The higher the price, the better it sounds. Generally at least.
And as for people hopping on the trend, I'm all for it. The more people that buy records, the more albums get pressed.

I bought this one http://www.buy.com/retail/product.asp?sku=207910213&listingid=45601356 on ebay over the summer and it works well for me. If you search on ebay you can usually find good record players for lower than regular price. And you may already know, but there are record players that can import records right onto computers as mp3s. It might work well with old records you want as mp3s. Just a thought.

Well it's obviously not going to make or break the music industry, but any time there are more people buying records in any way, shape or form means increased support for bands dude.

He should just stick to CDs, if someone seriously calls it a "vinyl player" I don't think they should be dropping $100+ on a record player they'll probably barely ever use. Stupid argument.

When I got my record player a few years ago I mispronounced vinyl for about a week and bought my first six or seven records from either Interpunk or the Hot Topic at the mall. I hooked my record player up directly to desktop computer speakers and used the automatic arm because I was worried I would fuck up my records if i tried to place the needle myself.
Now I buy vinyl exclusively and have, at one point or another, owned over 150 different records. Not to mention I did my research and, while I can't afford it anytime soon, I have a really nice dream set-up that I can only hope to own sometime in the future. Just because my collection consists entirely of bands like Brand New, Thrice, The Mars Volta, Cursive, and other popular alternative rock bands doesn't make me any less valuable to the music or vinyl industry. And I'm well aware that I'm part of a trend, but as long as people like me start and keep buying records, all sorts of albums that never got pressed before have the potential of being pressed now.

This isn't necessarily true. A lot of labels are merely repressing things like Boston records that are already widely available while ignoring the more obscure releases on their labels. Plus, major labels getting involved makes it harder for indies to press things.

Yeah I know you're right. It's much more expensive for indie labels to license albums for vinyl if the label that own's the rights is aware of the potential value of a vinyl pressing. As long as there's a market for vinyl though, I can't help but feel more albums will be pressed.
I guess I'm just bothered by people that share Genuma's attitude.
I'm just saying there's always been a good, small vinyl community that's been working fine. Why get major labels and albums being released on vinyl just for the sake of flipping or being trendy. That kills variant collectors and the like.

Not everyone that's getting into vinyl these days is doing it to be trendy or flip. Lots of people, like myself, are just discovering the benefits of collecting vinyl over CDs or MP3s for the sound quality and complete art package. I first wanted to collect vinyl when I saw the Deja Entendu gatefold and Frances The Mute's packaging got me more excited about it than anything.

yeah, I realize some people are really doing ti for the right reasons or whatever you want to call it, but the labels aren't. Some of these brand new labels are screwing people over too. "losing" or "water damage" on almost all of a color variant then the last 10 show up on ebay? real classy. I'm just bitter about some of those fucks who start their own labels on the VC boards.

i'm all about a market if it's a real market and not a bubble. i'm just afraid that it will be and that will end up fucking the pressing plants over.

listen, i don't know what the word "flip" means but i collect vinyl because i really like the art and the sound. it's like having a CD... but bigger haha
plus when i buy CDs i don't actually listen to the CD, just my mp3s on my computer so it's nice to vary it up and listen on my vinyl player and my computer. it's also really fun to collect and search for rare stuff. i don't see what the big deal is.

a little expensive at $380 but absolutely worth it... it's one of the best turntables under $400 (with the rega p1) and it's probably a better idea to just buy a nice turntable now than buy a cheap one that'l wear down on your vinyl and eventually just break. plus, a nicer table will sound a lot better too. and it's just so pretty!

if i wasn't buying vinyl i'd be buying cd's anyway, im not doing it to jump on a trend or be cool, i mostly want to play my dad's old vinyl collection and start collecting my own cause I prefer them over a cd.
I dont care about having one that has the capability to transfer the songs to my computer. I just want something with good sound and speakers so i dont have to spend extra money for those, and around $100. Thanks those who have made suggestions though, needle doctor seems like a solid place to look.

I wouldn't think that many turntables have speakers built in
you'll most likely have to get a tuner and speakers and such along with it

hey man - i'm totally not trying to bust your balls here, but i can pretty much tell you that any turntable around $100 that has speakers built in is going to be a piece of crap. you're going to kick yourself later on if you buy a cheap turntable - like i mentioned earlier, lots of cheap turntables have heavy styli that'l bear down on all your records and wear through them in no time. rather than waste $100 now, i'd recommend at least spending a couple hundred on a decent player (local craigslist and even thrift stores are great places to look for record players, and a lot of the players from the 70's and 80's are pretty quality pieces of machinery) and getting a good set of powered speakers to go with it. if you do that, you'll be out around $400, but i guarantee you that saving the money and going that route is a much more sensible option than trying to find a cheap one now just so you can play records immediately.

I run two different labels for a number of reasons. Primarily because they were started at different times and with different people. I also like the ability to release a range of records in different genres, something I feel works better having the two labels rather than just one. And it's just fun and awesome to see both endeavors doing cool things!
