I sure wish that the RIAA would take a chill pill and read this article (http://www.boingboing.net/2006/06/28/p2p_insurer_will_pay.html?hero).

This is a fantastic idea.
edit: Although it would increase illegal downloading, which I don't think is a good thing. It also will probably cause the RIAA to stiffen the penalties or increase the number of lawsuits.
uh oh smmoreo

But is it really legit?

In a nutshell, it will just make the situation even worse... the fact that there are companies being started that will help protect you from illegal downloading will prove the RIAA's point that you shouldn't be doing it.

this is ridiculous but if the RIAA wants to play dirty then I guess they sort of deserve this.

Except there's a minor problem - at least for the people in the US. By purchasing the insurance, you're acknowledging that you know what you're doing is illegal, so the case against you goes from copyright infringement to willful copyright infringement - triple the damages and possible criminal prosecution.

Damn. Maybe if they changed the coverage to 'All negative impacts of our software and it's use'? or something along those lines?
That would make it cover viruses, law suits, etc, and not be implicative of knowledgable lawbreaking?
...they will pay all your fines and give you a t-shirt if you get convicted for file sharing.
what does the t-shirt say?
"I got sued by the RIAA, had someone else pay my fines, and they even threw in this shirt?"

even if this isn't legit, it's a good sign that file sharing will one day takeover the riaa, even though it already has. times and technology are changing - just deal already.
