So I was wondering if there was anymore die hard At the Drive-In fans out there, I know there is, but if there is on this site. I first heard them just the last year and it totally got me hooked. First song I heard was Quarantined and oh man did I love it. My band is totally influenced by them and their jsut phenominal, best true punk band out there in my opinion. So what are your views?

Relationship of Command is probably my top 1 album of 2000-2009. I love every bit of it.

In the way where you have to wade through ten minutes of worthless noise and musical masturbation for the momentary nuggets of genius. I like them too, but they are infuriating.

This band changed my life forever. They are the reason I listen to the music I do today...Funny story, Me and a couple friends went to go see The Mars Volta in Columbus, OH but the show was canceled. We ended up drinking in our hotel bar, which happened to be the same hotel the band was staying in. Omar bought me and my friends drinks and I asked him about ATDI. He said he looked at ATDI like you would a bad haircut in high school. I had to defend what a great band ATDI was to Omar of all people. A small piece of me died that day.

I was at that Columbus show. Real fucking awful that it was cancelled twice. The concert was awesome when it happened though.
But anyways, I love me done ATDI.
Vaya > ROC > I/C/O > AT > El Gran Orgo.
I like Sparta a lot too. They are underrated and unfairly maligned.

Getting copies of In/Casino/Out and Acrobatic Tenement around early '06 were part of the music that helped "expand" my interests simply beyond scene music. They're rad, as are The Mars Volta.

12/27/09, 03:24 PM
oh. i was confused because that could be read as "dude saw them on tv, so he's right".
i never saw them but i had a video from when they played in chicago that was a lot more subdued. i read that when they wanted to be, they could be the best live band but if they didn't care, then they sucked.

Ok. You enjoy 4 minutes of crickets chirping at the beginning of "Miranda That Ghost." Meanwhile, I'll fast forward, enjoy the actual music at the end of the song and use the extra four minutes to listen to a band who is less in love with every noise their guitars make. But then again, I don't like art.

I've seen Volta twice. They played three consecutive shows in Detroit two winters ago. I saw the final two. The first performance was fantastic - truly a night of unyielding, frenetic chaos and absurdly entertaining musicianship. The last night, Cedric was belligerent and far from lucid, often stumbling and chastising the audience for reasons we couldn't make out (he wasn't particularly coherent). No one seemed to give a shit. The set the night prior was 2 and a half hours. This one reached barely an hour. If my friend who promoted the show hadn't got me into the final show for free, I would have felt slightly ripped-off.
So I agree with the comment that they transition from fantastic live to pretentious and dull.
EDIT - I just realized this was still, in fact, an AtD-I thread. Whoops.

because all that material is available, they skipped some of their best songs, and it costs as much to buy their whole discography as it does to buy this cd.

I got the CD for 12 dollars, far less than the cost of their entire material. And it wasn't a best-of album, it was in retrospect. Not every compilation is a band's attempt at piling up their hits.

I think I have the same problem with TMV that I do with AVA. Both bands disregard the simplicity and style of their lead singers former bands and just try to be too much.

But the parts that are songs are brilliant.
I just don't think there are any songs on Amp. A ton of Floyd-esque slow jamming and nothing I walk away humming.

So you listen to TMV for the catchy melodies? I think the great thing about Amputechture is that every track can stand alone as a great track, where almost every other TMV album requires that you listen to the whole album to really get it.
Plus Meccatechture is just too great.
Amputechture is their best album.
i would disagree with you there. i hated it at first, but it grew on me. it's a really, really great album. but frances is the best, followed by deloused, then amputechture, then tremulant ep

If I had to rank them at the moment I'd go
Deloused = Amputechture > Frances > Bedlam > Tremulent > Poop on face > poop in mouth > Octahedron
But to get back on topic Acrobatic Tenement trumps all of these. #1 favorite album of all time by far.
