national team if you go through the Development Program but at least I can admit it. I don't think there's a big difference in any development method at this age [and this is looking at the draft history over the past decade], but when you get high and mighty over other countries doing something you are doing, then be prepared to take some heat back.

Not really, but if it works take it because it helps out the two people making money [Hockey Canada and the CHL] and not the Joe Colbornes of the world. Personally I just want USA Hockey to get away from the Development Program since it hasn't been doing the job it's set up to do and am happy to see more people head to the USHL and turn down the program.

Its weird how well Slovakia play yet they still lose like 7-3 and 8-2. But like watching them i see them throwing huge hits and making great plays yet somehow they just keep letting in goals, its weird. They are a good team, i guess maybe their defense sucks. On another note Canada played well on the offense tonight but got sloppy too many times and took too many stupid penalties, coach wont be too happy with the penalties and some of the team play but good thing the individuals were showing and Taylor Hall finally gets going with all the hype around him. Game vs USA will be good.
usa beats latvia 12-1. i love how the crowd is always cheering for whoever plays the americans. i feel like if we did this to a canadian team playing in the u.s., there'd be a bit more complaining coming from their side. canada-u.s. should be really good.

To come to the realization that you are as old/older then some of the players on the team seems crazy to me. Just look specifically at one of the teams I played against. The Markham Waxers Minor Midget AAA team was fucking mindblowing. Their powerplay featured:
Alex Pietrangelo
Micheal Del Zotto
Steven Stamkos
Cody Hodgson

Alot is nowhere to be found on Canada tonight. No speed, no defense, no powerplay, no finish and no Taylor Hall. Last year when Canada was down to the US, Tavares went to work, got a hat trick and proved why he was the #1 draft prospect. Taylor Hall is giving pucks away like it's a charity. Im hoping for a renewed 3rd period hahaha

Not enough prospect development. They haven't turned out a really solid player in a long time and a lot of the Swiss players end up being draft busts because they either can't adapt to a North American style of play or can't handle the pressure of the NHL, who knows. Michael Riesen is probably the best junior player to ever come out of that country and ask Pat what happened to him. David Aebischer started his NHL career with a bang and then played himself out of the league by age 25, and at the men's level they still rely on Canadian and American ex-pats to field a team at World Championships and Olympics.
They seem to be turning a bit of a corner with how good guys like Caputi, Cunti, and Sbisa have been(though Sbisa's been sent back to juniors the last two years after being a top-15 draft pick and Caputi/Cunti are still NHL 4th liners at best), but they've still yet to turn out a real blue-chip prospect outside Mark Streit(who took an awful long time to develop) and Aebischer's 4 good years(maybe Niederreiter?) and until they start doing that with a little more frequency they won't crack the elite hockey nations. They'll need a much stronger development program and more ice sheets before that happens.

the country has the passion for the sport, and now i think they're taking the next steps to turning that passion into development of elite players and ability to compete consistently against the bigger nations. 10-15 years ago they were nowhere near where they are now. it's still a work in progress, but i think they're making great strides and in the next couple of years, maybe 10, they'll have a breakthrough. i'm not saying they'll be the equal of a team like finland or the czech republic in terms of quantity of talent, but more like slovakia, who on their day can take on any team in the world and should not be underestimated.

Things are tough to predict ten years from now, but they still haven't produced a forward that's played more than 27 NHL games and outside the big 3 of Hiller, Aebischer, and Streit, the number of NHL games played by Swiss players is extremely low.
Until they start producing prospects at a much greater level they won't be able to compete. You have to remember Slovakia still produces one hell of a line-up. They might be shallow on depth(once you get outside their main team it gets thin real quick), but they've still produced some unbelievable players in the last 10-15 years.
And passion doesn't necessarily equal results. Latvia probably has the most passion for hockey outside of Canada but that still hasn't translated into bonafide NHL prospects outside Ozolinsh, Irbe, and now(maybe) Bartulis.

that's true, but latvia is also a country of only 2 million or so. switzerland has a decent population, lots of money, and the will to strive to do better in hockey. latvia can only do so much with the resources they've got, but i feel like switzerland will be able to sooner or later translate the components they need to produce better players. i understand what you're saying about them, that they haven't produced that much talent yet and what they need to do in order to compete, and i think that they'll be able to do both those things in the next couple of years. but we'll see. if anything, another strong nation in hockey will be good for the sport.

Yeah, they said that Canada has never had a cheer like other countries have(they used the US with "U-S-A!" and Australia's "Aussie Aussie Aussie" as examples) and that we should come up with one.
They had a national contest, somehow that piece of shit won. They've hired "professional fans"(I can't make this up) to try and spread the chant at the games at the WJC, and the chant is not at all spreading. "Go Canada Go" and "Let's Go Canada *clap clap clap clap clap*" have been dominating, which were two chants that seemed to be working before.
And I agree Pat, Eberle is just unbelievably legit to me. The guy has so much instinct around the net it's unbelievable.

I disagree but i will say this is the first time i'm not confident in Canada's team going into the final and especially now that we lost Hamonic and have to switch lines up a whole lot because of it. However, their win against the US was 100% earned and deserved, its hard to make a comeback like that. And today's game wasn't that bad. Switzerland gave them a good fight in the first 2 periods and it was good to see Hall show up and them play better as a team.
RickRoll
01/03/10, 07:02 PM
Yeah, Canada got very lucky to beat the States and didn't play especially well today either. They have spurts of excellent play but lack the consistency that's been the junior team's hallmark over the last number of years.
Unless they peak late and finally play a full 60 in the gold medal game they're going to need some magic to pull it out. I think Hamonic has been right up there with Pietrangelo and Eberle as best player and if he can't go in the gold medal game that's going to be a huge loss.

Bob McKenzie's reporting Hamonic's done for the tourney with a separated shoulder. Awful, awful news. That was a terrible hit and I won't forgive Switzerland for a while for that one.
And I have to something I seldom do and agree with Pierre McGuire--there's no way Hamonic should've been on the ice at that point. Jared Cowen hadn't played all game, put him out there.
