Ha. Ha. Ha. Oh my god, it's that song. The Brand New thread argued over those lyrics for days.

the "i see what u did there" decoder says this of times when one requests "feminist songs"

"pick one of the most sexist (metaphorical, allegorical, or direct) songs you can think of off-hand"

latterman, tilt, discount, the coathangers (http://www.myspace.com/fuckthecoathangers), (kinda, maybe) the two funerals (http://www.myspace.com/thetwofunerals), (kinda, maybe, sorta) laura stevenson and the cans (http://www.quoteunquoterecords.com/qur019.htm)

that's all i can think of right now.

SickOfStars

most punk and left wing music of late has had feminist/egalitarian ideals.

the concept of music purely as "feminist" especially in the "just fa the ladies" sense is getting a bit antequated, especially in 'punk' circles. Of course, Brokencyde and the like are making that less of a reality, but *le sigh*

I can, however, say: listen to both The Two Funerals and Laura Stevenson and the Cans

Whether or not I'm an asshole or if I should continue to take that as a compliment is quite debatable.

No, I wasn't calling you an asshole, I was calling Americans arrogant pricks; and you are but a prime example of this.

no, you took my CORRECT statement to be pompous. I couldn't pick up on it because it was indirect.

ALSO, judging by this you're obviously the arrogant prick here:

You must be a real asshole if you're from Canada and are STILL a pompous dick.

haha shut the fuck up, seriously

you dont think its just as arrogant of you to call out 300 million people youve never met, on the presumptuous basis of the public image of our previous politicians (especially the last president), and how badly that skewed the entire country in the international eye? whether you want to believe it or not thats where your mongoloid opinion comes from and it makes you nothing more than a pretentious sheep to your media.

Not that I'm taking this anti-American propaganda stuff heavily, but the Bush administration isn't necessarily the biggest reason why the US has such a dubious reputation around the world and it certainly didn't start the proliferation of anti-American sentiment across other parts of the globe.

I agree that a lot of bullshit featured on this website are somewhat down on women, mostly because they're straight males writing breakup songs. Obviously that applies to actual "earnest" bands and not the cadre of sexist bullshit such as Brokencyde and "Kill My Valentine in 3D" or whatever other goofy examples are out there.

I just think feminist might not be the word you're looking for.

Feminism has come to be a more broad egalitarian idea disregarding the idea of gender roles and patriarchal society. Feminism itself is a little misleadingly titled because it's kind of a giant umbrella saying "straight, gay, lesbian, transgender, etc, etc" are all okay and there is no difference in worth whatsoever."

If you're looking for bands that support this idea then you'll find that a lot of bands are, at least on some level, within that spectrum of thinking. It doesn't often seep into their songwriting, but it's there. A good song that actually depicts these ideas and their effect on the music scene is Polar Bear Club's "Our Ballads" off their LP "Sometimes Things Just Disappear"

If you're looking for simple pro-feminine bands, you are probably going to have to step back a few years because the philosophy has kind of jumped a little bit in a different direction. I would say that Riot Grrl stuff would be the place to start, but you already said you weren't digging on that stuff. An acoustic band partially tied to that scene called Tattle Tale are exceptional and I would reccommend them, though.

I wasn't trying to get down on your search, I just don't think what you were actually looking for in the music was clear. Sorry if it seemed offensive/negative. :-)

PS: Yeah, nationalism isn't really a debate that belongs in the thread.
